This will be the breeding journal of Spongebob and Akala who i've set up in a breeding cage today. They were set up for breeding late last year but then one of the aviary birds got sick and died so i decided (because of the type of disease she had and the fact that it was contagious) that i would stop all breeding at the time to treat the rest of the flock. They did lay eggs last time.

They're set up in my bedroom (which is looking like bird central at the moment!) and i'm hoping that having gone through the act of laying before they'll be keen to try again. Someone's laid an egg in the aviary a couple of days ago and i believe it was Akala. When i caught her to bring her inside i felt between her legs and i could feel something round and hard....and egg possibly, lol. :P Can you feel eggs when they're "eggnant"?

Anyways, i'm hoping for better luck than my last few attempts at breeding budgies - they all resulted in absolutely nothing - and i'll keep you all updated here.

ohh wow cool. I hope everything goes well for you and the birds. Also, i like how you named oneof the birds spongebob :D lol
Goodluck!

Also what are there colours? im assuming spongbob is yellow but do you have any ideas of what mutations will come out?

Actually Spongebob is a skyblue opaline. :P Akala is a greywing (or cinnamon, it's hard to tell) cobalt opaline. So i should get all opalines in skyblue and cobalt. :)

Bea, what the reason you are breeding?

And if you are breeding, I think you should know the answer to this:

Can you feel eggs when they're "eggnant"?

The answer is yes, you can. Same with chickens and other birdies.

Most likely - so far i've kept all the babies i've bred. :)

Bea

Bea, what the reason you are breeding?
I'm breeding to populate my aviary mostly - you may remember i lost about 4-5 budgies over the last couple of years. :) I'm toying with the idea of selling a couple of babies but am undecided on this and when it comes time that this would be possible i'm guessing i'll be too attached and none will be sold. If i sold i would screen potential owners VERY closely to make sure all were going to a good home. Remember also that i have been breeding on a small scale for several years and I feel i have experience in this area to know what i'm doing.

As this is the first time i have EVER seen you ask this question to ANYONE breeding their birds i assume it is a cheeky remark made as a reply to the recent Pip and Spring ordeal. I have given you my reasons now and if you want to take it up with me that i am irresponsible or anything else, please do so via PM or MSN. :)

And if you are breeding, I think you should know the answer to this:
The answer is yes, you can. Same with chickens and other birdies.

I suspected that what i was feeling was an egg, i wanted comfirmation to be sure it wasn't something else that may prevent her being able to breed. On another forum i got a response which confirmed my suspicions and gave me more info. What i was feeling was an egg and at this stage it's only a day or two from being laid and is fragile - so when/if feeling it one must be careful.

Even people who have been breeding budgies for years need help sometimes and as i have never felt for an egg before (it's not something that should be done, i did in the process of netting her and bringing her in from the aviary) i wanted confirmation of what i was feeling. :)

1st of all, inexperienced hands should not be "feeling" for eggs.

I'll tell you why I breed, because my breeders came from bird farms. These bird farms force these birds to become chronic layers and so they'll never stop anyway. Therefore, we allow them GRADUALLY to stop laying, but we bring the clutch number per year down very low, eventually until it's nothing.

Bea Seems like a very nice and Responsable person that will take all the cautions nessisary with breeding. I'm sure they chicks born under her care will be well taken care of.

Bea, I also think you might want to sell some depending on how many you have, but make sure you sell to responsable people. And always give them the option to bring the bird back if they have troubles.

Good luck Bea!

Bea, I hope you have better luck this year. Any idea why you were unsucsessful last year (besides you ending the breeding?)

for anyone who questions why bea is breeding, she said very clearly, she is replenishing birds in her aviary. She also has bred before, and knows what she is doing. She has a reliable vet, and all the supplies needed to breed.

Bea, you will probably be just like me, say you might sell some, but never do! lol, i cant bear to let any of my babies go!

Can you post pics of your breeding pair? (but of course dont stress mum out taking one! lol) It will be nice to see the babies, what colors they will be.

Bea, I hope you have better luck this year. Any idea why you were unsucsessful last year (besides you ending the breeding?)

