Hi all, i'm trying to get my budgie finger tame. At first i tryed pushing my finger between his tummy and feet using the command 'come on', but that didnt work. I'm using millet at the moment, placing it in the palm of my hand. He has eaten out my hand about 4 times by moving my hand away from the perch, so that he has no choice but to place his other foot onto my hand. I've tryed doing it without the millet but no joy. Heres a few questions

1. Do you think he will ever jump onto my hand without the millet?
2. Is the command 'come on' a good command?..i've been using it for a week
3. Do you think i should take out everything out except for the seed, so that i have a better chance of getting him finger tame?

It is almost neccessart to teach them step up or in your case, come on. (you should also teach them step off too but that's something else!) It makes the whole proccess easier and if they are able to fly around the house once they get their flight feathers back, it will be more than helpful to just call them to your finger.

Finger training is hard and could take awhile. If you keep doing millet instead of the command, I don't think he will learn much. I only think that he will only go on your hand when there's millet.

And if you want to say the command with the millet, i think that would work so you should try that!

Hi, i think my bird might be tough to crack. I've only spent a week taming him and it's already killing me. I'll keep going, but without using the millet. I'll give it a month and if he still wont, i'm going to get a little budgie whip Muhahahaah

I've been trying to tame my Misty for about 5 months now, and I'm just now getting results. But soem people have their bird mostly tame within a week. It just depends on the personalities of the bird and the trainer. So don't give up in a month!

This worked with Edie, and after a week or so she jumped on my hand without me having to bribe her. Yours may take longer but you are going in he right direction hun so keep up the good work, it takes a lot for a new budgie to eat from your hand so it shows he is starting to trust you, keep on doing this but keep trying to see if he will step up too xxx

Patience is very important though some birds tame more quickly then others, Edie mine was tame after a week but she bites really hard and isn't approachable much these days, she will bite then fly to you and not bite etc xxx

Hi susie, my fingers are crossed for you as well. My budgie still seems abit nervous and doesnt move very much. He only stays on his top perch eating millet. I hope he starts getting active soon. It's only been 1week and 2 days though

Susie is your budgie active?

Kind Regards, Richard

Hi, I am also trying to train my budgie not to be afraid of my hand. I am trying something new and I think it may work. Time will tell. I put some millet between my first and second finger, so it sticks up on the back of my hand. I get my budgie to step up and put him on the back of my hand. He will eat it till it is almost all gone. Then I put him on my shoulder. Sometimes he will stay there even when I walk around. Other times he will fly away. Then I will wait for about 20 minutes and try again. It seems to work but He still runs when I try to get him to step up. He will step up when I get him cornered, then I feed him millet. Hope he gets the Idea soon. Just thought I would share that with all of you. I have learned so much here. Thanks for all of your Forums.

I did this with my birds and it worked, just keep repeating what you're doing. You are doing everything right. You have to be patience and make sure you don't miss any training session since they are very critical during the first days of getting trust. I took my budgies out everyday and talked to them just so they would realize that I'm not a threat. two years later they ask for food, jump on my finger for anything especially spray millet they go nuts for the stuff. try trianing him with millet then without it so he realizes it's the same thing just without the millet. If you keep on doing what you're doing everything will go the way you want it to.

I find I have an easier time getting some of my birds to jump onto the back of my hand. Maybe a a flat hand looks less threatening than the fist we make when just using a finger. It is also easier to slip a flat hand between the belly and feet than a finger sometimes.
