If you were allowed to take her in the passenger compartment with you, she would probably be okay. But I certainly would not put her in the part of the plane that the animals are usually put. Also you would need to be sure that you can have the bird with you wherever you end up living.
When I was younger I had to leave my budgie behind when I went to university. Trouble is my mother is afraid of birds so my budgie did not get great care. If I knew then, what I know now, I would have tried to find a good home for my budgie. I always feel sad about that. :( As long as you are sure that someone in the family will interact with her, that should be okay too. Otherwise, I would be tempted to find a new home for her.
Congrats on the scholarship, it is too bad that it leaves you with such a difficult choice/

Most airlines wont let you take birds on the plane (i had to drive to az to take her babies i bred for her)
also coming into the us, they are pretty relaxed (maybe not so much since the bird flu) but going back into the uk, their quarantine is LONG

Aww, torn between the 2 things that are most on your mind, it is hard to choose. I think Wendy would soon get use to having the family to be accompanied by then just you. It would be nice to bring the bird, but that would mostly just be for your pleasure, since it would put a lot of stress on the bird.
At least your doing what's best for the bird and yourself :)
