My little budgie hen has been struggling with a cystic ovary for about 2 years now. She has periodic swelling in her abdomen from fluid collecting around the ovary. She has never laid an egg but shows distinctive breeding behaviors. Despite efforts to control her diet to tamp down hormonal levels, she continues to have recurrences of this problem. The fluid collecting in her abdomen distends her organs and presses on her air ducts making breathing difficult. Our vet has been removing excess fluid with a syringe periodically with good results, but the fluid has continued to return. One possibility is to give her a hysterectomy, but at $1500 for the surgery, I'm not sure I can afford it.
Has anyone else had similar problems in a female budgie? She's about 7 and is sweet, affectionate and smart as a whip. She's really a member of our family and it's hard to face the idea of losing her.
