As many of you know, my male budgie has been sick. I took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with a bacterial infection in his gut. He's been on meds for 8 days now, and I've noticed he is still quite puffed up.

I've been watching him to make sure he eats and to see if he is getting better/worse, and I've noticed he's spending time on the bottom of the cage. I noticed it while they were eating... The female would go over to the food dish and eat, and he would go to the bottom of the cage. I think he's looking for scraps?

I just walked in there to check on him and he was on the bottom again. He always jumps back up when I come in... But I am worried. Should I separate them again? Is this a sign of illness? Or is he just trying to eat? :S

place a small dish or seed and water on the floor along with a millet spray, and sprinkle some seed around
is he young?

He is four years old. I put pellets, millet, and water on the bottom of the cage, but right now he's up on the highest perch. The first two pictures are of him, and the last is of the female to compare.

I am sorry he is ill. I hope the medicine does it job and he gets better soon.

Could it be possible that your hen is pushing him off the food dishes?
Females will bully other birds and can be very aggressive.

She's not pushing him per say.... The food dish is near a perch, but they have to climb the cage bars to get to it. (They could fly, but they choose not to). Whenever she goes back to the perch, he climbs over to the dish and eats. Not even a minute goes by and she's climbing the cage bars to get more food, and he simply goes to the bottom to eat that way I guess. He doesn't stand up for himself at all.

We're--hopefully-- going to the vet tomorrow to have them run more tests. I'm hoping he doesn't need any more meds 'cause he WILL NOT take the one's we have now! It's a huge struggle and he barely gets any in now. *sigh*
