Great pics vikki! I have the same cage, you would certainly have space for more budgies, we have 6 in ours :)
I love the size of those cages, i suppose my criticisms would be a) All vertical bars, makes it more difficult for budgies to climb to the top, and b) another set of the smaller side doors, lower down, would be good for attaching toys to the back of the cage (otherwise its a two person job!)
Here is my cage (a white version) just after cleaning, and ready for the budgies to fly back and try it out:

We have a spare cage like that (we bought it for 3 budgies, but decided we needed a bigger cage) in boring old white :P

LOL look at all those millets and seed sticks, spoilt little birdies!!! :D
Nice big cage, looks well made :)
One thing i would suggest, is to split the cardboard tube along the length of it, in case somebody gets stuck :o

I love the color (purple is my all-time favorite color)! They had white and black too at the store but those are too boring. ;P
I don't think Lemon minds the color even though he's a boy, lol. :P

Vickie , your set up is as great as usual ! Happy and Gigi certainly seem to be loving life :)

Erika, I love the natural theme your doing with you cage , whats the leafy plant your using in the first picture?

Jane, looks great ! just a suggestion to get rid of the dowl perches and replace them with natural wood, mineral and rope perches :D

Nice cage Kerry :D i can barely see your two (?) little ones in it - i think you need to fill it up with more budgies :D the cage is a great size, same size as mine. Didnt it come with a cage stand? Ours is on a roller stand, it's easy to get them outside for some sunshine :D

Thanks stacey, i looked at my post but the pic won't show for me :S not sure why!
But im pretty sure (from memory) it's bottlebrush on the right (long broader leaves) and mellaluca on the left (smaller, thinner leaves).
We have an aussie native back garden, our buds get a selection of new foliage every other day :D

Yep, 6 buds in there :D
They get the opportunity to come out to fly pretty well every night, so they get enough exercise.
I think 6 would be a maximum for the cage. Maybe 7 at a stretch... but they should be able to get away from the other budgies when they want alone time, which is why more would not be so good for us :)

Rope perches and different size perches are very good :) but natural is even better. The twigs coming off the perches are so good for a head scratch :D and i think the circular shape of all the perches creates patches of wear on their feet where the top of the foot rests on the top of the dowel.

Yay that's good to know, i think we might be testing ours out of the cage this weekend when im off from work, eek i'm scared

I wish i could find some breeders in my area :( we don't have trees in our garden and i don't think i can just go outside and cut some branches down :D but maybe if i see any good strongs ones on the ground i can collect them and then see if they are good and then treat them but i know nothing about nature or trees :D

On one end is a clip and the other a twist tie, but the third piece of the forked branch is shoved down into the bars, so it's kind of wedged there I guess. :)

My budgie cage is actually two Martin's BB-820 cages combined together. This is from shortly after I did said combining a few years ago, hence why it's so spartan -- I hadn't finished furnishing it yet:

http://members.cox.net/cfrowe/img/SIMG0017.JPG

The total dimensions are 48"x24"x24", which gives a pair of bugs plenty of room. It does have the disadvantage of being somewhat unwieldy, however, when it comes to cleaning. I can't easily break the panels down, so I have to recruit another person to help carry it outside (after removing the furnishings and transferring the birds to another cage, of course!) where it can hosed down and scrubbed. Happily, the bars are PVC coated, and they clean up quite easily, as do the floor pans.

does it have a divider? :) (can split into top and bottom?) i first had it split in two ,one cage with a couple on top , and the other cage with two new budgies on the bottom , they would interact with each other through the grill in the middle so after they were introduced to each other, i removed the grill in the middle and i put them all togeather, the thing is, is that its a great cage but the budgies only use the top of it lol...:d

I think I have my cage too cluttered by the looks of everyone else's cages. I am trying to over compensate I guess for him with the loss of my female. I went and got him some toys but he wont play with anything yet. I got him a mirror so he could see "another" bird, and a fake little bird.

Your cage looks good to me! As long as he has space to fly without hitting everything I think it's good. :)
I love the color of your cage too! I have the same cage except mine's purple, but I love the blue!

Hi Nerdy birdie,
Ah i see, that is a good idea for introductions! As long as there are no toe biters in the group... :nono: haha i know morrie would nip the toes of anyone above her!

Yeah, thats the problem with tall cages, we have had that before. And yet it is difficult to find the longer cages, which are still at a good size to be able to transport when neccessary (ie not an aviary...) :)

Unfortunately, that's the common problem with any cage that is tall and not wide enough.

I do not think your cage is cluttered. Your budgie still has enough space; however, I see a lot of plastic toys. I'd give him more chewable/shreddable toys to keep his beak busy.

