My little man is the sweetest little budgie. He was ready to play a few hours after I brought him home.He Is outgoing and not very scared of new things or new places. I take him to friends house with me and he plays and has fun and he is just a great little guy. He bit me yesterday for the first time. It almost made me cry:p I know it is not personal and I should not take it so hard but I'm just emotional I guess. It wasn't real hard but hard enough to hurt. Anyway, he has been really grippy for no reason. He loves me and wants me and then two seconds later he vocally complains at me while he kind nibbles at me. Not hard enough to hurt but what the????? What is wrong with my baby? Why is he in such a bad mood? Nothing has changed. I can't figure out what would be going on. Nothing is happening when he does this.

How long have you had your budgie, and how old is he?
Either he was afraid at first..and isn't any more.
Or it could be puberty:p

Don't take it personal....

No he was never afraid. He has been following me around since day one. He should be around four months now. I will have to fully calculate that. Thanks

He could be going through a moult.. Budgies tend to be more cranky when they're moulting.

He is loosing lots of little feathers but no real big ones. I wasn't sure if they were even whole feathers. Do they really get that cranky while moulting. This is just for no reason. Just out of the blue.

When they moult, most of the feathers you will see will be small down feathers. I rarely see any large feathers when my budgies go through a moult. But he will get better.:) No matter what his problem is, I'm sure he'll come back around.

Yes, they do get cranky. I don't think they feel well when they are molting. So that could be it...

OHHHHHH Okay. He must be moulting then. I just haven't seen any pin feathers or anything. Is this always noticeable when they are moulting? How long does it normally last. He is soooo grouchy!

Hi Corey~

I am also thinking that your budgie may be going through a molt. I rarely see my budgies lose large feathers during a molt, only small 'downy' ones. Do you see any new feathers poking through on your budgie's head? These could be pin feathers coming in. :)

If he's not molting, I'm sure it's just a little 'bloop' in his behavior. Budgies are like humans, and have good and bad days, good and bad weeks. My budgies' behavior fluctuates every day~ It could depend on their mood, the weather, or even my mood and how often I'm spending time with them that day.

I'm sure your little guy will be better soon! Be sure he's getting enough sleep and you might try offering some fruits and veggies for some healthy vitamins. :) If he starts biting hard, try dropping your hand (like a branch dropping in the wild), and say "No". Then go back to your training. :) Try not to have too big of a reaction~ This is what your budgie wants, and if he gets it, he'll continue biting.

Good luck! I hope he's happier soon. ;)

Pin feathers won't poke through for a couple of days, usually until your budgie has lost most of his feathers! A molt lasts about a week usually, but the time frame can change with each bird. :)

Ok! thank you very much for the info. I was thinking of getting a tiel and it had me wondering if I should wait a while to see how things play out with my Jove and if I needed to do something. I give him veggies everyday and a piece of fruit a couple of times a week though I don't enjoy getting pooped on on those days. LOL  He is on a pellet diet. Roudybish to be exact.

I hope he feels better soon. I can't deal with my man acting out this way!

moulting is so hard on them! Petey is moulting right now and he is picking on Merlin even more than normal. But then the next min, he wants to play. I don't get it. It is like pms for birds. He will be fine. I bet, when he is done, he will be more lovey than ever.
