Hi. I have a male budgie. His name is Bubbles. Up until a few weeks ago his cere was normal blue & then it turned brown. Has this got something to do with a hormonal imbalance or is it something more serious?

I think maybe just an imbalance how old is he?

Bubbles is 5 years old. He also has a male friend. I have sometimes seen them mating. At the moment, his cere is a light blue with a small area of brown. Before this it was completely brown. I think he may have scraped the brown colour off. His overall health hasn't been good over the past few days & I have taken him to the vet. The vet gave him an injection of slow-release anti-biotic as well as a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement. According to the vet if things haven't improved I may have to take him to a specialist. There aren't any in Bathurst NSW. I just hope that some rest he will get better!

I've heard a couple of things that cause this change, it could be testicular cancer which could be possible considering he's 5 years old. Another reason that i've seen why males ceres turn brown happens sometimes when they live with other male budgies, the cere turns brown to show that they aren't a threat, it's basically an act of submittion. I hope the vet finds out what could be wrong! I hope the little guy gets better soon! :)

Can you please post a picture?
What do you mean by "normal" blue? Dark blue (male) or pale blue (female)?
What mutation is s/he?

I thought that as well but since the budgie is already 5 years old, isn't it a bit late to go into breeding condition? :XD: Even if she were a female, wouldn't the vet know the gender of the budgie? :S Maybe it's just caused by his hormones or the things i listed above.. But i mean, the vet should know whether it's a male or female.
