View Full Version : How long does it take meds to work?

I took my male budgie in to see an avian vet a week ago, and she said he had a bacterial infection in his gut. She prescribed Baytril, so I've been giving him that, but he still is puffed up. I would have thought his symptoms would have faded a little by now. Is this normal?

I'm supposed to give him the meds for 2 weeks. He's not liking them at all... he makes an awful squawking noise when I go in his cage-- to get him or to change the food/water.

I put him in the travel cage, since my female wasn't letting him eat, and he keeps looking like he's going to regurgitate his food! Why?

Sorry for the constant posts! I am just very concerned about him!

i hope he gets better.
and the squaking is normal..they will loose a bit of trust after meds being ramed down their necks!
good luck with him:)

What I would want to know is if she is guessing it is a bacterial infection in the gut, based on the symptoms, and treating with baytril which is a broad spectrum antibiotic, or if there has been a test that has identified the bacteria, and it is one known to respond positively to baytril treatment. I would call the vet's office and let them know there is no improvement. Pin them down on a diagnosis.

It can take 10 days to 2 weeks, there are plenty of factors.
Of course the right diagnosis helps but in a lot of cases a vet will just try a bacterial bomb and hope for the best.
