I just got a new budgie and hes only about 2 months old, still a baby. all his stripes are still there and defined. hes tiny and adorable, im hoping to get a picture of him before he grows too much:budgie: . ive had budgies before and sadly they passed away and i missed them so i just bought a new one after over a year.

anyways, its been about 4 days and i handled him immediately, he was a very willing little guy. right now he gets up on my finger and lets me let him out. hes still very quiet and doesnt play in his cage much but once in a while when i let him out hell run around. he eats out of my hand and if i put him down in the middle of feeding him hell run for my hand to try to get back on. and today he was cold and shivering so i picked him up and wrapped my hands around him to warm him up and he wasnt scared of being enclosed in my hands. he also lets me nuzzle his chest and give him a little scratch on the head. the only thing we need to work on is getting him to respond to "up" everytime and always when my hand isnt touching his chest. bascially, we have made amazing progress, but now im afraid that that will be reversed because im visitting from college for winter break and im goin back in 4 days. im afraid hell be afraid of his surroundings and my progress will have been in vain. any advice? also, its a 45 minute drive to my apartment. any tips on safely getting him there without scaring him and putting him into a carry box like the pet stores do?

You could probably keep him in his cage but just take the water out untill you get there. Just put the cage on the seat and keep an eye on him.

I'm glad your making progress with your little guy.

My suggestions would be to make sure he is warm, Put something soft on the bottom of the cage and cover the cage up to keep any drafts off. A smaller carry thing would be better. You could put a hot water bottle on the bottom of the cage with enough fabric on top so he can be cozy but not get burnt. Make sure all perches are low to the bottom. so if he falls it isn't far. You should probably remove all but one perch. Remove most of the stuff from the cage, like toys that could swing around and hit him. You could also slide a piece of cardboard in to reduce the height of the cage. I think you will find that a 45 minute drive is not that bad, I have driven my birds half an hour to get to the vets and then there is the wait time.

He should be less stressed then when you brought him home the first time, then he had nothing and nobody. Now that he has you to trust its up to you to show him his new surroundings are safe.... Since your there less stress basicly.

Actually, I suspect a really young budgie may have less trouble adjusting than an older budgie will. My babies seem to demonstrate a certain lack of fearfulness. Of course it just might be that this is the only place they know.