Finger traps
Cupcake liners (white)
Condiment/nut cups
Plain white paper (strips, balls, etc)
Raffia
Cotton rope
Wicker basket
Munch balls, etc.
Just to name a few...

With the permission of my little feathered friends, Sapphire, Shamrock, and Snowflake, I will take you all on the grand tour of their home (in my home).

I will start the tour with an outside view of the cage. My little friends live in a flight cage that stands 67 inches tall from the floor to the peak of the roof. The actual cage inside dimensions is 37 inches wide, 27 inches deep and 48 inches tall from the floor to the roof’s peak. The cage is manufactured by Prevue Pet. It has 2 large doors on the front and 2 each smaller ones on the sides for easy access and cleaning.

http://talkbudgies.com/photoplog/images/14359/medium/1_Me-Sitting-Next-to-my-budgie_s-cage.jpg

Okay, so now lets step inside for a look around. This next picture is the back of the cage on the upper left side. My budgies normally spend most of their time playing in this area.

http://talkbudgies.com/photoplog/images/14359/medium/1_Left-Side-Upper-Half.jpg

From there moving over to the right, this next image is the upper-back section of the cage. Since the bars on the cage mostly run vertically, I set up a ladder that runs all the way to the top for them. They use it quite a bit. Notice that I have included an individual hut for each of my birdies. I picked them up at a local bird specialty store. So far they have not ventured inside at all. But as I type this, Sapphire is making a lier out of me as she is now partially inside the orange hut. I figured they would provide a sense of security for my budgies as well as a warm comfortable place to rest if they choose to.

You can also see Shamrock and Sapphire sitting on a perch in this image. That is Snowflakes tail pointing down from behind the green hut. She (or he) is sitting on a perch that runs the length behind the huts.

http://talkbudgies.com/photoplog/images/14359/medium/1_Right-Side-Upper-Half.jpg

From here we will drop down to the bottom of the cage. This next one is the back of the cage on the lower right side. There is much more open space in the lower half so my budgies can fly a little bit across the 3 foot width of the cage.

http://talkbudgies.com/photoplog/images/14359/medium/1_Right-Side-Lower-Half.jpg

In the next image I focus on the lower left side of the cage. Once again, the lower half is less busy with toys and stuff so my budgies can stretch their wings a little bit.

http://talkbudgies.com/photoplog/images/14359/medium/1_Left-Side-Lower-Half.jpg

Next we will temporarily step outside the cage to see the dining area from the outside which I think offers a better view due to the lighting from my picture window. I have three stainless steel dishes in this area with nothing above them. This helps to keep the poop out of their food. The first dish contains fresh water which gets changed three times a day. The second dish contains a 50/50 mixture of seed and vitamin fortified pellets. The third dish contains stuff like Millet Spray and Nutri-Berries.

http://talkbudgies.com/photoplog/images/14359/medium/1_Dining-Area-_outside_.jpg

Now we will step back inside for this next picture. This is the dining area from the inside. I only included this to show my most recent addition (starting just today). I call it is the “birdie-kabob.” I picked up a set of stainless steel skewers at Kroger and ground down the point at the end on our grinder at work. What I plan to do is slice up various vegetables and fruits to make a smorgasbord of tasty but healthy treats. Today only apple slices and carrots were on the menu. It hangs like a toy so the birdies can “eat” it while having fun playing with it at the same time.

http://talkbudgies.com/photoplog/images/14359/medium/1_Dining-Area-_inside_.jpg

And now as we approach the end of our tour, I can't forget the stars of our show. I had to promise my little feathered friends that I would let them be the stars in order to get their permission to take you inside their home. :)

Seriously, I couldn’t resist taking this photo when I saw Sapphire and Shamrock sharing a little kiss.

I hope you enjoyed the tour :budge:

Will, that is a super cage and a totally cool setup. In Michigan, your birdies may actually enjoy their little snuggle huts.
I had one in my cage for Sunny, but since it's summer I took it out for now. Planning to put it back in late fall to see if either of my guys like it. ;)

I don't think there would be any dog crates with small enough bar spacing for budgies.;)

if you could find crates with small spacing, it would be a great solution. They are also supposed to be excellent for housing rabbits. Going back up to that petco cage at the top of this page, I love seeing the setups people have in those. I have one, and it gives me an idea of what i could do to make the cage more interesting. I like that all of your perches are non-dowel, mostly because they add color to the cage and don't cramp up the space so much, leaving unusable corners. I think you have a great setup, degar247.

