I voted they have been, because Blinkie's used to be clipped but not now. Ozzie's are clipped but i will allow them to grow back.

Oh what, just to make it easier for the training/taming? I'm going to do that with 'my future baby!'

Bea

Yeah, with your future baby don't clip until after it's learnt to fly. If you do it before then the baby wont have a chance to develop strong breast muscles and will have trouble learning to fly later in life (i made this mistake with Blinkie).

:D
Bea was it because you carried Blinky everywhere that he didn't develop strong breast muscle and you loved him and spoilt him like we all do with our beautiful family members.
I just had 2 beautiful budgies that refused to fly and they did not have their wings clipped.
They lived inside in their own beautiful cage with a ladder at the door to the floor and they would climb down the ladder and walk around the floor all day then at night up the ladder back into their cage and they 12 mths old.
All their brothers and sisters flew because they were in the outside avairy, these I trained and they now live with a little seven year old girl and her five siblings and yes they still walk everywhere.
Yes I do spoil my budgies

Yes! I will teach him/her to fly before wing clipping because I will handle him/her from a blob so I will not need to do so much training! (If you understand!)

I'll maybe keep them clipped for saftey after what happened to Dusty, Misty and Bobby.

And you probably know this but clip both wings and not just one. Another mistake i made with Blinkie (can you tell, a year ago i was clueless about budgies!).

hi. you guys don't know me yet, but my name is Crystal. I just joined and I thought I'd partisipate in this poll... mine are clipped :) and I personally think its better cause then they can't hurt themselves on mirrors and windows etc... They can still zoom across the room just not at speeds that are dangerous. My finches are not clipped though, seems wrong to take flying away from them... its all they have really. I mean, budgies are so smart that they can still play and lead a VERY full life in many other ways. But finches are dumb and terrified of everything haha. I love them but its true. If they were clipped they'd have absolutley nothing left in life and probably have a heart attack when they couldn't fly away from me lol!

Thanks for the info! I've had 3 budgies fly away in the past.

i clip for safety too. But with my parrot i HAD to clip him besause he was pure EVIL and he would 'dive bomb' people he didnt like :S Aha no more kamacazie parrots now!

Amy

Oh! Another EVIL bird! To me all birds just look like little fluffy friends! I'm wrong!!

hahaha! He wasn't evil :) poor thing. practically all parrots will be agressive if they are left unclipped... if they can get above your head they start to think they are the boss and dive bombing is the most common complaint I hear from unclipped parrot owners :D.

Do you still have him? what kind was he? I LOVE parrots! But untill I have my own house, I will not get one. Having a huge, loud bird makes it hard to rent apartments lol. I am hoping to open a bird store evetually though, and then I'll be able to have many parrots in my store whether or not I've moved into my own house :D!

I'm rambling lol... maybe this should have been in the chit chat forum haha. ah well.

He is a Senegal and according to the local bird trainers here, they are THE hardest and meanest thing you can buy :( Which i didnt know. When he bites he holds on aswell and will not let go which will hurt but thankfully he hasnt bitten me yet. He HATES smokers. He lashes out at smokers and people with false nails oddly enough. He is getting getter though. I can stroke his beak and chuckle his head through the bars so im doing ok i guess. . .

oh he's the little guy in the picture with the budgie isn't he?! He's so pretty! So you can't take him out of the cage? is that what you meant? If so, thats so sad :( I'm sorry your having such a hard time with him. what techniques have you tryed so far? maybe I can help with some ideas :D

i never clipped wendy's wings... but i didin't tought you have to clipp them... my nan used to clipp her african gray's ones but that was because he was to powerfull and could hurt the kids... i didin't kno that you have to clipp the budgie ones to...hmm

Amy
04-11-2006, 09:32 AM
You don't have to it's just safer, so they don't fly away. My past budgies flew away, they weren't clipped.

I chose 'they will be in the future' because I am thinking of clipping Bobbys wings to help him with taming. Perhaps if he has to rely on me more maybe then we will bond better :D I will probably only do it once, I will have to see how it goes!

not only does it stop them from flying out the window or door, but it also stops them from being able to get high speeds when in flight so that they can't ram themselves into a mirror or window pane accidently :( its a very common way that they die when unclipped.

Really? I didn't know that.

yup :) they can still fly, somtimes across about 6-8 feet!, just not at dangerous speeds. My Kieco ran into a mirror once but because he is clipped he just tapped it instead of snapping his poor little neck!

Amy

Oooh it saved his life!

Bea

You can also use clipping to teach a budgie where windows and mirrors are without hurting it. Blinkie sometimes crashed when he was a baby with clipped wings but not hard, now as a flighted adult he knows where the windows and mirrors are in the house and has never crashed once.

thats awsome :) I'm glad to hear they're not as at risk as I thought *knock on wood*. So I guess your a pro-flight girl then? I'm so over protective I just can't take the risk haha. I have nightmares about trisket dying when I go somewhere over night. in the morning all I want to do is go home asap to make sure they're ok lol. plus I have fish tanks as well so I worry that if they could fly up, they might accidently fall in when I'm not around and drown! clipping keeps my sanity lol good god, imagine if I ever have real human children! ahh!

Bea

I'm really not bothered about wing clipping either way. Although i must say that i absolutely refuse to clip Blinkie's wings again as he has such a blast flying around, visiting everyone's shoulders and being cheeky. I think that it's good to clip once for taming purposes and then let the flights grow back. :)

It's not that i'd miss it (i would but that has nothing to do with it), it's that i can't imagine the stress it would cause him to suddenly not be able to fly, the thought nearly makes me cry. I would be taking away something he clearly loves and i could never do that to my baby.

Amy
