I know budgies are supposed to chirp and click and whistle, and doing so is a sign of contentment. I don't mind it, but it does get to be a bit excessive at times to the point where the whole family is annoyed. Is there anyway to nicely kind of calm them down when we need a little peace and quiet?

Birds have their "noisy" parts of the day, mine seem the loudest come mid morning to early afternoon every day, I have noticed on the more gloomy days, the time line varies

but if you want them to be quiet for a little bit you could always cover them for a little bit .

but other then that I don't know, none of mine get covered, but they're in a room of their own so they can do as they please

A distraction might work for a little break. Minsky had been chirping quietly for the last hour, so I decided to distract him. I managed to lure him into his bath. This only made him more excited. So after the bath he jumped on my chest, got me wet, and has gone back in his cage and is even louder than before.

Conclusion: deal with the chirping, or deal with it while wet.

Lol . . .
Generally I try to go over and talk to them nicely, explaining that they sound beautiful but could they please try to have some quiet time for a little while. I suppose I could bring them into a different room if they're getting too rowdy--they're in the family room right now. But when those full-chested ear-splitting cheeps start, the whole house gets a front-row seat to the budgie concert. Ughh.:eek:

Budgies generally keep up a constant sound, don't they? I have a budgie, that, during quarantine, he would sit in one spot and burble 24/7. Now this was some hardcore burbling which didn't even cease at night. Now that he's in with the rest he doesn't burble 24/7 exactly...

You could try moving them out of the family room, or give them some foraging activies for distraction.

Tip: Some background music helps to quiet them down. When I'm gone, I leave my alarm clock radio on in the background and it quiets my two down, but it seems that when I decide to play some of electronica music (dance, trance, techno, etc.) the start chirping to the beat or start following the choruses as well.

Some birds are chattier than others. Scribbles for instance chatters at regular intervals, mostly during the late afternoon, and he's nearly silent anywhere to an hour to two before bedtime.
Covering up his cage doesn't even work for quieting him down. About the only thing that will get him to quiet down will either be to turn off his dear friend the TV or bring a stranger into the room. XD;

I haven't tried the music yet . . . I have some calming instrumental stuff on my iPod, I'll try plugging that in next time they strike up the band. Good ideas everyone! :)

When I put millet in the cage that seems to keep them busy until they've ate it all. I don't give millet every day, I wait every few days that way it's a treat when I do bring it out.
