View Full Version : Longest tail feathers missing
Lily has lost both her longest tail feathers,:(
Is it:
Because she's moulting?
She's in breeding condition?
She's ill?
Or something else?
Please help because I'm really worried.:S
When she went inside the nestbox they had fallen out because they bent on the sides of the box.My females do that also sometimes when breeding. They should grow back in a few months.
Oh right, yes I think that may have happened, thank you. I agree with you.

I agree with Joey. That is nothing to be concerned about. In fact, something that is interesting is when budgies shoot out all of their tail feathers instantaneously as a survival mechanism. This happened one time to my little Kiwi when I went to take him to the shop to get his wings clipped. The lady let go of him so he flew off and when she tried to grab him, she just grabbed the longest tail feathers, so he just let them all go. They literally all just fell out! After I got over the trauma of that experience, I couldn't stop laughing at my stumpy tailed little budgiekin for weeks!!
Notice my little Kiwi without his long tail feathers!! :p

lol...I hate it when my birds tail feathers fall out. They look so not like a budgie.Thats why they are called parakeets also because of thier long tail feathers.:)
Just as long as she isn't moulting, if she's moulting then you should take the nest box out for a while as moulting and breeding is too much stress to put on a hen.
No shes not moulting if just her tail feathers fell out?I think they fell out because she bent them on the nestbox that happend to my female to When she had eggs and then babies a few years ago.:) :budgie: :)
Well i've been breeding budgies for a couple of years and i've never had a hen drop her tail feathers because she bent them. The only normal reason for tail feathers to fall out would be to moult them out.
She isn't moulting because no other feathers are/have come/coming out.
Thank you for all your help, Stumpy Sends her love!