@miahkeet: If you give your budgies plenty of outside time, cage size might not be a huge priority, depending on how small your cage actually is and how many budgies you have. The petco cage that degar and i have is like 35 dollars (i think?) and is bigger than my coffee table. it's not the sturdiest design, but it does the job, and lots of people on here LOVE them for breeding cages. They are the perfect size for two birds plus babies. I know someone that had up to six birds in it since they really only used it to sleep in.

Although I'm no expert, Miah, your cage does look a little too small...
Is that for 3 budgies?

Either it's bigger in real life, or it's seriosuly tiny.
Try getting a larger one, if possible.
Only a suggestion ;)

No, it has 2 in it. I would never put three in there.

It was originally for my 1st Budgie alone, however he died unexpectedly and my parents decided to get 2 more instead of juts another one, and in all my dismay I didn't have time to think to get a bigger cage. I wasn't really thinking. Its hard to make good decisions after something big happened!

I have asked for a bigger cage, and only gotten 'Np, your cage is big enough for them.'

Deborah, that cage is HUGE!!!! :D wow that really is a mansion! If i were you, i would feel like i have to start filling it up with more budgies...... ;)
Jane, that setup looks like such fun!! Lucky budgies :) Looking at the rope perches, do any get pooped on, the ones lower down in the cage? How do you clean them? :o i always have mine at the top of the cage as i dont know how to keep them clean otherwise... :o

Miah, dont worry about your cage size  i think you let them out to fly during the day a lot anyway?
I'm sure that your budgies are happier in that small cage than they might be in another house. Some people have big cages, but no toys, and one lonely bird sitting in it.... i would much prefer to see a small cage with loved budgies in it :) who have time to fly around outside the cage, than one unloved budgie in a big cage.... :)
Wait i'm not reffering to anyone on this forum with a lonely budgie in a big cage though, lol, i just see it at work when i visit clients some times... :o

They are much loved. Sometimes I feel bad because I cram so many toys into their cage they look crowded in there. I love them very, very much.

You see, I do catch them stretching their wings every day in there, but they are not tame, and would rather stay in there then have a chance to fly. I did take them out today, however, and they did to quite a bit of flapping around.

All my other animals have HUGE living quarters. My Chinchillas have a very large Small Bird flight cage/Huge bird (Like it could fit 2 or 3 Macaws) cage. My fish have huge tanks, a 3 gallon for a Betta and a snail and a 10 Gallon for a 2" 13 cent feeder goldfish, a Pleco, and a Cory cat. They, on the other hand have the smallest cage.

I was looking at a Finch flight cage. Its way wider than it is taller, and its only about 40$. I will chat with my parents.

Oh! And I have a question for all of you, do you think a Budgie knows when it is loved? I think my Budgies hate me. They are so terrified of me.

:S oooh thats a hard one.... does a budgie know when it is loved... :S

I will be honest, i do not believe they do. I think they appreciate companionship and they enjoy the presence of humans.

I think budgies, by nature, only "love" their mate. And because they have that bond with (generally) only one other bird, they do not apply it to a non-romantic relationship. So budgies don't "love" their flock mates, except their partner. In the wild, i don't think budgies can afford to care about other birds, they need to concentrate on survival etc. And because they dont care about their flock mates, they dont understand the concept of being cared for. Unless maybe you only have one bird, who is very strongly bonded to a person (they think the person is their mate) - then they might realise that they and the person have mutual love for eachother. Did that make sense?

Whereas with humans, we have evolved to look after eachother, to increase the chances of survival for ourselves (as part of the group). So we love other members (non romantically) as it creates a bond, where we help eachother survive, and it is mutually beneficial. This is due to living in smaller groups, and probably also because we are "intelligent" mammals.

I guess it's just because they are birds (prey) and we are mammals (and predator).

Hmm did that make sense? Just my thoughts.... :)

you should make a topic on it, i would be interested to hear what others have to say :)

I know, its kind of blurry, but I had to take the pictures on my laptop.

Is this cage alright? I'm getting more toys for my birdies tonight, but I don't know. My dad got me the bird supplies for my b-day last year, so I know the cage is too high rather than long, but is that okay? Should I invest in a new cage? And when i put more toys in there, it looks too crowded. How many should I out it?

The dimensions are 34 x 18 x 18, but every cage I see is taller than it is wide. I'd like an answer before I go to the pet store in a hour.

Just get however many will fit in there nicely. And you can never have too many toys! It looks okay to me. How many are in there?

Psyche

Three, but they are out of the cage for about half the day. And the space requirement, according to this web site, would be enough for four, so I figure its okay.

Hi :)
as they get out of cage time each day, i imagine they are happy with that cage :)
But cages dont last forever, so keep length in mind next time you get a budgie cage :)
If you have too many toys, you can always put them on rotation - it adds interest for them, just change the toys around once a week :)

Mhm, I see. I have the same problem.

