Im not aware of it being contagious, but its name suggests the cause - its a form of mite that exists in the environment. They need to be treated asap.

This thread may help:

The sprays that you buy in the store, and especially the tin can 'mite protectors' are not only ineffective, but toxic. It is a shame they are legal to sell.

I believe ivermectin is considered the best course of treatment currently - a drop add to the skin on the back of the budgie's head/neck. You can get it from a vet, or depending on where you are you may be able to buy it online. Be careful to follow the instructions carefully; I usually read of it being administered once a week for two or three weeks, but you will want to read up on that. First you will want to be sure that your bird actually has scaley mites, so the picture in that thread, as well as the links that are included in that thread, may be helpful. If treating an advanced case of scaley mites, or one in which the eyes have been affected or cere/beak severely gouged, you will want to seek the treatment of a vet right away.

In the thread listed above, you can read about mites, see a picture, and see links to the causes and treatments. They are not transmissible to humans. :)

It looks like mites. I just had my girl to the vet and had her diagnosed with them too. It only cost $35.00 to take her to an avian vet and have both her and another bird treated. From what I understand that spray is not for scaly face mites...it is for feather and body mites.... I do not think it will work! I would take him to the vet and hove him treated...it is easier, quick and in my case , not to expensive.
