View Full Version : How close are you with your budgies?
As the question says, how close are you with your budgies? Do they recognize you? Do they stretch for you? Are you so close they'll give you kisses? What's your relationship with your budgies?
I was close with my other budgies who have since passed away. My one budgie (Budgie) would come to the front of the cage whenever I walked into the room. Shane would come over out of curiosity. For example, he'd look as if he were trying to figure my face out. Vegas sometimes does this as well. But if a pin drops while he's looking at me up close he'll get so scared. Kansas usually wants no parts of us. The only way she acknowledges that we're there is when she stretches when we walk into the room. That's about it with her.
What's your relationship like?

Since we have not been together long enough yet Kiki does not really do anything when I walk in the room but once I am there she will sing me a song. When I walk to her cage she gets scared. :( We are working on that though.
Vegas did that as well at first. He'd flutter and hide whenever we'd come close to the cage. He'd get really scared when I put my hand in the cage to feed. Now he doesn't even move when I put my hand in the cage. In a few months you two will be much closer. :)

How long did it take for Vegas to become comfortable with you? I have had Kiki for about 2 1/2 months now and although she is getting much better she is still a little scared of me. When she is out of her cage she is awesome at stepping up! She will even step up some inside her cage but if I try to take her out she will flip.
We got Vegas in October. I'd say by December he was pretty used to my hand going in the cage. But the fact that Kiki will step up outside (and sometimes inside) the cage is great! That's great progress. :D

i got wendy last september and she is still a bit afraid of me but she comes out and sings and doesen't seem to be distresed just hates human contact.... :(
That's a shame luthien. I'm sure Wendy will warm up soon. :)
Well i've handled Blinkie from a little tiny pink blob so he's SUPER tame. He races back and forward chirping for a cuddle when i walk into a room and does all sorts of cute tricks to try to get my attention. He just loves picking my nose (don't know why, he just does, i'm sure it can't be healthy for him!) and he'll put up with kisses (but not too much cause big boys like him don't like snuggles!). When he was a baby he would snuggle up in my hands and go to sleep, he also used to looove head scratches but like most budgies he grew out of this (budgies aren't naturally cuddly). He's a very adventurous and playful budgie and i wouldn't have my darling any other way.:D

I have two birds; Kiko and Kina. At first, Kiko was a biting machine! But all you have to do to get them to stop biting/bond more, is to simply spend more time with them! After Kiko stopped biting, we got Kina. She never bites and is a little more finicky. It is really hard to get her out of the cage. She allways wants to be with Kikoand flutters over to her. Any Advice?
Spend time with them separately in different rooms, hopefully this will strengthen their bond with you. :)

Since Skyla had her wing amputation (only a week ago now), she has become a lot more tame. She'll step up onto my finger, whereas before, she wouldn't go near it unless she was in an unfamiliar part of the house and wanted to go back to her cage.
Kiwi lets me rub his cheeks and neck every night. He seems to love it now! Especially when he has pin feathers.
Aries needs his wings clipped! He will do anything to avoid stepping up on my finger when it's time to go back in his cage after playtime. He'll circle around and around and around the room and usually he'll decide to finally go back into his cage on his own. Before bed though, I always make sure he gets some "step-ups" onto my finger. (It works best when he's in a more quiet mood).
I don't mind that I don't have super tame budgies. They have each bonded to me in their own little ways and I love them each to pieces!

I feel like Tiki and I have bonded quite well in the short time that we have been together! Tiki always greets us with his super sweet stretch (a wing and a leg as we like to call it:) ) and these cute high pitched beeps! Sometimes Tiki will give me little kisses, slight nibbles on my finger, but sometimes shows a bit too much affection (not an actual bite, just a little more vigor in the nibble) It's so funny with Tiki because he generally does pretty good stepping up onto my finger but typically looks to climb off to a nearby perch! or he steps right over/off my finger!

debby same thing happens with thorny. He will willingly get on my finger and but i go to pull him out of the cage and he jumps to a nearby pearch or steps up and over my finger

In case you missed my pic that I posted in a previous thread, here is Skyla just a few days following her wing amputation:

Her feathers are a bit blood-stained in this picture. I'll post a more recent one soon. Her feathers are starting to grow back in so she'll hardly look like she's missing a wing at all!

thats sad does she ever try to fly

Skyla has tried to fly few times; probably because she is copying Kiwi and Aries. Generally speaking though, she simply climbs around and side-shuffles along the perches. She really is a happy girl! She is doing most of the things she did before her surgery, so that is really great.

Here are a couple of pictures of my little Skyla taken 6 days following her wing amputation surgery in case you are wondering what she looks like.
Here she is on one of her favourite toys by planet pleasures:

Yes you don't want them turning nasty on you, do you?!
Your so lucky to have a tame budgie! Billy and Lily are quite tame but they are still a bit nervous.

Saffron seems to always stretch when I'm in her vacinity....especially first thing in the morning......sometimes she seems to go on and on....lol........she seems very tame and I feel very lucky.....although she is a very very quiet bird so far.......she has only recently started chirping more frequently.....I think it's the birds outside now that the weather is getting warmer! She is a very cuddly one too.......i can nuzzle her all over and she just sits there and takes it all in.......she doesn't give me kisses yet but i can kiss her all i want and she is content to sit there and lap it up!

I'm glad to hear Saffron stretches for you! I love when my birds stretch for me when I walk in the room. Makes me feel like one of the flock. :P
Gus is a pretty tame little fella. He rides the mouse cord around and runs up to my hand that is on the mouse and nibbles my fingers hoping for a head scratch.
he likes to ride around the house on my shoulder and will stay on it in the shower. he is ok with me giving him kisses but doesn't return the favour and more looks at me like "what the heck are you doing that for?".
he will always step onto my finger and when he decides he has had enough of running around the floor and wants to be back on his gym or in his cage he will look up at me as if to say "well come on then, pick me up" if i don't he will then stand on my toe. he has me well trained.
he is the cutest little dude and i wish i had a digital camera to post up some pics.
Aww he sounds like fun!
That's just how I wan't 'my future tame baby' to turn out!

She's recovering really well though and acting as if nothing had happened. Well done Skyla!

You are absolutely right Amy! Skyla is doing just great and she is adapting well. She tries to fly on occasion but ends up doing a belly roll instead. However, she has gotten better at one-winged flight (if you can call it flight). Well, maybe it's more like one-winged balancing. She'll take off and really use the one wing to soften her landings. It's really cute! :p
AWWW! She sounds great fun! I WANT HER! Joking!

Well, I've basically only just bought Petri (like..a month ago) But he is hand tamed..though he bites, and he whistles back to me when I whistle at him and when he is out he'll go to a high *very high, ceiling level almost* perch over the door and he'll fly back onto my arm ^^ Yayness?
and the biting isn't really a big deal, he licks as he is biting -- well..nibbling..-- so it doesn't bother me much :P

I'm close with all of my budgies (4), but the most with Percy as I have had him the longest and he seemed to like me the best. Whenever I get him out of his cage him rolls his neck back and forth like he is about to regurgitate (supposed to be a sign of affection). But when my breeding pair (hopefully) lay eggs I'm going to tame one of them from when they're very little.