If they don't get out of cage time time your cages are a little on the small side then. Do you know the dimensions?

The minimum cage dimensions are here: http://talkbudgies.com/faq.php?faq=general_information

Yes you can wing clip at home. I do. They probably just said they can't because it is easy.

You do need to be careful though. Sometimes you can cut a blood feather and your Budgie will start to bleed. In that case you would need to try to stop it from bleeding.

Do you know where to cut? If you don't you can look it up on Google.

Here's mine.. not really a cage

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/montecarlochick/100_1326Large.jpg

She was in a cage for about 5 months then my boyfriend and I designed and built her a living area since I thought her being in a cage was just plain lame. It's made of MDF, plywood and dowels. We painted the sides and covered it in clear contact paper so it'd be easy to clean. She's very well trained and doesn't leave her area (which is in my bedroom right next to my desk) unless she's flying to me. In the picture she's sitting on her favorite spot.

i was thinking of doing the same thing with my budgies :)

It's a little small and kinda DIY (yay chair cage stand) but I plan on getting him a much larger cage when my internship is over and I go back to my hometown.

What's a flight cage? :confused2:

A flight cage is a large cage which allows a little free flight inside the cage. I don't know if there is a specific definition or not. But it is larger than a standard cage and smaller than an Avery.

This is my flight cage for my 3 (soon to be 4) budgies. It is about 3 feet wide, 5 feet high and 2 feet deep.

Not sure if aviary pictures count, but its all I have so why not?
My dad built the aviary himself about seven years ago. I also apologize for the mess, its getting a big clean this weekend. (and yes, I did pick up yesterdays apple bits that had ended up on the floor on my way out!)

The black thing underneath the seed dishes in this one is there to catch all the seed that's still good so we can recycle it and it doesn't end up all over the floor, seeing as its sand and a pain to get seed out of (although the birds do like to forage around on the floor)

Thank you! Well......... "make" is a bit of a stretch! lol It is actually a ladder I bought from an online bird store. (Not sure if I'm allowed to post the name of the store?) But it was only $3 and Marley was terrified of it being inside her cage. So I put it on top of the cage and bound the two bendy joints with that plastic rope. Once she was used to it on top......... then I put it in the cage. So now she loves it both places!

Got the flocks new cage today!!!

(Recap unless you didn't see my introduction thread. I took in 4 budgies who had been abandoned when their "owner" moved out, just leaving them. My friend moved in and found them still there. She's afraid of birds so I snagged them! Their cage was much much too small for 4 birds. They didn't fly at all; just hopped from perch to perch and scooted along the walls.)

So this first photo is the set up to get them to move from their old cage to their new one. It took FOREVER. Okay, well maybe a half an hour, but it felt like FOREVER. :laughing2:

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h30/agummibean/301320_2443061429228_1032610170_2769630_624244936_ n.jpg

This photo is once they were all moved in. They were SO hungry so they were fighting over the food at this time. :P But yeah, it's wonderfully HUGE. I found it on craigslist for only $60!! We really lucked out. I need to go get some more perches and toys now! It's just lovely to see/hear them actually FLYING from one end of the cage to the other. They are in my kitchen because that's the only place that monstrosity would fit, but it should be okay (?) because I don't have any teflon pans; all my cookware is stainless steel. Also, my recycle bins were in front of the cage to keep my dogs from getting TOO interested. :D

I'll post more photos as the setup evolves. :)

I have mine on the other side of my kitchen, too (one big room, kitchen and family room - so it's kinda in the family room). You might want to consider moving the coffee maker, though.

Mine is an early birthday (Dec baby here) present from my hubby. I've only had budgies since September this year. But I wanted them to have flight room in their cage as out of cage time will be very limited :(.

Over the past few weeks I have been adding a few things here and there to my cage in anticipation of my baby's arrival in the next month or two. Let me know what you think...should I add more, rearrange, take away? What other variety could I add?

I do have some food dishes...I'm also going to order a few more that I want.

The stand set-up is temporary, a friend of mine is going to build something for me that will be sturdy and more visually appealing! :)

Great cage and setup! I'd recommend another perch or so and maybe a swing? Some birds LOVE shredding toys, some are into bells, some just aren't into toys. In the beginning provide a good variety of different toys until you figure out what he/she likes and then you can stock the cage! For now what you have looks good... maybe add a good shredding toy as well.

I noticed from your profile that you are in Northern Ohio. Does that mean you will be getting a baby budgie from Lindsey? :D

The start of your cage set-up looks great --

Here are a few suggestions of things my two budgies particularly like:

Thanks for the feedback Deborah! Yes, I am fortunate enough to be getting one of Lindsey's babies! I like some of the things you recommended. Funny you should recommend a multi-branch perch, I just bought one today and it is in toy drawer with the extra toys and perches. Right now I have 4 different perches in the cage (one of the wooden/dow type perches that came with the cage, a rope perch, a natural wood perch, and a pedi-perch).

Because this cage is quite tall, you could add a boing. Hang it from the top and stretch it so it goes almost all the way to the bottom of the cage. That might encourage a bird to use more space, not just the upper half.
Petsmart sells long rope perches that you shape into a boing.

this cage was a Christmas gift from my parents. Lucky for me and Jasper, because I had been saving since the summer for a new cage but when you work part time, it's not that easy. It has guillotine doors but I messed around with it so it's more drawbridge style now and he can walk out on it when he chooses to. He's so much happier and plays with his toys a lot more since we switched.

the padlock at the bottom of the door was used to hold the door closed on the old cage but I used to to attach the door to the side bars this time. For the top hooks I used plier and wire cutters so they weren't looping around to let it slide up and down. I also had to mess around with the bottom wires on the left so that they looped up instead of sideways so it could open out. I left one of the top wires straightened out so that it could be pushed in between cage bars to close it. I wouldn't recommend it if your bird likes chewing on cage bars but Jasper ignores them. Sorry if this all sounds confusing, mostly what I did was mess around with the wires until I was satisfied with it.

So here's Quilly's new setup with the cage that I got delivered today. It's the Hagen Vision L01. I saved up and purchased this as I wanted to get her a much wider cage so she had more room to fly about when she's not having out of cage time. After watching her for an hour since I first put her in there, she's had a lot of fun flying the width of the cage and flying from top to bottom :).

http://i39.tinypic.com/xyi6r.jpg

For the minute I didn't want to crowd the cage out too much with toys as I want her to get used to her new surroundings. She does also have a shredding toy, but that's not in the cage in the moment as I'm going to bed soon and won't be able to supervise her. You can just make her out preening her toy with the acrylic star on it :)

Here's my cage. There are currently only four budgies in it, though I'm thinking about adding a few more. The cage was made by a local guy and is normally used outside for non-hookbills. They've chewed the inside supports a bit, but after five years it's holding up very well! I like how much room it gives them, but would like to take better advantage of the height. Maybe I could put a climbing tree of some kind in the center?

My budgies are in a heavy duty cage. They are little escape artists.

I had this cage for four budgies.. My little blue one can lift up those big doors by herself and get out. This picture is her after she went about escaping by herself.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n601/meaggiedear/photobucket-3524-1333658082311.jpg

After much frustration of needing new cages for both the budgies AND the tiels. I ended up with this.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n601/meaggiedear/photobucket-1480-1330229201263.jpg

it's great for the budgies because it's plenty of room for the two of them and it's super heavy duty and you can't lift the doors and squeeze through bars.

budgies are on the bottom

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n601/meaggiedear/photobucket-1604-1330284423402.jpg

dont' worry. these pictures were before i got all the toys in it. they are not tame, but quite spoiled.

Thank you all very much :) I try really hard to make things nice for him. I am not working right now since I have been unable to because I am awaiting my permanent residency and am not allowed to work until it is all finalized so I have a LOT of time on my hands so when I am bored I just make stuff for my birdy pal :) He is always out whenever me and my husband are home and he loves his homemade playgrounds I made for him. I am so glad you all like them. :) I am worried for whenever I get a job but when that happens my husband and I have decided to get another bird to keep him company so he doesn't get lonely.

Thank you so much Essy! :) I am glad you like it! Spyro is a pretty spoiled little girl :P Soon her new pal Sparx will be able to join in on the spoiledness that is our budgie room aka our living room :P lol. We got a new flight cage recently so it is HUGE! And the old cage is now quarantine cage for Sparx, the newbie. I cannot wait for him to go to the big cage in a month! He loves hopping from perch to perch & flying from side to side so I think he will absolutely adore the flight cage! Spyro definitely loves it :D I love you set up as well! Looks very good! I like that they can go and play in/on the other cage too. :) Also I was just looking at your other post... birdie bird and spot are ADORABLE! :D Congrats on the new addition! I can tell they must love having each other to hang out with :) I can't wait until Spyro and Sparx can finally meet!! :D

we have three cages. Medium... is the "love shack" for my couples that are raising chicks.
the large one I move the birds around and give them time to be away from the flock and I use it when the chick are hatched and are growing up and being weaned. Right now Jazzy and Oscar have it occupied..

then I have the HUGE cage. it has 5 in it now... plenty of room for more. I have it so I can put them all together and they can have room to fly and play. They really like this cage, and I am pleased that I could splurge the money for it :)

