Hi mick. I am sorry to hear about the loss of one of your budgies and that another is ill. I guess you are not sure of how your first budgie died? That would be a real clue as to what is wrong with your other budgie.
I realize that you may think that vets overcharge, but you must realize that avian medicine is a highly specialized field, and not a very popular field at that in comparison to small animal vets (i.e. cats and dogs). One of the things you end up paying for with an avian vet is their expertise and specialization in treating birds. They can perform tests on your budgie that other vets would not be able to correctly interpret. Fecal gram stains and complete blood counts can provide very important clues about what is wrong with your sweetie. I would certainly encourage you to bring your little one to the vet, otherwise the likelihood of your remaining birds getting ill would appear to be quite high.
What are your budgie's symptoms? Any wheezing or whistling when breathing? What do the droppings look like? How about appetite changes? Energy level?
Many illnesses are treatable, but they do require a diagnosis and an appropriate treatement. I wouldn't recommend trying to treat your budgie yourself as any medication you give your little fellow may do more harm than good. I would just hate to see your budgie die when the illness could have been treated.
In the meantime, keep your sweetie warm and in a quiet place. Please let us know how your budgie is doing.
thankyou for your replies. tonight i av lost another budgie, thats two in two weeks. their droppings were runny and the one that dies today had fluid running from its beak after it had died. and its not that i dont like paying vet bills, its just my local vet told me that once a bird started t show signs of illness 9 times out of 10 they die anyway. my main worry is the other three remaining. they all seem healthy at the moment, but then they all did three weeks ago. what ever it is it has an incubation time of about 10 days. i know this is far fetched but could it be bird flu? ive av crap luck at the moment
Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that.

i am aving great difficulty with this site. new user. tonight i av lost another bird. what ever it is its seems to incubate for around 10 days, my last budgie died two weeks nearly. the rest of birds seem healthy, but then so did the other two three weeks ago.
My guess is that it's obviously spread to the other budgies. Unless you don't mind them dying (which I can't imagine that), you probably should get them to a vet to see if there's anything that can be done to stop the others from dying.

For the rest of the healthy budgies put them in a separate cage to the sick ones. Like Dave said I'm sure it has spread through the budgies.
