Getting your bird to eat vegetables
Budgies are stubborn little creatures. If there is only one thing to eat that they have never tried before, they will starve to death. Most pet shops that a lot of people get them from usually do not give them veggies, meaning, they do not want anything to do with them. But you should be giving them veggies daily, so try following these steps.
A good veggie to start with is brocoli. It is believed that the budgies are tricked into thinking the ends are seeds.
Do not change the diet completely until they are fully adapted to eating the veggies. With one of my parents' budgies, before even trying the veggies, we had to switch the seed every 2 weeks or so. This helped our budgie get use to having different food.
We then added small amounts of vegetables to the seed. First, all he did was eat around the vegetables or throw them out of the food bowl. You cannot give up, though, at this point. Just keep putting more and more fresh veggies in the dish. (just make sure you take the veggies out if they start to spoil.)
Once they start picking at it, start putting more amounts of the veggies in the bowl, and less of the seeds. Once the budgie is used to that certant kind of veggie, then try letting them sample other veggies.
I have heard ways of trying to make the veggies look interesting to the bird. Knowing budgies, they will try sampling it with their beak.
I also tried putting some carrot pecies in the millet holder. It was a much faster way to get through to the point, but some budgies are not fooled.
Whichever works, budgies need fruits and veggies so it is good trying.
