What are some of your favorite names for budgies? How do you come up with them?

My favorite budgie name was Jibby. That was the name of one of our first two budgies. It was actually short for Jiblet. We usually just choose random names. We don't really have a set method of picking names.

Well, since I have only ever had one budgie, and her name is Kiki, I would have to say that I like that name!

When I was going to get Kiki, I was trying to come up with a name that I knew a budgie would like and if my budgie were to become a talker what would be easiest to learn. I knew that budgies like 'k' sounds so I thought of Kiki because it is so simple. I still do not know for sure what sex Kiki is but if I find out she is actually a boy I may change her name to Tiki because it is so similar but not quite so girly. :p

That's a good method. We had the gender problem with our now deceased Shane. When we first got him, we thought he was girl and we named him Shayna. Then we found out he was a guy and changed his name to Shane. :p

Well i have to say i love the name Blinkie (i mean i really have to, or else my fingers will be savaged by Blinks;)), i chose that because when Blinkie was a little baby (3 weeks old) and i was giving him cuddles he'd always go to sleep one eye at a time.:P I choose my budgies names randomly usually but for clutches of babies i usually come up with a theme (eg. Spongebob, Patrick, Sandy and Squidward.....or PB and Jelly, Bubble and Squeak), using themes makes it easier to remember all the names.

I USUALLY CALL MY BUDGIES AFTER THEIR COLOUR AND I USED TO HAVE A PAIR OF BUDGIES CALLED DUSTY AND MISTY DUSTY BEING GREY AND MISTY BEING YELLOW WITH TURQUOSE SPLOGES ON HER. UNFORTUNETLY THEY BOTH GOT KNOCKED OUT OF THEIR CAGE BY A CAT AND FLEW AWAY. THEN I RESCUED A BLUE BUDGIE AND CALLED HIM BOBBY I WAS GOING TO TEACH HIM TO TALK BUT WHEN I WAS CLEANING HIM OUT ONCE HE FLEW OUT OF THE BOTTOM OF HIS CAGE AND OUT THE BACK DOOR AND NEVER SAW HIM AGAIN EITHER. THEN I GOT LILY AND BILLY.:) WHO ARE MY CURRENT BIRDS, AND ARE GOING TO BREED SOON. LILY IS ALBINO AND BILLY IS MULTICOLOURED, LILY LOOKED LIKE A LILY AND BILLY WENT WITH LILY AND IT WAS A NICE NAME! SO THATS MY TECHNEQUE.:budgie:

That was very astute of you to notice billy and lily! Apollo was in fact named after a greek god on purpose.

My budgie Aries has a greek god name (even though it means god of war which is totally not accurate; we just liked the name!).

Amy

Ha ha, well I supose thats your theme isn't it!

Leigh

One of my young budgies is a dark green. I wanted to name him 'Kosher Gherkin'.....but it wasn't in line with the other bird's names.
They are Lucy, Desi, Viv, and Bill....after the actors on the 'I love Lucy' show. (Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley).

Smiles, Leigh

That's so funny! Nice choice for a show too. :P

Kiwi
03-19-2006, 11:50 PM
My only budgie name was Kiwi... even though she was light blue and didn't resemble a Kiwi in the least. But I named her that because my friend had a bird named Mango so I wanted mine to be a tropical fruit too (that's how I was in the 5th grade). But from that bird I got my camp name so her memory lives on whenever anyone asks me how I picked my camp name!

Budgiekin
03-20-2006, 08:42 AM
I must say that I love your choice of name (and not just because I happen to have a budgie named Kiwi myself!). That is such a neat story about how you chose that name for your budgie; I think most of us were pretty influenced by our friends at that age (and heck, I suppose many of us still are!).

Amy

Kiwi seems to be a very popular name for budgies.

I supose it suits them if there green! (Was your budgie green Kiwi?)

