Hey guys!

So I've had my first budgie Kiko, for 3 weeks now. I think I'm pretty fortunate, he's very amiable and perches on my finger since the first day. I even got him eating some organic veggies, which took about two weeks of coaxing.

My question is will he ever obey me on command? That is to say, will he ever come to me when I ask him to? Can I train him like a dog, or will be always be a little aloof like a cat? I don't expect anything over night, but I'm just curious as to what my expectations should be.

In the last 3 days, late in the evening he's been flying to me and landing on my head. Any tips or tricks on encouraging to land on my shoulder instead? I don't really want to discourage him from coming to me in any way, but I'd rather him land somewhere other than my bald head :-)

Thank you!

Welcome Leconeq & Kiko to talkbudgies.com!:D You and Kiko seemed to have made good progress in 3 weeks. I've heard budgies can be trained to come on command, they are very smart, but I'm not sure on how to go about teaching that. It's good he is coming to you, flying on your head.:p Maybe you should get him used to your shoulder, and when he is on it feed him lots of millet.

Great, thanks guys. I just want to get an idea on what to expect. I just don't know anyone with Budgies and am not that familiar...but I'm happy to hear its doable. I work out of the house so I'm with the Bird basically 24/7...

Blinkie comes on command....most of the time. I just call "Blinkie Blinkie Blinkie" and he'll fly to me (whether that's my finger, shoulder or head). I didn't really teach him. He just wanted to fly to me and i encouraged it.

:) - I'm beginning to see that every budgie is a real character and they have very distinct personalities...i guess there is no pigeonholing budgies!!

I'll continue to work on getting him to come...I guess I'm just used to being Alpha Male here with my dog and I don't want Angelina getting the idea from Kiko that she doesn't have to listen...just kidding lol

Thanks again guys!

I think you're on the right track with your budgie. What you CAN do to train it is work with step up gradually moving your finger away making him jump to your finger rather than step. From there just get further away as he gets more confident. :D

Thank you Bea. I'll try that. It makes sense.
