Hi all, my budgie is sleeping on the side of his cage tonight. He always sleeps in the same place. Nothing has changed in his cage. Is this normal? Thanks

Most budgies switch their sleeping places around, so it is very normal. Sometimes my Little Joe will sleep above his water bowl, just hanging on to the side of his cage. :)

Do you cover your cage at night? You may want to, as it helps the budgie feel a stronger sense of security. Also, once he is in bed, your budgie may start to move around and go back to his favorite place.

I wouldn't worry too much! :) If he's acting normal throughout the day (eating, drinking, preening, chirping, and pooping normally), he's probably just looking for a new sleeping position. ;)

Yes I keep him covered. Cool! Good to know he is okay. Being new to birds you could see where seeing him sleep like that was a bit worrisome. Good to know your bird does this too and that it is normal. I was covering up his cage while he was on it like that and he got a bit grouchy about it which is different for him. He is usually my little sweetie and after his nippy behavior today while on my shoulder and all I was wondering what his problem was. He was biting at the sheet and then made loud protest noises when I went to cover the cage LOL Weird. Can budgies just have a grouchy day? LMAO

Thanks

Budgies can have grouchy moments, although I've never seen one go a whole day in a bad mood-lol.He may not like the sheet. You could try putting a nightlight on for him, many members here have to use one for their fids.Try that tomorrow night and see if you and he have an easier time-good luck!

My old budgie, Charlie, was such a grumpy old man at night! Around dusk, he would stop letting me have him step-up, and he usually wanted to be left alone. :p However, after a good night's sleep, he was like an angel the next morning!

I think budgies can be grouchy, and definitely have mood swings! :) Like Louara suggested, you could try putting on a nightlight near his cage so when you cover it, the darkness isn't too bad. :)

Thanks guys. He wasn't really grouchy all day. LOL But he did get to be a grouch yesterday at one point. I think it is like a human baby when they get tired :) He usually doesn't care about me putting the sheet over him. and it is just a beige sheet and I dont cover the bottom corners of the cage. He lives in close vicinity of the hall way light which is on all night for my two kids. So he is never in total darkness. Thanks you guys. It's good to know my little man is okay.

My girl likes to attach herself to the cage's side (with her feet and beak) to nap.

Mine has started sleeping in what has the be the most uncomfortable spot in the cage. There is a toy that acts a bit like a perch up high in a corner -- I don't think he can even stand up all the way -- that he has be sleeping on. I have no idea whay.