I have odd names... Ozzy because he is a bit slow and gormless (like ozzy osbourne)-also... he used to head band. I had a bird called kurt after kurt cobain as he would drop off his cage and hit the floor for fun-a tad crazy. Pig eats too much, paganbagel... i suggested pagan then bagel straight after and it sounded funny... munch and mango they were the last two in the shop and i had a dream that i owned them and called them munch and mango so i baught them.
Moose got his name because he is so inquisitive by nature... being places he shouldnt which a moose does... plus he is too cute!

I tend to either dream about them first them but them, or i study their personality. Its fun!

sherbert and rain came named

Welcome Budgie_Birthday! We're glad you found us! I think you will enjoy it here. There are a lot of friendly people with lots of knowledge and experiences to share! Feel free to do the same!

BUDGIE NAMES

As far as budgie names go, you may wish to check out this website:
http://www.birds-online.de/namenstatistik/statistik.php?lang=en

It contains a lot of names (listed alphabetically) for birds. It will probably take a while to go through all of them, but I am pretty sure you'll find a least a few that you may wish to consider when naming your soon-to-be budgie! How exciting!!

CLEANING CAGES

In terms of cleaning your budgie's cage, I do a daily cleaning of the bottom portion of the cage (i.e. I pull it apart from the top cage part and wash it in hot soapy water; then rinse and dry thoroughly before I put a new clean layer of paper towel as a liner on the bottom. I also wipe the perches daily and as needed (basically whenever I notice a poop on a perch, I wipe it off). I also wash all of the food dishes and water dishes daily.

For a really thorough clean of the entire cage, I usually do that once a season. (I should probably do it more though!). To do that, I take the whole cage apart (removing the perches, dishes, toys etc). and wash the whole cage from top to bottom. When I am doing a SUPER thorough job, I actually scrub the cage with a nail brush and then soak it in a dilute bleach solution; if you do that, you have to make sure you don't do this near your budgie and that you rinse and dry the cage VERY thoroughly.

BEGINNING THE TAMING PROCESS

To start taming your budgies, you could begin with perch training inside your sweetie's cage. Take a short perch and slowly bring it as close as you can towards your budgie so that if he wanted to, he could step up onto it. (Only bring it as close as he lets you; if he starts to look nervous, stop moving the perch and maybe even back off with it a bit). When your budgie is comfortable with the perch training, you can then start using your finger as a perch. The key in taming is to be VERY patient! Only train for short periods of time and perhaps two to three times a day. I usually recommend keeping the training sessions to about 10 minutes (unless your budgie clearly doesn' like it!!)

BUDGIE TOYS

Toys can actually be a very important part of your budgie's life. It can keep them busy and provide hours of entertainment for them. I have several (okay, probably over a hundred!) different toys that I rotate in and out of my budgie's cages. You can find plenty of toys for budgies in pet stores. I encourage you to take a look and see what is available! It can be quite fun shopping for new toys! Just be careful of the really cheap toys that can break easily. Toys that are too large can also scare your budgie. You'll probably want to supervise your budgie for a while whenever you introduce a new toy.

While I'm at it, I should mention that sometimes when you try to put a new toy in their cage, they either freak out, or they get really nervous. A tip to prevent that is to simply hang the toy on the outside of your budgie's cage for a couple of days before actually putting it inside. That has worked very well for me.

Once again, welcome to the forum and I really hope you stick around. We've got people with a very wide range of expertise (in everything from breeding, to feeding and from bringing home new budgies to taming them). Be sure to browse through the posts in the various forums to see if you can find out some tips and facts that will perhaps help you when you finally do get your new little sweetie!!

Would you believe it, that is the same site I was going to reccomend!
Yes it might take a while!

I would say clean out his cage at lease once a week.

And buy as many toys as you like! Wooden ones are good, but ask the shopkeeper for some safe fun budgie toys.

You could even make your own! Out of bits of sting big beads, wood and all that kind of stuff!

And as for training, there are a few threads on that, so go and look around.

ok. thanks so much everyone. i am definitly a newbie :o so over time you don't mind if i keep asking more questions do you? i am going to need all the help i can get. i asked my mom for a green budgie and she said if she can find one. so, if i get a green one, do you think Pickle is a good name? or is it just stupid?

