Our household very excited with the arrival of our new family member on Saturday. Aladdin verrry nervous at first, lots of what I can only describe as 'panting'.

2nd day we were happy to see him eat and drink finally from his containers.

Today quite calm when I moved his cage into a different room and no longer jumps nervously at the noise of my girls (young and lively!) playing. Remained fairly calm when I put my hand in his cage to sort out lining his wooden bars (perches?) with the 'sand paper type stuff (?)'! He jumped into his bath for a quick dip too.

He not taking any notice of apple, green bean or parsley that I have offered him so far. I do believe he is only eating when we are in the room with him? Seems to head straight for it when we see him. Is that a nervous thing or do they like eating with company?!

When I talked to him and sang him a song he sat and watched me and did the 'eyes slowly opening and closing thing' that I have read elsewhere here is a good sign?

When we leave him in the room on his own for any length of time we put the radio on for company.

Each night I have sat with my girls next to the cage to read them all a bed time story, awww! Then it's lights out for everyone.

Little minx escaped when I tried to put his bath in!!! Back in the cage now after following a great tip from this site. I let him fly round and be free for a good hour or so, then held his cage up against him and he hopped in. Phew!

hiya and welcome to the forum :)
glad to hear hes back safe lol.

just a quick note (it was mentioned to me when i first started out and i threw mine in the bin) sanded perch covers are bad for little budgie feet. they make them red and sore and hurt them.

feel free to ask any questions :)

Oh no! I thought they were good for keeping claws trimmed?? I will get rid of them. Is the sanded flooring ok?

Poor Aladdin has been a bit subdued this past couple of days, but perhaps coz its been the weekend and we have been out leaving him on his own a lot? I do leave the radio on for him though. This evening he only perked up a lot when I played the budgie sounds on the computer. Aladdin is not taking any notice of any fruit or veg I put in the cage for him nor is he interested yet in the cuttlestone I placed in there for him. Not interested in his toys either.....

A lot chirpier this morning and yesterday. Started doing some nice singing! Aladdin must be getting used to his new home! Still not interested in the fruit and veg though.

Not everything we can eat is non-toxic for budgies. There are some fresh foods which budgies can't eat. They include: green beans, avocados, lemons, plums, grapefruit, raw potatoes, and green potatoes. (copied from budgie faq) Stop trying with green bean

Thanks for that, no more green beans going in! Mind you, I have not really put any other fruit in for a while as he really is just ignoring it. Aladdin is getting more and more relaxed though. Both myself and my husband are able to put our hands in the cage now close to him and he sits there calmly. I've even had a tentative stroke of his tummy. He bent down and gave me a very light nip, but so light I know it was not a serious bite. Now just want to try and get him to sit on my finger.

Aladdin is happy to fly about out of his cage now, and just today finally figured out how to get back into it himself which is lovely.

He seems to be doing a lot of cleaning/preening of himself - I wonder how much is normal, and when it starts becoming a problem. I just want to make sure he hasn't got mites or something? Here in Kuwait I did not find anywhere which was 'animal friendly' to buy the budgie from, so we had Aladdin from the Friday market. I worry about what the poor guy might have been subjected to there, and whether he is completely healthy.

Ah well, will stop rambling! He is eating his seed, and drinking, and jumping in his water bath when I give it to him, so hopefully he is just fine.

Help! I will repeat this in the health section in case anyone can help me there. I do think poor Aladdin has a problem. He has what can only be described as a sore butt!! It looks like there is a bald patch around his backside and he keeps doing something down there with his beak, biting/scratching whatever. I would take him straight to a vet - but don't know where a decent one is in Kuwait. Is there anything I can do to help him in the meantime while I search for a vet? Any home treatment at all?

Aladdin seems to be a bit better this evening and... I was so happy! He ate some watermelon from my hand! I tried to get him to stand on my finger but he is still not going for that, but when I offered watermelon, he loved it! My daughter was really excited! Unfortunately when she tried to feed him too he got nervous and walked away, but he did eat a little from her.

Aladdin now has a bath every morning 'with the girls'! I put his cage in the bathroom with them while they are playing in the water, you should hear him cheeping and singing! He also gets into his bath at the same time, awww! :giggle:
