I have heard scaly face is very slow to develope. Any idea how long? I have a young hen I got in April. She was about 2-3 months at the time and now is 7-8 months. I have a parrotlet too that I have hd a little longer. I got him in Feb ( V'day prezzie) My budgie is starting to show scaly face and the p'let has no symptoms at all. I figure she came from the pet store with it as there is no possible way she could of got it here with no contact whatsoever with any other birds, except my p'let. Is it possible she got it either at the breeders or at the pet store and it is just showing up now? She has an appt with the avian vet tomorrow.

Here are pix of her...the 1st pic is when she discovered I was stashing her millet in a bowl outside of her cage and was raiding the stash..taken yesterday. The 2nd is a pic I just snapped after you asked for a pic.

Someone told me it can take up to six months for the mites to be noticeable to us. One of my birds had mites not long ago. I put vaseline on his beak and around his nostrils to slow down the process a bit while I got some Ivermectin. Scaly face mites are microscopic and can't be seen with the naked eye so you have to treat all of the birds that have been in contact with the affected bird even if they aren't showing any symptoms.

Thanks ...that is basically what I have read online in my research too. I have a parrotlet and I asked the vet receptionist if I could bring her ( the budgie ) in for the diagnosis and then get meds to treat both...she said yes. They have been in direct contact as he feeds her. It seems to really take off after you notice there is a problem too is this normal. Does it look like scaly face from her pix? I have never seen this before and it horrifies me to think she is having her face eaten from these bugs.

It does look like scaly face. That's exactly how my poor baby looked when I noticed it and it went worse from there really quick! Until I did something about it!
I didn't go to the vet since I already knew what it was and what I needed to do so no need to go waste my money.. hehe :o
I was in shock! My birds have always been healthy. I got that bird a long long time ago and he didn't show any symptoms until many months later. Quarantine doesn't help with that! I really got upset about it.. I never wanted anything like that to happen to my babies but there's no way I could have known he had mites.

I have had two birdies with the scaly face mite. The sooner you get it treated by the veterinarian the better. One dose of Ivermectin should do it as so far it is mild. Left too long the mite can deform beaks and mean the beak will need regular trims, as it once did for my little Percival.

Sorry I didn't get back to you....I forgot I had made this thread...lol I didn't have time last night to give a proper response. I took the bird to the vet at the earliest appointment I could get. 3 days after I thought something was wrong. I debated treating her myself with olive oil or vaseline, but decided it is not worth it when I have 2 birds exposed to each other and all that would happen is they would reinfect each other all the time. One of my birds is a parrotlet and would be very hard to rub oil on ANY part of him without losing fingers...lol( well maybe only pieces of fingers) She was examined at a very good avian vet and treated with selamectin ( a derivative of ivermectin) with meds also being sent home to treat my parrotlet. The vet visit cost me $34.00. She had to have a recheck in 2 weeks and another drop of meds as well as another sent home for my parrotlet. 2nd visit cost $4.00. Total cost to treat both birds was a very small fee of $38.00 this vet is truly in it for the love of the animals!!

It's good to hear that it all worked out so well. It's great that you caught it and recognized it right away.

Great job, wish my avian vet was that cheap.
Cost me $54.00 just to bring the budgie in the door of the vets.
Average visit $100.00 :(
