I read somewhere that they are lactose intolerant. If that is the case what symptoms would the bird show?
Birdie used to drink some milk and loves yogurt, but since I read about lactose intolerance I stopped giving it.Did I do wrong by giving it to him??
THanks!

Your not the only one I know that has given there bird dariy. I think it can hurt them in larg amounts but I think a little won't kill them, but it is best to stop.

Yeh, a little bit is ok, but not much. Minty likes the occasional bit of cheese :)

Budgies are technically lactose intolerant from what i've head but a tiny bit wont hurt too much. My boys like a nibble of my cheese occasionally. :D

My Cherry attacks me if I eat a bagel with cream cheese. It drives her crazy. She shoves her face in it and gets it all over her beak and she flicks our her little tongue. We don't let her have very much though.

Birds Cannot Digest Milk

If you think about it, this makes sense. Mammals are nourished during infancy with their mother's milk. Birds would never be in a situation in the wild where they would drink milk. For this reason, birds do not possess the digestive enzymes necessary to process milk. Parent birds regurgitate food to their babies in the nest. Although you might have heard about birds feeding their babies crop milk, this is actually sloughed cells from the crop and secretions, and not a milk product at all.

Milk sugar is called lactose. Mammals have a digestive enzyme, lactase, to digest milk sugar. Birds simply lack lactase and cannot digest milk products containing lactose. Birds will develop diarrhea when lactose in the diet reaches between 10 and 30 percent. Products that contain a significant amount of lactose are dried skim milk and dried whey. Humans may also suffer from an inability to digest lactose, and this is called lactose intolerance.

Some milk products contain little or no lactose, and these may be safely fed to birds. And actually, these products (cheese and yogurt) are a good source of calcium for birds. Some owners have asked me if they can feed birds items containing lactose if they also give them one of those products for humans (such as Lactaid) to aid in the digestion of milk sugar. Unfortunately, that is also dangerous, as one of the by-products of lactose digestion is galactose, which is also toxic to birds. So these products must never be used in birds.

yes you can share your food with your birds, just dont give anything that is too fatty or sweet. they will really enjoy the pasta.

as for the over easy eggs, only if the yolk is cooked all the way thru

i havent spoiled any of my budgies, or other birds. i have learned my lesson with my conures. they scream everytime you eat, they want some too! the funniest thing is to see coco with a rib bone! he's one happy bird!
