In response to several instances of copyright infringement at Talk Parrots, a new rule has been added regarding posting copyrighted information. This is a Level 4 rule.

If you intend on re-posting copyrighted information (including, but not limited to, text, pictures, and videos) found on another website or any printed material, you must receive express permission from the author(s). If permission is obtained, you must state so in your post submission. If permission is denied, you are not allowed to re-post the information.

This is a good time for everyone to re-read the rules to make sure you are familiar with them. The rules can be located here (http://talkbudgies.com/rules.php). Our Privacy Statement and Terms of Use can be found here (http://talkbudgies.com/privacy.php).

I want to point out that posting copyrighted material was already forbidden by our Terms of Use (see bullet (c) under the Submissions, Postings, and E-mails section), but it was added to the rules to make it more noticeable.

If you feel your work has been stolen and re-posted, you're asked to contact an administrator directly so it's brought to our attention. We can't monitor every post that's made on the forums, so it's your duty to make sure we're aware of any copyright infringement. In addition, should copyright infringement take place, please be aware of the following statement in our Terms of Use:

Please act responsibly when using this site. You may only use this site and its contents for lawful purposes and in accordance with applicable law and you are prohibited from storing, distributing or transmitting any unlawful material through this Site. You may not collect or store personal information regarding other users. You recognise that storing, distributing or transmitting unlawful material could expose you to criminal and/or civil liability. You agree that if a third party claims that material you have contributed to the Site is unlawful, you will bear the burden of establishing that it is lawful. You understand and agree that all materials publicly posted (other than by TalkBudgies.com) or privately transmitted on or through this site are the sole responsibility of the sender, not TalkBudgies.com, and that you are responsible for all material you upload, post or otherwise transmit to or through this site.

Sorry for such a dreary announcement, but it was necessary. We'll have some more upbeat things to announce in the coming days.

Thanks for the reminder Dave:)
I have a question. I use my siggy to promote the Talk Budgie Book Club. I have posted a image of the book we are currently reading there.
Is this considered copyright infringement?

That is an interesting point. I am pretty sure there are instances such as that where it would be might be okay. Where did you get the picture?

I am also under the impression that if someone hasn't copyrighted their posted information, you don't need explicit permission, but you definitely need to give proper credit, and it would be polite to ask.

I would consider the use of that as "fair use." That's fine.

Thanks Dave.
I just googled an image of the book and pasted it in my siggy. I don't know who owns it.

Please forgive my dumbness today; but does this also include any pictures found on Google that are used in signature pictures and such?
I've used lots of images scattered around Google and haven't come across any that were copyrighted or that stated permission was needed to copy.

If there is a particular article or quote we should mention the name of the writer. Yes?

If there is a particular article or quote we should mention the name of the writer. Yes?I'm not an expert, but that sounds fine for the signatures. You'll have to look into what's useable and what's not.

If you want to post an article, you need to get permission from the author(s) first. If they say it's okay, then you need to include their name and their permission in the post.
