Oooooh! Yippee!
Well, My dad and I are still going to make an outdoor aviary, attached to a shed.
I was thinking.....
Well, 2 things really. :P
1. Could I keep a tiel in the budgies new cage when the budgies will be in the avairy?
2. Could I keep a tiel in the aviary with the budgies? (I know this aviary will be big) :D

A) NO AND NO
Tiels require more room then budgies. To be Honest you need a cage that is AT lease 30 by 18 by 18. I know this is not the size of our current cage. Tiels can not live in the same cage as budgies. Budgies tend to bully other birds. With all that said i hope you listen

i totaly agree enna! you dont know when to stop amy! anyway, look how much further away yours is!
Look, I'm not breeding. Ok, I though I'd got that message across?
I wasn't saying I was going to get a tiel, just asking whether the cages would be suitable.
i totally agree enna! you dont know when to stop Amy!
i though i was being selfish for waiting 1 more budgie to my current flock. I give up is all i can say. I don't want to be cruel to her but what more can i do. I really don't want anyone to hate me for trying to make right but apparently i can't make right

Amy can't always have say about the vets.
Huh? :S What?
Amy can't always have say about the vets.
-------------
You can't tell your mom to take one of your birds to the vet. thats your parents choice.
Urrr.. I took Lily to the vets, yeah there was a big delay, but she's ok now.
Urrr.. I took Lily to the vets, yeah there was a big delay, but she's ok now.
THats my problem. The delay. What if she WAS in pain. You have no say when your parents take your brids to the vet like i have no say if my mother takes the cat to the vets
What does that have to do with whether I could keep a tiel in an aviary?
What does that have to do with whether I could keep a tiel in an aviary?
---------
You asked if you could house them together. i said no then it got off topic. Budgies can be aggrisive towards the tiel. Also if you put the tiel in the avairy that would be different but i'm not saying i agree with you getting a tiel
So If I just got a tiel and put it in the avairy it would be ok?
Or should I put the tiel in the cage and have the budgies in the avairy?

my budgies hurt my tiels so i dont leave them together un supervised:(
Thank you Joe. :) Who'd have thought that a little budgie would fight a big tiel!
(I think they get jealous of tiel's crests. :P)
So If I just got a tiel and put it in the avairy it would be ok?

A)For the tiel in the avairy sure but he probaly won't be as same as you would like
B)If you put the budgies in the avairy i guess put the tiel in the budgies but you may soon relise he will want a bigger cage.
I suppose I could sell it and get the tiel cage... :D
I mean the tiel cage was the same price. :P
But that's only if we build the aviary and I get teh tiel. :P

Enna does really well in pointing a point forward. i do think the cage the budgies are in would be to small for a tiel. think about it a tiel is almost twice the size of a budgie which mean almost twice the size of wing span and then if its flapping and moving it could be very small for him. it was a newly weaned baby still learning yes it would be OK for a few weeks until his wings are stronger but then you will need a larger cage especially when your at school.
I just went to Pets At Home, and yes, the tiel cage is exactly the same price as the one I just bought.

Don't you dare put a tiel in with Budgies. I wish I took a picture of what my tiels face looked like after she got into the Budgies cage when we werent home! She was all bitten and scratched up. She also didn't have a lot of her feathers!
Amy... You do not need a tiel, just be happy with your Budgies. You have too many birds and pets as it is. Tiels need big cages, the cages you have would not accomodate a tiel.

Bea's cage is very sexy!
I like Amy's too.
I've never heard a cage described as sexy. :P As the picture i posted has been taken out of the original post i want to restate that i would NEVER house tiels and budgies together and that they were only together SUPERVISED while i gave them some time in the sun. I also think that a tiel cage should be larger than 30"x18"x18", Cookie's is 30"x36"x18". :)
The tiel cage is sort of the same size as mine, but atller.

I'd like to add something to this discussion. I have my husband's two budgies (Prissy Missy and Ringo Starr) and a white faced pearl cockatiel (Shinju). The cockatiel is in his own cage on the opposite end of the livingroom from the budgies (my living room is over 15 feet long). They can hear each other but that's it.
Amy, if you decide to get a cockatiel, please be wary of one thing. Cockatiels are very prone to night frights. They cannot see at all in the dark and, if spooked, can seriously injure themselves. If you kept a tiel in an aviary outside, you would not be able to hear him if he awakens suddenly. My tiel's cage (30Hx25Lx22.5d) is close to my bedroom and I never close the bedroom door. This is in case he startles at night I can hear him and immediately go to calm him. This also means that the tiel may need emergency vet care at 2:00am! (I always recommend any pet owner have at least $200USD on hand per pet for emergencies.)
Cockatiels are known to become possessive over their owners. If this were to happen, the tiel would most probably attack your budgies to keep you to himself. You are very attached to your budgies and I know you wouldn't want that to happen.
Even though my tiel cage is considered an appropriate size for him (it is one of those "larger" cocktiel cages), it actually isn't large at all for him. This is obvious when he tries to fly around inside the cage - and he is only about 5 1/2 months old. Tiels can grow to 12 inches from head to tail with a wing span of over 15" and the cage must be large enough that when they spread their wings, they are not touching the sides of the cage. It is recommended the cage length be no less than double their wing span. (I'm currently looking to get rid of some furniture so I can get a much larger cage for him in the next few weeks because even my cage size seems very small for him).
Just a few things I thought you should think about. :)
Thank you. :D
If I did get a tiel, I'd move my budgies downstairs and keep the tiel in my room, after all, 6 budgies in my room can't be healthy for me.

