View Full Version : Cage vs open area

Many budgie owners keep their budgies in cages, correct? I do something a little differently. I have a room in my house dedicated to my birds. We're talking a whole room of a house. It's about a 10x10 ft room. I have overhanging perches, wall-mounted perches, perches stretching the whole 10 foot of the room and makeshift vines. On the floor I keep newspapers for easy cleaning. The birds are in no way limited and they can fly around the room freely. I have found that my birds really enjoy this area. And it is much more enjoyable for me to watch them play and do their thing than it is to have them in cages. And I listen to RockBox sing, he's pretty good lol XD

That sounds amazing, but I do think a cage is a good idea as somewhere of a comfort for your budgies xxx

I've never had any problems with it, all my birds get along fine, even RockBox who is 4x the size of my budgies =0

I've seen a few people with a "bird room" like yours. :) It's a good idea but for most people it's neither practical or possible.

Ahh cool. Great idea, could you get a pic for me?

Are your birds tame? free flighted?

Residue

My birds are tamed and yes they fly freely. RockBox is my singing parrot lol, I taught him to sing rock lyrics :P Alas, I have no methods of taking pictures right now :(

My birds have there cages open all the time and they can leave and come in whenever they want XD. If i had a big room for my babys they would get scared XD. They love there cages very much and visit each other all the time :P.

12-02-2006, 05:54 PM
I'm assuming you have a setup in which the cages are very close together then if they just go back and forth :P Unless your birds are un-clipped. In any case, my birds just fly around and do their day to day thing, depending on their mood, they will swarm me when I enter their room lol. I bring them treats XD

12-02-2006, 05:55 PM
Awesome. If we get a bigger house I will have a huge room, one side my bedroom, one side my animal room where I will have guineapigs on the floor, and budgies, loose. And Hamster/mice mansions!

Its a great idea. I really hope you get some means of phototaking! What are your taming methods and did you ever clip the wings?

Residue
12-02-2006, 05:59 PM
I had to clip the wings for the initial training or they'd be all over the place in that massive room lol. All I'd do is handle them constantly, even if it seemed like they didn't like it. I wouldn't like trap them in my hands or anything. What I did was I'd pick up the bird and he/she would jump off my hand right? So I'd pick it back up over and over again for about 30 minutes everyday until eventually they were ok with being handled.

ya
My babys have to be clipped parents rule so i did but they get around just fine. Kiwi will hop around the house looking for people. When he finds them he chirps like crazy then we out him on a perch near us and he will sing and chirp like crazy XD

12-02-2006, 06:06 PM
I just put ladders and ropes to their unreachable perch spots.

I am letting Sunnys wings grow out as she generally stays with Doods anyway, plus she HATES her wings being clipped.

12-02-2006, 06:09 PM
ya but im talking about like aroudn the kitchen we have the rod near a window and so kiwi has to chirp but its alright for him becauise he loves the attention plus people are always aroudna nd my other two babys dont come out fo the cage too much mjuliette does but not romeo its because they are breeding and one baby and one egg XD

Ladders, that is a cool idea, hmm

Bananaz, I'm glad you mentioned the chirping, I completely forgot about how loud that room is lol. RockBox sings while the budgies chirp, it's like an echo chamber in there as well, maybe I should do something about that?

bananaz65
12-02-2006, 06:12 PM
Hmm maybe
I dont know, if it bothers you at all you should but if not no point right?

i<3mrchirpydoodlebirdy
12-02-2006, 06:16 PM
My budgies are out alot, but they just sit on top of their cage preening/eating or chewing on the grass i have there. They venture up the ropes and ladders but unless coaxed or moved they dont go much further.

Residue
12-02-2006, 06:16 PM
I guess not, I was thinking more about the birds actually, with all that echoing loudness, maybe their little ears can be damaged?

bananaz65
12-02-2006, 06:37 PM
o ya i didnt think of that hmm
Ya probley because the sound is different for them and they dont understand each other clearly

Residue
12-02-2006, 06:44 PM
You think they wouldn't be able to understand eachother, why is that?

bananaz65
12-02-2006, 06:45 PM
because of the eco it mixes with each other

So are all your budgies tame?

tootsie
12-03-2006, 01:50 PM
i can't wait till tootsie flies to me VOLUNTARILY ... ;) she's only been with me for 10 days so i'm in the process of bonding with her a lot. Her wings are clipped and she does step up, sometimes even on my shoulder. However, I'm worried wether i should clip her wings when they grow. i don't want to ... but im soooo scared she'll wanna fly away and leave me. Im thinking ..." if they have full wings .. she would wanna fly away.. not be stuck with me and sleep in her cage " yikes .. that feeling sucks. Getting on a guilt trip evertyime.

I have 2 budgies that live inside and have free flight 24/7. They have a cage in the lounge room that is permanently open and the come and go as the please.

They have never flown out the back door and it is constantly open with heavy plastic strips there as the only deterent and that is too keep flies out as I live in the country.

Feral & Clompy are tame but love their freedom and go into their cage only to sleep.

If I had my way I would have all my budgies inside but I have 2 many for that.

my breeder has a bird room for her big parrots. they each have a cage, but they are always open. I personally wouldnt have one, i live in earthquake country, and would hate for one to hit and windows break or worse yet, a fire started!

London is a beautiful city but its just so busy busy busy all the time, nobody says hello. Sorry if I am offending anyone around these parts, but I prefer the North of England myself, far more friendlier and the yorkshire people are so lovely, people say hello in the street. I love London though but would never want to live in London. apart from where I live the next big city I would like to live in is Leeds or Liverpool xxx

I know what you mean and you're not used to it and don't like all the hustle and bustle it can be a bit scary, well it is for me.

My brother and his friend only went to the airport and his friend nearly got robbed. :o I know you might get that anywhere but I do prefer the countryside.

Um, I think it's time to get back on topic now. :D

Hmm, Residue. You have no methods of taking pictures at all? Not a phone, camera, nor webcam? That is odd. Most people have at least one of those devices.

That's nice to hear. My house is too small to have a room dedicated to budgies.

I lived in London for 30 years, No robbers? honestly, you are kidding? My family and my Husband's family still live in London. Unless of course you are not talking about London England.

I think Id rather have my birds in their cages amongst the hustle and bustle of family life than a separate room where we go in to play and interract with them, but thats just my personal preference. :)