Amy

I think Pickles is an adorable name for a green budgie!! I say go for it!!

And as for asking questions, feel free anytime! That's what this community is here for! We all learn from each other because we want our little budgiekins to be happy. Right?? Right!! :D

i am glad you guys agree with me. all of my brothers are making fun of me for even thinking about naming him Pickle. but if i don't get a green budgie, i think i will name him Aries after the greek messenger god and after my zodiac!

Budgiekin
03-23-2006, 03:22 PM
One of my budgies is named Aries! Great name! (Can you tell I might be a bit biased?) I liked the Greek/Roman gods theme so that is why I also had a budgie named Apollo.

Amy

Sorry Billy and Lily! I wasn't even trying to beat you to it.

And no, I certainly don't mind if you give your budgie Aries as a name. I think it is a great name!! :p

Budgie_Birthday
03-23-2006, 03:36 PM
Oh good. I don't want to get on anyone's bad side. Especially on my 2nd day here! Is it hard to tell the gender when you first buy them? I read somewhere that you can tell by the thing on their beaks when they are about 3-4 months old, but what about before that? Is there a way to tell then?

Dave
03-23-2006, 03:38 PM
I think that's a great name, Budgie Birthday. :D

You questions are also welcomed as well! Perhaps you could create a thread with a list of questions you have and we'll answer them there so they're not all over the place, and they'll be easier for you to keep track of. :)

Budgie_Birthday
03-23-2006, 03:45 PM
Thats a good idea. When more questions come to mind, I will create a thread. When I have more though, I am not going to create a thread with one or two questions in it. :) Also, Budiekin, that link you gave me for some names. Oh my gosh! There are so many just for the letter A! i am going to have to rethink my choices now! Those foreign names are pretty cool too. Ha! My stepdad was teasing me this morning. He wanted me to name my budgie Dinner or something like that. Is it bad that I have cats?

Amy
03-23-2006, 03:55 PM
Thats a good Idea!

Having cats is no trouble if you keep your budgie high up where your cats cannot reach. And when you let him loose, do it in a cat free room.

Also your budgie might get bored if he has got no company, so its best to place him in a frequently used room.

He also might get lonely, so don't be suprized if you end up having to get 2 budgies!

Budgie_Birthday
03-23-2006, 03:59 PM
uh oh. i am happy at the prospect of two budgies, but i don't know if my mom will be. also, my oldest brother is smart and likes to get what he wants. uess what he doesn't want? noise. any noise besides his guitar and his music is considered annoying. birds make noise. two birds make more noise. what should I do? (and also, how do i make a thread? :o )

Amy
03-23-2006, 04:10 PM
You make a thread by going to the forum you want, clicking on the 'new topic' button and you type what you want and wohla! You have a new thread!

Now about the budgies, If they get to noisy you can always cover their cage up or fill up their seed!
Filling up their seed will get them excited and go and eat and to cut a long story short: shut up, but it will not last for long, budgies like to be entertained and after they've finished eating they're full of energy, so... Let them out of their cage in a cat free run for a fly about!

Or if its a nice day go for a walk down to the local pet shop and buy a new toy for them!

Budgie_Birthday
03-23-2006, 04:21 PM
Thanks. I made a new thread. Check it out! :) Do you think foreign names would be good? I am so mixed up. This name or that, and then a new name comes up!

Dave

Thanks. I made a new thread. Check it out! :) Do you think foreign names would be good? I am so mixed up. This name or that, and then a new name comes up!
Go with whatever name you think fits the bird best. Sometimes if you're having trouble coming up with a name, create one based off the bird's appearance or personality.

Budgie_Birthday
03-23-2006, 05:42 PM
ok. thanks! :D

Kiko&Kina
03-23-2006, 09:34 PM
Well, since I have only ever had one budgie, and her name is Kiki, I would have to say that I like that name!

