Anybody have any advice on how to potty-train a budgie? Is it even possible? :p

I would like to have Kiki trained to go over to maybe a piece of paper in the same spot when she is out so that it is easier to clean up after her when she is out of her cage. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

My cousins used to let their budgies stay out the cage all the time, and they somehow taught them to go to a certain part of the room when they (the birds) had to go to the bathroom. I have no idea how they did, but I guess it can be done.

It is possible to teach a budgie to 'go' on command but it can have it's problems. Some budgies can become so used to going on command that they won't go without the command which is obviously not healthy.

It would sound a complicated procedure and seems the cage door would have to be open all the time to enable your bird to go do his/her thing. :p

i wrote something on potty training in the forum as a response to someones question soemtime back on this forum. you may be able to find it if you do a search. it is actually sometimes quite easy to potty train, that is, assuming your budgies are already tamed.

quick run down - learn your budgies body language for 'i need to go'. if you pay close enough attention, you will be able to tell. jay shrugs a bit while isis raises her body a bit as examples. once you learn that, bring them over on your finger to a place you like them to go and let them go. watch and time how long before the next time they need to go and then repeat. this is obviouslly easier if they are tamed. if you time it, you should be able to let them play without worry and just bring them over a min before you think they will go and then let them play again. eventually, doing this enough times will teach them to go in that spot. but you want to be consistant and praise/reward them for going in the right spot. i dont care much for commands as this does at times train them to hold it in when they shouldnt in some cases, but if you must train to go on command, just add the command in when you see the body signs.

I have an easier way . . .

Put your Budgie in a big empty room with a cement floor and no furniture. Then just remove the bird periodically and HOSE the room down, ha! Oh, make sure you have a drain first, so that the mess can drain out.

How's that for advice? I bet my way is easier. Tee Hee!

Sorry, I couldn't resist. :o

Let me know how the "Potty Training" goes if you try it. Who knows - Maybe you could go into potty training other people's Budgies and make a fortune! :D

You gotta be kidding me, who would want to potty train a budgie!
They go every 15 to 20 min, they wouldn't have enough time to enjoy themselfs,
Never mind eat or sleep.

mmhmm, thats right. its too much work, besides birds dont have bladders so they cant hold it in. and like bea said, if they get too used to it they won't go without your command.i dont suggest it, but you can try sure.

ya i dont think its really neccisary for potty-training a budgie, i mean like Snowy said there poops are so small that you can just take a tissue or a peice of toilet paper and clean it up.

yea it can be annoying though if they start going in there water dish, i had a budgie who use to do that. I had to clean out his water all the time. but i still wouldnt potty-train a bird. It would take alot of time and stuff. but good luck with that if you do try and train your birds.

potty training a dog is one thing; a budgie quite another! I'm sure they poop around every 10 minutes or so, lol; besides, isn't it endearing to have bird-lime on your shoulder to remind you of your bird while you're at work/school/Uni?

haha

Well, even if it is possible, good job to those who did it. In the meantime, my whole house will be in the process of getting pooped on, and I don't really mind.
