My budgie Phinny gets really excited when I give him greens, but he never actually eats them! He just shreds them or licks the water off of them. Does anybody else have this problem? I have tried a lot of different kinds of greens... chicory, mustard greens, and kale come to mind. How can I get him to actually eat them? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!:)

I know that some budgie owners object to giving budgies mirrors, but I have used them very successfully when offering my budgies new foods, like greens. If you put a mirror in front of the veggie tray/dish, it may encourage them to go over and check them out. If they see the budgie in the mirror eating the veggies, then they are more likely to eat them too!
Let us know how Phinny does with the greens!! :p

I read that in the wild budgies wet themselves in the wet grass thats how they bathe, in the dew. I also read that some budgies like to bathe in wet cabbage so thats what your budgie is doing.
Since budgies have small beaks and cannot take in that much with the points of there beaks, they acctually eat it but some falls out and looks shreaded.I think this is happening because my budgie is like this.:)

Kimmi too... I think Phinni is eating it not shredding it.