When I was going to get Kiki, I was trying to come up with a name that I knew a budgie would like and if my budgie were to become a talker what would be easiest to learn. I knew that budgies like 'k' sounds so I thought of Kiki because it is so simple. I still do not know for sure what sex Kiki is but if I find out she is actually a boy I may change her name to Tiki because it is so similar but not quite so girly. :p
it would be nice to change the name, but if you want your bird to say it's name, then I suggest that you leave it the way it is. I first thought that Kiko was a boy and Kina was a girl. But then I found out that it was the opposite, and i kept their names.

We're talking about an imaginary budgie, but I see what your saying!!

Wow I'm soo pleased for you! One of our members is called Blueberrybuns!

I love their names!

You got them early!

Are you going to breed them when they're older?

When will you get some pics up, I can't wait to see them!

Your so lucky!

Why don't you start a journal about them?

I hope you enjoy them!

Budgie_Birthday

umm when do they start moving?

Amy
03-26-2006, 04:14 PM
It's best to cover their cage with a cloth until they're quite used to being somewhere new.

How are the cat & dog getting along with them?

Dave

Budgie_Birthday

I am! But the cat problem . . . Isn't a problem anymore! Its a fiasco! They nearly bumped the cage right off the table! My brother Richard was there to cath it halfway. Eek!

Uh oh . . . My cat Kit-kat is bothering them! Sorry. G2g for like, 5 min!

Dave
03-26-2006, 07:48 PM
You should consider putting the cage high up. This will both stop the cat from knocking over the cage, and eliminate the risk of the cat possibly getting to the birds. It also makes the birds feel more secure.

We're getting a bit off topic here :p , but another suggestion to help make your budgies feel more secure is to place a light blanket (I use a baby blanket) over part of your budgies' cage (like across the back of it). That way your budgies won't feel so vulnerable on all sides of their cage.

Even that's Off Topic!! (So's this.)

Anyway what lovely names some people have chosen for their budgies!

I one met a lady who had a dear little old blue and yellow recessive pied budgie called Maggie. She could talk a bit and said: 'Tea on the roof, Elephant, Maggie, Hello!'

(If you were wondreing thats where I got that random bit on the thread I started on talking from!)

I had a previous budgie named "tinker" because he loved his bell toys and his partner (a cockatiel) was named "toy".......I also had "thunder" and "lightning"......my current budgie is named "saffron" because she is almost all yellow (at least i think she's a she)!! Another of my cockatiels was named 'tux' and my lovebird was "toby" I didn't purposely select names that started with "T" it just happend that way!

I once had a budgie named McGuyver ... he escaped (by pushing his beak under the cage door!!!) Another was called Blue Bayou - he was my favourite. Then there was "Binky-winky Budgie Wat" (Don't ask!!).
In January my son bought two and named then Wallace and Gromit. When we found that Wallace was a girl, we changed her name to Wallis. Unfortunately she escaped one day when we let them out of the cage - not noticing that the window was open even thought the curtains were closed. I told Mick that she went to stay with the green parakeets that visit our garden, but to be honest I don't believe she survived in the wild.
I bought him a "replacement" because I've come to realise that budgies should not be alone. We couldn't agree on new names (he likes to name them in pairs), so now it's just Budgie One and Budgie Two ... and they don't seem to mind :-)

I pick names by their color, or their personality, or mannerisms, or by how they make me feel, or who they remind me of, or just because I like the name, or something they've done, or something that happened to them, or all kinds of things. I only have two steadfast rules. If I rescue an animal that was abused or abandoned, it gets a fresh name, for a fresh start, and if I adopt someones' pet because they have to give it up, even though they love it, then I absolutely leave it's name unchanged, both, for the pets' sake, and to show respect to the former owner. Some of my pets names are: Squabbles, because he squabbles all the time, and Mama Cat, because we rescued her (pregnant), she had her litter, we couldn't think of a name so we called her, "The Mama Cat", and it turned into Mama Cat, and stuck, and Runty, because we called her, "the runty one", and Runty, stuck, and Stormy, 'cause his chest looks like storm clouds, and I love him up a storm, Plucky, 'cause he's a Pleco (fish), Clarice, 'cause she just looks like a Clarice, Enchanta,'cause she is the most enchanting little witchy cat. Sybil, 'cause she seems to have split personalities. I have tons more, but I know I better give someone else some space!:p

