2009 Secret Santa [Archive] - Talk Budgies Forums

The talk has already begun! We're now officially going to start our 3rd annual Secret Santa. :)

If you've never done this before, here's an overview taken from last year's announcement to describe the event:

Participation is optional. If you do choose to participate, you will submit your information (listed below). Once everyone has had a chance to enter, you will be paired up with another member. The other person will not know who you are. You will then send this member a budgie-related gift. If they specify a particular gift, you should first try to get this. In return, someone else will send you a gift for your budgies. Again, you will not know who sends you the gift.

If this interests you, read on to learn more!

- Submissions will be accepted now through November 21 (Saturday). No submissions will be accepted after this deadline.

- You should receive your match by the end of November.

- Try to estimate shipping time so your package will arrive before the holidays.

- Only participate if you are willing (and able) to buy and ship a gift on time.

- The gift price should be no more than $15-20, not including shipping costs.

- Remember that we have members throughout the world. Be sure to keep this in mind when purchasing a gift. International shipping costs can be more expensive than domestic shipping costs. We will try our best to match you to members relatively close to you, but this is not guaranteed. If you do not want to ship internationally, please specify this. If you don't mind shipping internationally, specify this too, as I'm sure we'll need some of you to do this.

Presuming you aren't shipping a large heavy box, shipping costs are quite reasonable, even if shipped via Air Mail. If I recall correctly, you'd be looking at about $5-6 for a small light package within Canada.

My Match is gonna love me. This limit goes a long way when you do DIY toys. Got a awesome toy made right now That is pretty awesome and costed maybe $5 to make. I'm Working on my Stuff to package ASAP.

I sent out a little more than half the PMs so far. If you haven't received yours yet, you can expect it either tonight or by tomorrow (Friday) night. Since I'm working tomorrow (:(), none will get sent out tomorrow (Friday) morning/afternoon. I hope to finish them up tomorrow night though so everyone has as much time as possible to get their gifts sent out.

Also, your matches should be revealed after the holidays, or once everyone receives their gifts. Whichever is later. Unless you don't want me to reveal them. ;)

The person you send a gift to is not necessarily the person who sends you a gift. It has happened before, but it doesn't always happen. The only way that happens if there are two people who are close to each other and want to ship regionally only. And at that, it only works if there are only two people in that situation.

So as you can see, it's pretty hard for that to happen.

I try to mix it up a bit. Last year I put most people -- with a few exceptions -- with other people who were close to them. For example, several members in Ontario would ship to each other, as would the members in California, even if they opted to ship across their country. Then I realized, what if the people who opt to ship within their country want to ship to someone not close to them (but within their country)? So this year, I didn't stick all the California people together or all the Ontario people together (these are just examples). This year, those people in California might also ship to New York or Texas. See the difference? :)

Also, I'll say up front that the goal wasn't to increase everyone's shipping costs. I want it to be more of an adventure for everyone. I know personally I'd be more excited to ship to someone across the country than someone in my own state.

Mine went out last night. :) My 5 year-old carried it into the post office and popped it onto the scale. I hope the recipient likes it - I had fun picking the gifts!!

In Canada I think it doesn't matter if you ship across town or across the whole country - I think it's the same price based on weight and dimensions of the parcel.

I had never played Secret Santa before I joined these chat boards. Last year was the first time I was to send something to Europe. I felt a bit silly, had to ask a few questions of how to do it on an unrelated board. Was a bit worried about customs and forms I might need.

I got a Secret Santa gift from London from another board this year. She got me the perfect gift!!! It’s a little plaque that I can put on my backyard gate that says “Beware of the Budgie”.

I look forward to my Talk Budgies Secret Santa and hope the person I bought for likes their gift too. :)

I had so much fun shopping for my secret santa's today! I live in a very small town and our bird toy selection is very scarce, last year I had a hard time finding toys. This year I was prepared though, my store ordered in for me! Yay! I will be sending out tomorrow!

I recieved a package that I can only assume to be a SS, but because I joined on 2 boards I don't know if it is my TB Santa! Lol!
I almost opened it but my husband is making me wait until Christmas :) I can hardly wait! I really hope my recipient enjoys their's it was so much fun choosing!

I got mine in the mail a few days ago. I opened it up right away... didn't even cross my mind to wait till christmas :rolleyes: My girls love their new toys though! It's so much fun watching them play :D There was even a gift in the package for the cat too!!