I have already posted on here my old cage set up as well as play gyms but we got a flight cage recently (which I have already posted pics of somewhere else too) but I thought I would put one here as well as my quarantine cage (which is my old cage that was pictured in this post somewhere). I know the quarantine cage seems a bit bare right now but I didn't want to overwhelm him with toys and stuff in the beginning (and I was really glad I didn't since he kind of went nuts the first day/night flapping around crazily so I am glad there wasn't too much in there for him to run into). He is settling in nicely and in a few days or so I may add some toys. We'll see. He loves jumping from perch to perch all day so I may just leave it for now. Anyways here's the pics :)

The multi-branch perch in there has sort of shifted for some reason with him jumping back and forth on it... must not have secured it quite tight enough... I will fix it I promise.. but good thing is he actually likes it that way too so it's all good :D

Spyro girl absolutely loves it! I can't wait to get Sparx in there! He is going to love it I'm sure! They really Like it. They mostly use the top half of it but they like to fly in it.. That's why there aren't many toys they like to chase each other and they are always singing. We got a great deal on it and could ask for a better cage! I am pleased with it!

I am glad to hear that they like it :) That is good that they fly in it at least. I try putting toys and food and stuff at the bottom to get mine to go to the bottom. She uses every bit of it. That is so cute that they like to chase each other and sing :) My girl likes to sing. My boy that is in quarantine hasn't started singing yet. He does chirp a bit but still getting used to us. That is great that you got a good deal on the cage. It is a wonderful one! I am glad to hear you are pleased with it :D

If I had the tall cage, I'd lay it on its side. Budgies prefer length over height any day. I'm not telling you what to do, though - it's just what I'd do if I had that cage. Nice set-up otherwise.;)

I know budgies prefer wide cages but The cage is a Hagen Vision and so can not go on its side.
It doesn't come this high, this is 1,5 cage. I had to expand before I am able to get the upgrade.
The upgrade a wider and a bit lower.

It's still more than 60cm wide.

Because they are out practically all day, they get a lot of flying time and exercise time :)

Nothing special. PH Clean Life cage w/ playtop. Not sure of exact dimensions...far to lazy to look it up haha. The bottom grate on it recently broke, so I gotta order a replacement part. Hopefully after university I will be able to upgrade to something a little bigger...and more importantly a little less cheap. I am happy with the size for the most part though. They hop and climb around a lot, and Greenie has become very agile with her flying and "hover crafting". :-p In this photo they look a bit suspicious of their oat sprays.

I bought 2 budgies yesterday at the flea market, along with a cage, but the cage was small, so I bought them a new one today. I also found a pet store that had an awesome clearance on bird toys, all the ones in the picture cost less than $20. I hope they like it. My goal is to tame them enough that they would no longer need to be in the cage all day.

The first is my budgie's modest accommodations. I like this particular cage because of the deep bottom which prevents a lot of food from being flung out of the cage.

The modest accommodations are dwarfed by the mcmansion that my conure resides in.

here's Nala's current cage set up. Excuse the mess on the bottom of the cage, she went a little crazy with the food. It got cleaned after! The blue thing on top is one of those hagen bird baths with the lid removed (she likes to stretch her wings while she baths) and the play gym just got made today, I'll be replacing the dowels with branches once I find some bird-safe trees, since there aren't many nearby.

Angel and Kiwi's cage. And my friends bird for a bit (Until she gets hers a friend on Thursday, then they're coming home together) Then I might get my own third one! And no, they don't snack on the Angry Bird crackers, that was total accident! They don't usually leave them in the kitchen, just in the evening time, but they're far from any chemicals or foods cooking. They spend time outside, and in the downstairs guest room, where they listen to the radio and sleep!

http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/429184_4582222519726_1106555706_n.jpg

I have the Clean Life cage from PetSmart, valued at $90, I got it on sale for $20, which was perfect! I plan on eventually buying another cage, but they're fine with this one for now. It's a great cage, but you have to hold it by the base, otherwise the bottom falls out, which makes quite a mess... Also had to tape the perches, they're collapsible and very very loose, so I ended up taping the perches to the end of the cage so they wouldn't fall.

Toys - Two sets of rings (One which isn't shown), a wooden swing that I rhinestoned myself, a wooden chew toy with a pink bell, a stick from the back yard, and a ladder from WalMart I got for $1 that they seem to like more than any of their other toys...

Others - Food and water bowl, snack bowl (the blue thing with a yellow holder), cuttlebone, and a pineapple mineral treat that I'll probably switch to grape soon.

Overall, they do like their cage a lot, and I like that I can stick my hand inside!