ok were to start heres my naming story.i have seven babies named macadamia ozzie mischeif squeak and violet crumble dancer.4 of my birds came from a friend who wanted 2 budgies that were boys but ended up being hen and cock. they wanted to sell the babies But never got around to it so then the babies had more babies and after 4 years they had a good 30 budgies(in an aviary at the bottom of the garden).they recently(1 year ago) had hand reared a baby budgie named bob( named that because they couldn’t think of anything else??).as a friend I used to go over to her house a lot and had a good upbringing in bobs life. my friend had an older sister that originally tamed bob but then got bored with him and never talked to him or got him out of his cage so her mum said that my friend could have it so he used to chit and chat so we called him squeak. Eventually my friend got bored so they gave him to me. After a while I got bored with one budgie so we went down to her aviary once when I was at her house and caught a budgie .it was a female, yf2 opaline cobalt hen and I named her violet crumble dancer. she had a yellow face do that’s the inside of a violet crumble and dancer because she climbed all over the cage so it fit. i ended up wanting to breed so I needed a bigger cage so I got a patio aviary as a deal with my dad that I could get more budgies. only 2 hours before we got the aviary we went and got some shell grit for the bottom of the cage and I saw the most amazing bird. he was pure grey and I knew I had to have him.i asked to hold him until squeak and crumble were in the aviary and settled but the could only hold him for a max of 6 hours and he was a rare colour so I brought him . I introduced them all at once so squeak didn’t have time to make territorial places and neither did the new bird. He’s a dilute opaline grey cock and I know you would probably call a yellow and green bird ozzie but at that time I really liked that name so it kinda stuck.thinking one of the boys would be left without a partner I wanted more hens.without my parents knowing I went to my friends house and caught 2 more hens.we were on the trampoline and thinking of names and when we transferd the green one from the aviary to the box to the new cage all that time we handeled her she bit and when we put her from the box to the cage she escaped(luckily we were in my friends bedroom)from our hands and we spent the next hour trying to catch her(they never tamed their birds or clipped there wings all they did was give them food and water).so we thought up mischief because well she was always so naughty. then we had 1 more name to think of for the blue white and black one we also caught. when we were sitting on the trampoline we were eating so choc coated macadamia nuts so I said “how about macadamia” so that stuck. so how many more to go???? Oh yes 2 more to go. my dad said strictly no more birds but a girl in my class is moving in a week and guess what she had two budgies to get rid of because they couldn’t go to Canberra and if not sold they were to be put down so I offered to take them in. there names were junior and Merlin but since there under a year they were ment to be boys but you never no so I changed them to Charlie and wizard and if they were girls I could keep Charlie and change wizard to witch.ok that’s all seven im sorry its more of a story then explaination.:o :o

I really don't have a explanation on how i named mine

tweety my 1st budgie, we had him/her for about 3 weeks and we ( me and my kids) all had names picked out but couldn't figure out which one "fit" so my b/f came up with the idea that we all write down 3 names ( we as in my kids and me) and put them in a hat and draw a name) So i did that, and had him draw so it was fair, well he picked "Sam" so after i switched all the titles of my photos saved to my documents and updated my space page , that night he decided the name wasn't fitting - and since we used my daughters blanket that she out grew to cover her/him up at night and the blanket had Tweety all over it, the name was switched to Tweety

with my 2nd Sky - well he's sky blue so his name became sky ( we now wish we would of waited a few more days and named him Romeo - gotta b here to understand lol)

then came Belle, Well belle means BEAUTIFUL and that she is

then came Casper and my b/f called me on his way to the grocery store after bringing Casper home and told me a name hit him like a ton of bricks and it was Casper ( as in Casper the friendly ghost) and that became her name

we still have 2 Budgies to name and 2 Tiels to name

Justice.

