Normally, both the mother and father take care of the babies until they are ready to leave the breeding cage. When they are very small, the father feeds the mother who, in turn, feeds the babies. As the babies grow and the seed/food can be coarser, the father will begin to directly feed the babies too. When they leave the nest box, at around four to five weeks, the father will not only feed them but will also show them how to eat on their own.
When I remove the babies from the parent's cage, I normally put them in a cage with only males. The males aren't aggressive towards the babies like some females are. Within a couple of weeks, the babies will be totally able to feed themselves and can be moved in with the adult flock.
Different breeders have different schedules. You'll work out your own.
I sell my babies at about 10 to 12 weeks of age. By then, you have a good idea of which one(s) you will want to keep for future breeding.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thank you ETAHoffman, that is helpful to me to!
Male budgies really do most of the work. They have to feed the hen during nesting and then the hen and the male feed the babies when they are born. When the budgies come out of the nest after about 4 weeks. The male then teaches them to fly and eat on thier own. I know this from my own experience of breeding budgies.....oh...and the female always has to be able to hear the male near the nestbox....lol...hopes this helps s lil more.