thats a shame, your are choosing to give the majority of time and attention to a new bird rather than the birds you already have. If your like most kids at your age, you spend all your time in your room, not downstairs with your parents.
also, why not healthy? they dont put off the dusty dander like a too & tiel do :S
I don't spend most of my time in my room, but in my parents room with my budgies. Also, as CountryGirl68 said, they have night frights.
My dad is always saying about dust from the feathers.

tiels are WAY more dusty than budgies, they are from the same family as a too, and they are really dusty, so if your worried about health, maybe this is not the bird for you
your birds are in your parents bedroom or downstairs? because pics you have posted before, they were in that new cage you got in your room right?

It is your choice Amy and no one can stop your final decision but really do you want one? :)
They can live a lot longer than budgies and do you still have money to pay for it since you have 6 budgies, hamster, rabbit and also managing dogs from that company. If you calculate that comes quite pricey for food, vet bills, cage accessories and maintanance and TIME. :o
But if you are goodluck. ;)

Well, in the end, you will be making the decision, not us. Tiels are sweet birds (i've never had one, but my MIL did, and she was a sweety, even though she was ALWAYS laying eggs!) I just hope its the best choice for your budgies. You had your first 2 that were well tamed, and your pride and joy, then you got more & more and they got less & less attention. No matter what you say, they do not get the 1 on 1 time that they got from you when it was just them. Are you wanting to get a tiel so you can have a bird that it totally tame for you, and not a flock bird as you budgies are becoming?
I think you have learned your lesson about vet care and how important it is to go to the vet asap when something is off. So i think you will give a tiel a good home, and i am not bashing you in wanting one, i just want to know your reasons.
Well, seeing as none of my current birdies are like properly tame, I think it would be nice to have a tiel.
Zazz, the company pays for everything and we get paid for looking after dogs. :P
I don't know yet. I may consider a tiel in the near future.

01-14-2007, 01:30 PM
Oh yes I remember but still the other pets must come to some expense and specially the recent vet care price for Lilly. :o Are you getting a hand tamed tiel or a regular one. If you're getting a normal one then watch out as they beaks can be a lot harder than budgies. :o

If none of your birds are tame, don't you think you should tame them? Before you get another bird then your budgies will have less attention still..?

Well, seeing as none of my current birdies are like properly tame, I think it would be nice to have a tiel.
I appreciate your honesty as to why you want a tiel. You know now that billy and lilly that were tame are loosing that and becoming flock birds. If you get a tiel, try to get a hand tamed one, and dont get others after that, then you will always have that bond with him/her.
zarrion101
01-14-2007, 01:33 PM
I have a tiel myself as most of you know, and he is very hard to tame. I have tried, still not giving up but he does put up a fight. I would say budgies are a lot easier to tame.
I'd be getting a baby, or a rescue one if I got one.

Why are you guys fussing over that Amy shoudlnt get another pet? Its her desicion if she wanta tyiel let het get a teil its her life if shes aloud to get a tiel let ehr get it.
For the first question, i would say maybe one cockatiel may fit in that cage( if its the size that you say it is that is), but i would definitaly NOT put the tiel in with the budgies.
Also make sure you can afford all your current budgies and pets before you get a tiel. Your current pets come first.
Another thing to keep in mind, i think you could probably fit a cockatiel in your budgies cage(like i said before) if you move your budgies to the aviary you say your building, but i personally would get abigger cage thats just me. I have the same cage as Enna for my 2 cockatiels and its a perfect size.

tiels are WAY more dusty than budgies
You can say that again! I had gotten 2 air purifiers so the budgies wouldn't affect my allergies. They were working well on the low setting. With the tiel, it's as if I don't have the purifiers on at all when on low. I've had to up the setting and it hasn't stopped the allergies altogether.

it would be nice to get a rescue, but sometimes rescues have emotional scars that cant be fixed without a lot of expertise from a profesional. I would hate for you to get one, and it is just not trainable. for your situation, i would say find a breeder and get a handfed one.
Meghanxx4
01-14-2007, 01:50 PM
Also if this is your first Tiel then i would NOT get a rescue. I would go with a young tiel, there much easier to train. Maybe you can find a breeder that handtames them and that would eb even better.
Ok, thank you so much for the advice guys!
We'll see how the aviary goes, then see whether a tiel would be a nice addition to our family.
I will do a search on tiel breeders around me now.
My Dad will probably say yes, and my mum might give in... :P
I went to my local pet shop today and saw some gorgeous ones! But I'm getting one from a breeder. :P
About the dust... I'm not allergic or anything, and normally have my window open. Don't worry. :P