[/ATTACH]This is my parrots and cockatiels cage, though I’m buying a cage and combining my budgies and my cockatiels – the parrots are bossy! >.< I love living where I do in Australia, fresh gum leaves – honey, flowering, manna, blue gum plus bottle brush and that’s all the greens.

33813

My budgies have this small cage for another couple weeks until I can finally afford this nice one I want for them! But for now I leave it all open and they have the lounge room to themselves but mainly they wander and play along the windowsill and look outside to our lovely summer weather :D

33815

And the rest of the flock up close :3 Sunny (Sun Conure), Hercules (Green Quaker), Jessy (lighter yellow cockatiel), Maisy (dark cockatiel), Max (Blue budgie) and his mate, Lady (green). If you couldn't see the budgies in the second image above thats cause they're camera shy!

It's kind of hard to make out all the perches - there are a couple more in the far back corner. Not much flight space, I know, but Hedren and Fairbanks were pretty heinously clipped by the pet store, so right now they need things to climb on more than anything else - Hedren can jump just about anywhere she wants and climb up the walls, but Fairbanks is nowhere near so acrobatic.

http://i47.tinypic.com/2hwhgrp.jpg

Surprised how much they love both ladders. I'll have to get more for out-of-cage play once they're tame enough to venture out into the room. As you can see, the play area I'm trying to build onto the outside of the cage has barely been started.

Here is Archie's cage. I've had him for a week and a half, but I just switched around his cage yesterday. We'll see how this goes. I think I'll continue to change it slightly every week and a half or so.

He was skeptical at first, climbing around his cage to check it out in the beginning, but when he jumped inside, he was drawn immediately to the raised natural perch and the mirrored lantern toy. This is the first toy he's played with so far.

http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a623/tuc03706/DSC_0273.jpg

I will get a new cage (big enough to hold three) when I prepare for his cage mate. But first I have to finish taming Archie.

http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/a623/tuc03706/DSC_0274.jpg

Here's the inside. I love his seashell chime. We'll have to see if he ends up liking it, but either way, I like the idea that it adds a little cover. I put wild seeding grasses on clips. The tissue box on the bottom is for hiding. He loves to hide and sometimes likes to walk on the bottom of his cage. So we'll see if he likes this new addition. I put some millet peeking out of it. I still need to pick up a permanent veggie dish. Archie's wings are clipped at the moment, so right now the cage's set up is more focused on climbing than flight.

Lol yeah it's just a smudge under this site's recommended minimum size for one budgie (I think it's about 5,700 sq. in. if I remember correctly), but it's an efficient shape and it's only temporary. It will become the quarantine cage when I get a bigger one. It probably doesn't help that I have so much junk stuffed into his cage right now...I clipped his wings for taming recently so I tried to set it up "cozy" while he's perfecting his climbing skills. I let him out a lot too. But also remember the cages always seem to look a little bigger in person than they do in pictures. :)

A lot of "starter" cages I've seen are even smaller unfortunately. :/

Don't worry - I think it's a great cage if you are trying to tame him. It's more difficult in a bigger cage where they can ran away and hide, lol.

Thanks Dee! Yes it is plenty spacious for 6 budgies. They do spend at least 5 hours a day locked up and they are fine with that. If anything it is too big because I haven't gotten them to use the bottom half at all unless I put food dishes down there. The do climb around more than if they had a smaller cage though I guess. Nice setup, Callie. I see plenty of different toys in his cage and a good amount of different perches. That's very good!
I'd suggest adding a few toys for shredding since that's what birds like to do. Even simple items such as cupcake lines (paper ones, not foil of course), finger traps, plain paper, etc, would make his little house more interesting.

Thanks for the tip! He does love to chew, and I think he just discovered this recently, lol. The toy on the back left of the cage had some type of soft basket like-fibers around the balls and he managed to chew them almost all the way off within 3-4 days! Once I saw that he really enjoyed doing this I went and got him a couple more destruction types of toys. He really seems to enjoy the "Planet Pleasure" toys from Petco, and I also got him one that looks like it has tissue paper coming out of it. I really want to make my own toys as well (espcially destructible ones) but I was always worried that something might not be safe. Do you happen to know what types of fibers/papers are safe? are baskets and cardboard safe? Thanks!

Hi,

Just wondering I have been looking through all the great set ups you all have, but have noticed that no one uses the cage covers that you use to keep the mess from flying out of the cage when they eat I have a 60cm flight cage for my Wings but he is very very messy so we put a cover over the bottom of the cage to help with all the mess he was making. I have seen lots of flight cages on this post but no one uses them, are they not good to use ? Am I doing the wrong thing by using one ?

Here is a pic, pretty boring cage at the moment but I am working on it ?

