Hi all,
I have a new budgie named Joe. I have had him for 2 weeks now and he still seems to be scared. he is very your but wasn't hand tame when I got him. I try to take him out twice a day, but he dosen't seem to be getting more comfortable. I can get him on my hand, but when I take him into the living room he jumps off and trys to fly back to his cage. He calls to the other birds and I have trouble settling him down. What should I do?
Joe is very sweet but I want him to be comfortable in his new home and not rely on the other birds for comfort.
PS he is in a different cage than the other 2 it is just in the same room.

It's hard to train a bird when there are others bird of his kind. I'm not saying it's impossible to train him, but it will take a little longer than training a single bird. I have mulitple birds myself and it was hard to train them and took almost two years to get them to the point they are now, you just have to be persistent and don't give up on his training. He will soon learn to trust you as time goes by.

I think that taking him out twice a day is good, but if you think that more time will create a stronger bond go right ahead. You need to let him have time for himself also. I would say you can leave him in the same, but when you are training him go to different room that is quiet and close the door so he doesn't hear the other birds. Good luck with the training and keep us posted.

hey .. considering that he wasnt hand tamed when u got him and you can actually get him onto your finger now is probably a really good progress! like A N M said .. it takes time... ive only had mine for 3 days and i know its gonna take some time...
good luck.

He is getting bolder and bolder and he isn't scared of me any more now he just decides that he is going to the other room and starts heading in that direction. he is determined.

Budgies are very determined little birds if they want something done they do themselves or at least try to.

it is so cute he will take a flying leap tward the rooma and when he hits the ground her starts running. then I go in front of him with my hand and he jumps right on it and the cycle begins again.
