Hi, my girlfriends mum has 2 budgies and 1 canary in 3 seperate cages next to window. I personally think it gets really cold in the front room and there next to the bloody window!!!!...She's had the 1 budgie and canary for many years sitting on the window seal and has recently got a budgie from her mum which she could no longer look after. Do you think it's wrong for her to leave the birds next to the window?...i just looked at them and there all puffed out...not sure if this is normal or not
Kind Regards, Richard

It can be very difficult to regulate the temperature near a window so I wouldn't keep any birds near one. There are often drafts that can create a chill, and when the sun is out, it can create desert-like heat. Not good! But I know you already knew that!

Hi, the good thing is that theres a heater right underneath the cages, so i just turned it on a little. I did feel a little draft coming in.
Hi BugieKin, thanks for your reply

My only concern with the heater is that the air would be very dry which can dry out their nares which can leave birds prone to getting infections, particularly respiratory infections.

Hi, i'll turn the heater off then. I'll give off some hints about the window problem and see what happens. I dont think theres anywhere suitable to put them, but she will have to find a way. Do you think they would be ok on the window seal?

Put a themometer near the cages, on or in if it is a safe kind. Check to see what the temperature is throughout the day. Use a kleenex or even feathers that have molted off the birds and see just how much of a draft there is. Which side of the house is the window? North, south east west. How much shade does the window get and do the prevailing winds blow at the window.
Don't forget that wild budgies live in the outdoors and they are exposed to rain, wind, heat and cool/cold nights. Our budgies can deal with some variation in their environments. But if something is required, it could be as simple as covering the backside of the cage and misting around the cage a little bit. The faster the water evaporates the drier the location is.
If the birds have been in that location for a long time and are doing well it can't be that much of a problem. Just my two cents worth.

I have my budgies hanging near a window. I just have window covered in the winter time and in the summer I keep the blinds tilted down and that keeps out a blaring sun but gives them good light. I think they like it. I also keep a heater near them in the winter because our house can get cold.
My only concern with the heater is that the air would be very dry which can dry out their nares which can leave birds prone to getting infections, particularly respiratory infections.
I nver worried about the dry ness of the heat. Do you think it might be a good idea to get a humidifier.