Hi,
I have added a few things to Wings's home, I hope I have not over crowded it for him, let me know if you think so. He hasn't even bothered with the swing, so I could take that out. I added an extra tree branch today the big one that runs across the back of the house.

Also I noticed that no one uses the cage tidy that I have on his home ? Why is this, I find they help with the mess.

Anyway here it is.
ps. When I load the image on, it is around the right way, but when it comes on here it is wrong, why is that ?

I got this Prevue mini flight cage (it can comfortably fit 3 keets) a few days before getting Sashi. It was good value for what I want right now as a college student -- a light, mobile cage for a small flock. Though for others, I might recommend something with more slightly more width. It is very narrow for all that height, and they don't like to go to the bottom. The third bird I've adopted from my mom isn't fully moved into the cage yet. (It's complicated -- there's still a possibility he might have dormant megabacteria and am giving him preventative treatments, taking him to the vet to check this week.)

I think I've got the set up close to right. I went on a mini shopping spree for them the other day, but it was all stuff I needed. I moved the paper toy down to de-clutter and the cuttlebone up. I just need to figure out the bottom better. Any suggestions? I think I need to get some small natural perches for down there for them to hop and fly around more, but that won't be cumbersome poop magnets :p. Maybe another comfy rope perch too.

I just got a third food dish to avoid squabbles, a water dispenser, a comfy perch, a good small grapevine perch for natural grooming, a corner platform for feeding veggies and other treats, and a natural granite dish that fits on the platform and looks nice :). I also picked up some Braggs apple cider vinegar, chammomile tea, and milk thistle extract for them while I was at it!

That's strange that when you upload images here, they show up sideways. I saved this pic, turned it around, and was able to see it well.

IMO, too much of your cage is covered by the fabric. Probably 1/2 of it, right? Keeping birds in a cage is already not natural for them, and you added the seed catcher, which makes that cage even smaller :( I'd not use it.

Having mess around a cage unfortunately comes with living with a bird. Seeds, molted feathers, dust ... we are all familiar with it and need to deal with it.

That's very good that you replaced the original perches. Natural wood perches are much better. Your budgie also has a rope perch there, that's good too!

I'd add a few more toys, especially those he can shred and chew. Even strips of plain paper will do for now.

Pay attention to the cloth pins you used to secure the cage door. If he starts to play with them, remove them because the metal used in such pins is not safe for birds.

Continue working on his cage and your budgie should be happy. Also, remember to rotate the toys frequently so he often has something new to look forward to :)

I really like how you set up the cage for Solly and Puffy. They have ladders, even a flexible one too, different texture perches, and several food dishes. The way this cage is set up, it provides lots of climbing opportunities, making your budgies active, inviting them to play with different things inside and outside the cage. Several food dishes and at different levels is also very good and important, because you give a bird a choice which bowl to eat from, something that is not often seen in others' cages.
Good setup, Calea!

lol.. thank you..yes, the do have lots of food dishes. Poor Puff sometimes gets muscled out by Solly, so I wanted to make sure he gets to eat too! Funny though is that Solly will be eating and Puff will want the same dish, even though it means sometimes getting bitten! Silly guy!

Thanks! I find I am a bit obsessed with their cage. Every time I go to the pet store I am looking for more...more...more..! lol It drives my husband crazy! I told him I wanted another flight cage to link together with this one and two more babies and he said, "They're never in their cage anyway!" haha

Calea, I know that feeling - being obsessed with more toys and accessories for our birds. A few weeks ago I had to draw a line because the big plastic storage bin was full to the brim with toys and then there was another one full of cage accessories :) I had to declutter, left only those which my birds really need and use.

Thanks for the feedback. What if I just pull the cage tidy down so it isn't so far up the cage? So it just covers the food dish.

I will use something else to secure the door.

It is a 60cm long and 40cm wide cage so it should be big enough for one budgie, going on the measurements on the forum.

I will get some additional toys for him or I will try making some.

Thanks again.

This is my "new" CL cage, I'm hoping to get a few more birds for it, and have a small flock lol

This was the old (as if owning it for 4 days makes it old lol)cage, not terrible, but it's a tad cramped for one, much less two birds. I will keep it around though as a qt cage.

yes, I LOVE buying them toys, and it's hard to control how much I spend. Luckily my mum helps me with that! I was also hoping to get some bendy rope perches, boings and destructible toys because I have the exact same cage and it just looks so empty!

Wow that's a huge cage! Good for you! Is the bar spacing correct (1/2")?

Both cages have 3/8" bar spacing.....I looked for another one like the largest one and couldn't find one that big. Twiiter and Tweetz seem happy enough in their smaller one tho!
