I'll try to describe this as best I can without getting too long-winded ^^;

I brought home 2 new budgies yesterday. I got them from a very reliable source, where the animals are treated like royalty. Yes, it was a pet store, but there are no local breeders here, and I worked at this store myself. I wouldn't buy from there if I didn't know how the animals were treated. I know the owner only deals with responsible breeders. However, my new violet male, Amethyst, is showing some troubling signs now that he's home.

He "vomited" twice. Now, I am unsure if it was a vomit or a regurgitation. He didn't fling his head around, just the head bobbing and then he spat out a creamy fluid in small quantities. His feathers are clean around his face, and he hasn't done it today that I've seen.

I have also noticed that his droppings are watery and green, but the fecal parts are formed mostly. He does not have a stained or dirty vent.

He does seem quieter than the others, but he is singing loudly occasionally, flying around and eating. He sleeps a lot, but when he's awake he's looking around curiously. He fluffs up while sleeping/resting like the others do.I have him isolated from the other birds, just in case he has something contagious. I have him half covered with a towel to give him some privacy and warmth.

I have been doing my research to find out what might be causing this. I am worried that it may be the beginning of an illness, but I am wondering if the stress of being taken from his original flock, to the store, and then to me is the reason for the upset. Could it be possible that the food change caused it? He was only at the store for less than a day. They had just arrived.

If he does not improve, (though he seems slightly better than he was yesterday) he will be going to see the vet. Unfortunately, we do not have any avian vets here :(

Does anyone know of any ways I can comfort him? Is there a type of vegetable that I can give him instead of just seed? Or should he just stay on seed/millet? If I take him to the vet, would anyone know an estimated cost or the types of tests? ^^;

Please let me know if there is something I can do. Bringing him back is not an option, because I care for him now, even after only a day. I just want the little guy to be happy and healthy. Please help! :(

he sounds okay, 2 signs of stress
so keep his cage covered and nice and quiet for a while so he can have lots of sleep, then re access

I agree sounds like stress to me at the moment. Give him quiet and food, maybe try some silver beet and corn as they are high in Vit's also some heat will not go astray. I would wait a few days and see how he is going, also when he sleeps does he sleep with one leg up or both on the perch?

I've had new birds vomit and get the runs for the first few days then be perfectly fine. Some birds stress out more than others and are a bit dramatic :P

Keep doing what you are doing and moniter him. From what i've heard, in times of stress or illness it is better to simplify food rather than expand it. Clean fresh water, seed and lots of millet for sick/scared/whingy/whiney budgies :P

Thank you for all your help!!

An update if I may, Amethyst is doing very well. He is eating and singing loudly. His droppings are still a little runny but his tummy seems to have settled.

In response to Angelic Vampyre, yes, he does sleep with one leg up.