I honestly don't know!! The only times i've ever been sucessful have been with pairs that are head over heels with each other (Blinkie's parents, and the parents of the greens - Gherkin and Buzz) but my star pairs have all lost one of the birds. :( Bob and Akala seem to be very much in love (if Akala goes to the floor of the aviary so does Bob, if she flies to a different perch so does he) so i'm hoping to get some babies.

All babies will be blue opalines. Some skyblue and some cobalt - i'm still trying to figuire out exactly what colour Akala is she's either cobalt or violet and greywing or cinnamon (definitely opaline though) so i may get a couple of suprises.

Here's a photo i took about a week ago of the lovebirds, lol:
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Aviary%20Birds/January12007-lotsofpets050Custom.jpg

And Anna i think it's highly unlikely that i'll sell any of the babies, hehehe. This is not the first time i've said i will! It's a good thing i've got lots of space for them all. I figuire she could have about 10 babies ;) and they'd all fit in nicely. LMAO!

Ok the naming theme is Happy Feet (the other was The Quick and the Dead - cowboy names) because the first egg hatched 10hrs later than expected and i had lost hope that the first egg was good. Then at 3am this morning i was woken by the best noise in the world, a baby budgie cheep!! As the egg hatched late how could i not use the name Mumble (for those who haven't seen the movie Mumble is the main character and hatches late)! :D However there might be a slight shuffling of names as more hatch because this baby is a little girl....how do i know already?? I HAVE A LOVELY LITTLE ALBINO!!! Spongebob did get albino from his dads hidden gene. I'm so happy!

Shows the eyes well in this. The little darling has been fed and was having a nap when i went to get the pics. Spongebob and Akala had both been in the nesting box looking after their little one before i interupted. Like i said before this little one may have a name change depending on how many eggs hatch, if all five hatch one of the names is best suited to a girl so she'll get that.

It's tuesday here already, Tuesday 11:34am to be exact. I'm home from school for a little bit as i have a free.

Memphis hatched several hours early, which is odd seeing as Mumble hatched a few hours late and i would've expected that the same would apply for Memphis. But hey, there are two healthy, fed chickies in the nest box and that's good enough for me. :)

Here's some photos of the lovely little family. Newest baby Noah is barely visible under his 3 bigger siblings but he's been fed and seems to be just as strong as the others. When i first looked into the nest box after coming home from a driving lesson with dad i freaked cause there was dark stuff in their crops and then i realised i'd just fed the parents this massive piece of bok choy, lol! Spongebob's been a good dad eating up the soft food to feed his family. As well as eating seed for 6 now, wow! There is a little bit of fluff starting to sprout on the butts of Mumble and Memphis. And they've also got little eye slits showing so i think pretty soon they'll be looking around with cute little baby eyes.

I simply cannot believe this but the 5th egg just hatched!! I no way expected that all the eggs would actually be good. :D Am yet to 100% decide on the name for this one but will let you know soon with some photos too. I think it literally JUST hatched cause it was buried beneath it's siblings (like the egg was) and is yet to be fed. If it's not been fed in an hour or so i may bring out the two eldest bubs for 5-10 mins to give it a chance to be heard.

So after an hour and a bit baby hadn't been fed so i mixed up some runny hand rearing mix and got a tiny little spoon and gave him his first feed. I hope that's enough to kick start his life as he's so sweet. He was making his little cheepy sounds as i fed and gobbling up the food. I'll check again before bed and maybe top him up again. If he's back to empty i guess i'll be waking up during the night too. Anyway, here's a photo of all four babies. Mumble and Memphis have both opened their eyes which is cute. They're also starting to sprout fluff.

Mum and dad are still happily ignoring the poor baby. I got up every 3 hours during the night to feed it and will continue doing so. It goes back in the nest box after feeds for warmth and in the hopes that the parents will decide to feed the little guy. I'm off to feed it now...it's been almost 3 hours since i fed it at 5am, lol. I'm going to be a zombie in school today! Good thing my timetable allows me to be at home for feeding times, how conviniant is that?!

