Paulie was sitting on his mum's finger today, thinking "boy what an exciting morning!". Not only had he been swinging on his bell vigorously since 7 am, but he also got to meet a new head (Alan the Kitchen-guy) to sit on, and his mum and dad did some vacuuming, which he loved. When the loud noise was on, he would sit on the shoulder of the person doing the vacuuming and sing loudly along.
Then, something really exciting happened....his mum took him outside!!! She was talking to his dad, and followed him outside while he was carrying a kitchen cupboard outside. For a moment, Paulie didn't realise anything was different.
Then he heard his mum gasp "Oh my goodness!!!!" He looked around and realised with a thrill, THERE WERE NO WALLS.
Paulie took off, flying as hard and fast as his little wings could take him, his little heart pumping furiously in his breast. He didn't hear the sound of his mum and dad forlornly calling "Paulie...Paulie...." from the ground below. He was too busy flapping his little wings.
Paulie flew and flew and flew and went very far.
Meanwhile, his dad stood outside with his favourite bell and rang it and rang it, hoping against all hope that Paulie would hear his one true love and return..... His mum walked the streets, sadly calling out "Paulie Paulie", but to no avail.
TIme passed.......Paulie was gone (free at last).
10 minutes later.....still no Paulie (sob)..............he was gone forever. (sob)
........
........
But wait!!!!
........
.........
was that a tiny little speck in the sky, flapping furiously?????
Was that a little squark far in the distance???????
Could it be.......??????????????
YES!!!!! There far in the distance was a little budgie, flying madly!!!!! Mum stood in the back yard with Paulie's cage on the table, and started ringing his bell. Would Paulie hear the call of his love? Would he return to his beloved bell? Or was the call of the wild too strong, the taste of freedom too sweet.......
.......
.......
........
Paulie circled the house and disappeared into the distance again......
........
........
.......
But then WAIT!! Was that his bell that he could hear? Those familiar beloved tones???? Yes, he started searching, flying, seeking searching for his bell?? "My bell!! My bell!!!" He thought with the rush of longing in his chest.
He circled twice, three times
Was his bell worth the sacrifice of his new found freedom????
YES!!! It was!!!! He LOVED HIS BELL!!!!

He flew down, closer and closer, and landed on the roof gutter, hesitating there for a moment, looking longingly at the blue, blue sky. Then the bell was ringing, he heard it !!! He flew down and landed on his mum's head before RUSHING into his cage to be reunited with his beloved bell.
His mum took the still open cage and with trembling hands and a pounding heart she brought his cage inside and CLOSED THE DOOR.
Paulie was hot, his little wings held out as he nuzzled his bell, making little chirping noises...