For the cat? That's weird. Maybe they were giving wheat grass for the budgies? I've heard of peeps doing that. Is it wheat grass? Look at the lable. If not... score one for the cat! lol

I got my gifts already:)

I wasn't exactly sure what to send out and what kind of toys the budgies would like so i just got the same things my budgies have since they like it, i'm hoping their budgies will as well :)

I actually looked around to figure out who my person was :XD: I figured it out and was so proud of myself.

I'm sending it out this weekend. I hope they like it :) I was going to get a couple more things but i can't leave the house now since i got my toe operated on wednesday :XD:

For the cat? That's weird. Maybe they were giving wheat grass for the budgies? I've heard of peeps doing that. Is it wheat grass? Look at the lable. If not... score one for the cat! lol

It's grass to grow for the cat. It's something similar to this:
http://www.catgrass.net/ Definitely for the cat. I've mentioned on the forums a few times that my roommate has a cat, so my secret santa must've remembered those posts. It'll take some time to grow the grass for Oliver (the cat) but I'm sure he'll like his gift as much as Olive & Martini like theirs :)

I got mine today apperently. Mom called saying there was a package in the mail, only it said : from Santa so we died laughing at it as she had no idea. I'm gonna wait till christmas to open mine i guess

Rikku must have been a great bird this year, cuz Santa sent her a bunch of cool stuff. I couldn't wait to open the box. My hubby and I were on our way to run errands and he saw the box by the garage. It was addressed to Rikku c/o me it was SO cute. I didn't even start the car, I opened right there. I was floored!!! As soon as we got back I took some pics and changed 3 of her toys out right away. She is hiding from them at the moment, but I know she will love them.

I really really hope mine gets there, I made a fancy label to stick on the jiffy bag with glue (I've gone all arts and crafty since being home for a while!) , and I'm worrying that maybe the label fell off or something... :S Maybe someone can give me a sign that their budgies' parcel arrived....? :)

It's from Christian!

Oh My!!!!!Theta is one Spoiled Happy Budgie! Her Secret Santa sent her not 1 but 2 new swings ( a rope swing and an activity swing), a birdie kabob and 3 birdie bagels. Riches!!! I hung up the rope swing right away and she was on it immediately! I have trying to get a picture, but she is too nosy - as soon as she sees the camera she leaves the swing! Thank you so much for the great gifts Secret Santa - the " throw away birdie" that came from the pound is feeling very special (she won't share her new swing yet either:))

Oh I'm sure it will come soon! (That's not a hint btw; it's not me!! he he) As of today, Bob has more Christmas presents than myself or my husband. The lucky birdie has 5 little presents from Secret Santa, and one just came through the post from my sister, (who used to hate birds but Bob's converted her :) ). He also has his own card from Secret Santa, but he is waiting 'til Christmas to open his presents.

I got mine in the mail today!!! The girls just couldn't wait until Christmas, so I closed my eyes and reached in and grabbed one thing out of the lovely colourful box full of treats - some delicious looking food that will be cooked later today so the budgies will be getting fancy Christmas meals this week! Im so excited to see what else is in there, but we decided to wait until Christmas morning for the rest.

I just want to say that sending, receiving, and seeing all the posts here about secret santa fill me with so much joy - it makes me so happy to think of all these happy budgies and their owners getting all these great presents for Christmas! I'm so thrilled that my girls get a surprise from Santa : )

Danielle, I'm your secret santa! Beau used to love to climb on her own ladder when she was a baby (it was the cutest thing, how I miss those baby days!), and Lola has the same one that I gave you and she goes crazy for it. I'm glad you and Hoover like the gifts :)

I'm currently debating with my budgies on the holidays, as they feel it's too commercial now, but I am sure I will get the better of them or just tell them it is their birthdays this month.

I did give one small shred toy to the linnie, because he fell in love with it from afar and infiltrated the budgie cage to get to it. Repeatedly. He's loving it.

Thank you about the hand writing, it takes practice now days now that it’s been destroyed signing up to 200 checks a month at work.

The English budgie that was the model for the painting was from Mike Rainkin’s stud. Mike is the Chairman of the Board for the Budgerigar Association of America (the BAA). Http://www.budgerigarassociation.com (the web site is under reconstruction and will be chaning soon. Keep an eye on the new info that will be posted.) He is a champion breeder was well as a budgie judge. He has written some really nice articles for the Journal, some of those are on the web site. Mike is also know as The Violet Man, the violet mutation is his specialty.

Bob's gift arrived nice and early and he was very pleased: thank you SS! He has eaten all his treats and he loves his ladder and toy too. He had his card up next to his cage over Christmas lol. I don't know who sent it, but thank you very much!
