We want everyone to have a good time here, but at the same time remain safe. Below are a few tips to remain safe while enjoying your time here:

Never post your last name publicly. And unless there is a legitimate reason (such as our Secret Santa event), there really isn't any need to do this privately either.
As with your last name, you should never post your address or phone number. If you plan on buying/selling something with another member, be sure you can trust that person before giving out your address or phone number.
The location field in your profile should not contain your city/town. A state or something equivalent is sufficient.
You are typically safe posting your first name online if no other information is posted.
Sensitive information such as social security numbers and credit card numbers should never be posted online. These should only be submitted through secure forms on company websites you trust. For example, a government website or your bank's website are usually safe. Third party website that are well-known, secure, and trusted like eBay, Paypal, Amazon, etc. are also safe. As with other information, this information should not be made public and should only be entered into secure forms.

You know a website is secure if its URL begins with https instead of just http.

You should never agree to meet someone in person unless you know that person. If you do meet someone from online, make sure you meet them in a public place. Never meet someone at their house or a place that is not well-populated.
If you're under 13, you shouldn't post any of your information online, whether the website is secure or not.
I hope these tips will help people know what they should and should not post online.

Excellent advice Dave. We do become comfortable and as a result we might let our guard down. In my opinion one can never be too careful.

A good reminder Amber. An 18 year old girl was murdered in Sydney last week when she went to meet a guy she had met on Facebook. He promised her a job with WIRES (a native animal rescue service here in Australia). Her funeral was either yesterday or today.

I guess it's not possible to change my username at this point?

Well.. your name is fairly common, at least. I wouldn't worry TOO much, but maybe it's a good idea to use something different for any new sites you sign up to. :) Maybe a moderator can transfer your karma to a new username or something if you're concerned, though? No idea what the mods can do on here.

My last name is very unusual, so I even take it off my e-mail sometimes. Years ago, I had someone get very creepy on me -- mentioning things they had found while "Googling" my name (and worse).. lesson learned! :( But like I said, my last name is distinctive.. so it was a lot easier for that person to cross the line.

You can PM an Admin to change it if you wish. :)

How unique your name is, depends on the location. My maiden name is extremely common in Quebec, but not in other provinces. Newfoundland has a low populations, so it might be easier to track down.

I would also say for those under age to not mention what schools they go to especially if they have posted their picture, age and first name... pretty easy to track.

Excellent advice all round from everyone
Another recent thread "whats your age" clearly shows our idea of our fellow forum users can be totally wrong
This applies to all forums not just here
