I purchased my budgie Willy from a pet store. The shop keeper said that all the budgies that just came in this morning were "Show Budgies" ? Now, I take it to mean that they "show" these budgies.....please tell me what that means? When I went to pick out my Willy.....WOW! what a bunch of beautiful birds and they were a lot bigger than most, and the colours were out of this world. Of coarse they were not your regular priced budgies at around $19.95, as these were closer to $30.00 with tax. What's the difference between them apart from their size, price and colours?
Does anyone know? :) xx :budgie:

Show budgies are budgies that you will find at a...budgie show! it's pretty much to showoff your budgie and/or winsome prizes. ***The rest was erased because I was wrong!! :) **
The budgie you bought is unlikely to be of show quality - which is why it was at a pet store. Show breeders sell the budgies with no showing potential to pet shops. This doesn't mean that they are not beautiful budgies it just means that they lack certain traits that would make them winners on the show bench or in stud. I see no reason for them to be priced up as they aren't any more special than our darling pet budgies but pet shops will do what it takes to make a profit. Show budgies come in the same colour varieties as pet budgies however certain colours are less likely to be up to show standard (e.g. recessive pied). Show budgies are often more placid and quiet than the energetic nutcase pet budgies. :P Show breeders strive to achieve perfection in their budgies and this is what's judged on the show bench - how close to perfect is the bird regarding the ideal size and build of the species and the markings of the mutation. A show breeder would never sell a show budgie with potential to a pet shop as they are worth a fair bit and may bring success to the breeder either on the show bench or in stud (to improve future generations). :) Top show budgies with excellent family lines have been known to sell for thousands of dollars - no joke!

I wouldn't like to have a show budgie then..I like trying to work my head off with the energetic ones! ;)

:) I can't thank you enough for your imput. Yes, Willy is less "nut case" as you put it, as my first budgie Coco was the biggest nut case of all. lol I know it will just take some time with him and he will be a wonderful companion for me. I'll never be sorry I bought him though, show budgie or not. It's been quite nice actually, having a more docile budgie this time, as my hubby and I went a little squirrley some times with Coco, especially when egg laying time was just around the corner:eek:
Thanks for help, it's greatly appreciated.:budgie:
Ill tell you about !!!SHOW BUDGIES!!!As everypne here knows I am obbsessed with them....rite everyone :P I absoluty luv them...though I only have one pure one and 2 halfs. They are great put it that way and funner I think you get to show them! You breed for sertain qaulities like big throat spots, size, head markings, patterns, colors feather qaulity its more like a challenge breeding them and than competing in a show is fun!You win ribbons and throhpies it really is lots of fun!they are hard to breed though and they come in many beautiful mutations!Good Luck

I bet a budgie show would be cool! I have a budgie book with a whole big section on how to train your budgie to be a show budgie.
My dog was bred to be a show dog, but we've never entered him into a dog show, but I know his grandfather won some prizes! :D So I've been to dog shows before. (Sorry, that's not about budgies at all)
Is a budgie show like a dog show?

Not really. There are just cages everywhere and people get to walk around and look at all the birds while the judgies do to.

A show budgie is an English budgie they are bigger. And the smaller budgies are american budgies. Thats what I read. :budgie:

Sounds like a way to make more money for the petstore...budgies are budgies. I agree with Bea.
