I have heard the two terms before and wondered what line breeding was. Is line breeding inbreed? If so is there any research showing genetic defects incorporated into inbreeding?

I'd say line breeding is more for people with show birds. If you just want to breed to have budgies or to sell them, then line breeding is not necessary :)

Line breeding is a controlled form of in breeding. Breeders often line breed their birds to enhance desirable traits. If it is done by someone who hasn't studied the subject carefully it can be dangerous because faults and weaknesses can be passed down just as easily as good points

It's the same in dogs. You must be very selective and on a very limited basis line breed in dogs. It is a very common term in dog breeding by the way.

ok let's say you have a male budgie that you find to be the "perfect" budgie and you would like to get more birds like him by line breeding, then what you would do is you would get two hens and mate them with the cock. after the first year has passed, you would take a budgie from one of the hens and breed it with a budgie from the other hen. You would continue like this every year.
That's basically an example of what line breeding is, as opposed to straight inbreeding where you would breed brother-sister, father-daughter and mother-son.
am I making sense?
:D sorry it's just since I speak french more than english, sometimes I have a hard time explaining things. I'm sure if you google line breeding in budgies you will find better explanations than mine though :)