I was like a zombie for the first little bit of school but i'm nice and awake now, ready for the day. I've just ducked home from school to feed the little dude. It was only 2.5hrs since his last feed and he still had a little bit left in his crop, i'm not sure if that's what i put there or if the parents fed him a bit. I've topped him up anyway, he was eating like a PIG! He's still nameless though.

Babies this young just want to eat, they don't care who's giving it too them. He just guzzles the food off the spoon happily. I make it a little thicker than just water, it can't be too thick or he'd have trouble digesting it. During the night i was trying something to get him noticed but all that happened was that i had to feed Noah as well as Scamp, lol. So that plan failed. I'm now looking for a heat pad so i can use my fish tank as a brooder. If the parents don't feed soon then i'm just going to pull him completely, and probably Noah too for warmth and social reasons, so that i'm not disturbing the parents all the time finding Scamp under all his siblings.

Fantastic news!!! Scamp has been filled by Akala!! :D I'm so happy!! I haven't fed him since 6am this morning and it's now 11:19am and he's totally full as are all the others. :D What i find helps is scattering the babies around the nest box at feeding time so that Scamp isn't forgotten under a pile of big babies. I'll come home at lunch time (1pm ish) to make sure he's still fed and if i haven't had to feed him by tomorrow morning i think i can leave it up to his parents to care for him.

New pics, the little cuties are becoming sooo hyper and wriggly that getting clear photos is becoming impossible!! :p I accidentally gave Tim the wrong baby to hold this afternoon, they're so similar looking, so he was giving Noah cuddles for 5 mins, lol!! I figuired this out after a while and gave him Scotty (Lovelace) for a few minutes, lol, oops. I think Memphis is a skyblue but he seems to have a lilac colour on his wings so i'm not 100% yet...

Do you think Noah will mind a boys name if she really does turn out to be female? What feminine nick name could i give her? :P

A-n-M
02-21-2007, 12:41 AM
I don't think she'll mind at all. :p
It's cute for a girl to have a boyish name in budgies that is.
I already have the perfect nickname for Noah.

*Drumroll*........................................ .... Noey or Noie
Don't know if you'll like them, but I like the weird spelled names.
Makes it all the more unique. :)

I'm glad everyone is enjoying the pictures. :D I think it's exciting to see pics every few days because they always GROW. And just so you know, even if you hated the pics you'd still get them. ;) I can't stop taking them, i love photos!! *goes crazy*

Haven't checked the babies yet this morning. The parents sounded like they were feeding when i got out of bed so i just let them be for now. I gave them some fresh egg and biscuit and some fresh veggies so they'll have more stuff to feed. :D

Here's new piccies. They're super gorgeous.

First we have 22 day old Mumble, the grouchy one.
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Mumble22days.jpg

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Mumble22days2.jpg

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Mumble22days3.jpg
She lunges and "bites" whenever i open the nest box, crazy little girl! Her baby beak can't hurt though so i just laugh when she has these little hissy fits at me.

Next is 21 day old Memphis, the shy guy.
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Memphis21days.jpg

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Memphis21days2.jpg

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Memphis21days5.jpg
He's such a beautiful little baby, i'm totally in love with him. I call him Fizzy most of the time now ("phis" = fizz = Fizzy).

Here's 19 day old Lovelace, hyperactivity plus!!
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Lovelace19days.jpg

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Lovelace19days2.jpg

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Lovelace19days4.jpg
The name Lovelace won't stick, i don't really like it anymore. If it's a boy it'll stay inside as Scotty and if it's a little girl it'll live in the aviary as Ellie (LovelacE = L.E.).

This is 18 day old Noah, a total poser!
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Noah18days6.jpg

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Noah18days3.jpg

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Noah18days5.jpg
The only baby who sat on my hand and posed nicely for the camera. S/he's a total sweetie. The same colour as Memphis and looking gorgeous!

Finally here's 16 day old Scamp, the cuddly little baby.
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Scamp16days.jpg

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/Scamp16days2.jpg
Can't quite see the colour properly but looks like i could have a third cobalt opaline. :D

Not likely, unless it's male and Tim wants it. The only one i would keep indoors for myself is Memphis, he's such a sweetie.

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r78/birdybea/Breeding%20Pics/LovelaceandMemphis3.jpg