Well my budgie-to-be is going to be named Tex. Not really sure why I like it...If I got to have more they'd be either:
1. Zephyr
2. Shiloh
or
3. Scout, after Scout Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird. I've always really LOVED the novel as well as the movie, and Scout's my favourite. :)

I just got two budgies, and originally, I was going to name the yellow one Homer and the blue one Marge (after The Simpsons). We ended up giving them differeng names because my fiance decided to name his yellow one McBain (after another character from The Simpsons - yes, we're addicted). Seeing as your yellow is the girl and your blue is the boy, it would be kind of funny and cute to have the yellow as Marge and the blue as Homer.
As I said previously, my fiance named one of our birds after a Simpson's character he really liked. For our other bird, who is white with blue and aqua all over him/her, it took me 4 hours to find her name. After reading through a baby name book and looking online, I was fruitless. Then, when I came home from work to check on them, I just looked at him/her and knew his/her name was Tundra (after the snowy Tundra).
Go with your instinct. You'll know when you find the right names.

EmilieJ87

Also, it helped that Tundra sang for the first time (since I had her/him) when I said her name out loud for the first time. I guess she/he just really liked it!

My husband is an artist and we love classical music, so all our budgies have composer or artist names. We have Chopin, Mozart, Matisse, Monet, Riopelle and Paganini. In other words, Cho, Moz, Mat, Mo, Rio and Pag for short! Riopelle was a Canadian artist, one of our most famous! They are all male names, unfortinately, but they don't know the difference and we are not sure of any of their sexes yet, except for Chopin, who is a male. So we'll leave it at that. The nicknames could be either in any case.

I like to have a theme with my birds. My first one was name Rosco so naturally we named the three we got after that:
Daisy
Bo
Luke.
Well we lost Luke shortly after we got him so after that we got:
Phoebe
Chandler
Joey
Ross
Monica.
We're sticking to the "Friends" theme now.

I don't really have a theme; I called my first budgie Tweety, but that was when i was about 5 I think...

The next one I named Fudgie, coz I couldn't come up with a name for him and kept calling him budgie, so Fudgie rhymed with that, and sounded cute, Fudgie the Budgie :)

Voodoo is called Voodoo for a few reasons, the day after we found her we went to Big Day Out and Pendulum and Prodigy were playing (2 of our fave bands) and they both played Voodoo people, which is one of our fave songs. So we kinda named her to celebrate the awesome day we had. Also coz she kinda came back from the dead, after Bella chomped her she shoulda been dead anyways. Poor baby

I don't really have a theme either; our budgies names are Princess, Bam-Bam, Peep, Snowflake and Snowdrop.

I used to have a budgie named Bittles when I was about 8 or 9.....I named him Bittles because he was so little, and it rhymed.

Well anyways Bam-Bam and Princess had 2 babies so we named them Sweet Pea and Button. :)

Do you know how you go into a pet store and just start talking to all the animals, saying things like "Aww! What a cutie!". That's how Cutie got her name :XD: Plus I was young and couldn't think of anything else.

My sister decided to name 'her' bird Midnight Mystery, or M&M for short. She felt the need to name him something fancy after her fish, Sir Blueberry, passed away.

My favorite bird names:

Kirby
Puffin
Robin
Pebbles
Wingli
Iris
Teto
Petey
Hank
Willow
Lucca
Pom
Zephyr

Chiyo

Oddly, neither of my birds' names are among my list of favorites. Because they are my first budgies, I wanted to keep their names simple. I do like the name Happy though, because it makes me smile to think of it and it seems to suit his bubbly personality. I call Honey Honeybird when I'm talking to her, but for some reason I refer to her as Honey when talking about her to someone else. :S I dunno why. lol
