I have been breeding parakeets for about nine years now. This occurrence isn't rare. My hens usually lay their first egg in the large cage. where I keep all of my birds. The first egg almost always cracks. As soon as the first egg is layed I put the hen and her mate in a smaller cage with limited perching space. I place any perches closer to the ground. The hen will usually lay more eggs in the following days. Hope I could help.

I'm glad to hear the father is helping out. :)

I would love to be able to watch baby budgies grow in-person! But, I must say I am grateful for members like you because it allows me to live vicariously through your experiences. :P

Unusual to see discarded egg shells like that. Normally the hens eat them for a nutritional boost as they help with calcium restoration among other things.

Looking good :) Might be a good time to start thinking about nesting material. Babies will start the poop factory and soon it will be in full motion!
