What is the old saying? "Don't count your chickens before they hatch!" Well how true. Apparently, Miami is now going into the rainy season. It has been dry for months and, yesterday, it finally rained. The rain was accompanied by some rather high gusts of wind. Totally unexpected. We had 60 mph gusts from the West.
One of the gusts flipped over one of my aviaries. The one with the breeding pair of Quakers that had four eggs in it. Needless to say, the eggs were totally destroyed. The adult birds are fine but slightly disoriented since I had to remove the downed nest box.
Since we are entering not only the wet season but the beginning of the hot season, I fear it is too late to put up another box. I'll wait for cooler November or December to do that. Bottom line, however, is that I lost a clutch. Sad day.
