Hey everyone, im so excited. So i have 2 out of 6 budgies that are really acting like they are wanting to start a family. I take them out to my dads every now and then because we have a huge cage and 4 other budgies there. so while we were there over the weekend, Faith the male was showing aggressive signs when someone would get by a little hut we had. he would kinda chirp and bob his head to get Hope to come over, he was constantly guarding that thing. he even knocked Cyrena out of it and she fell with a thud (she is fine though). And so i knew i had to take them back home. on the way home we stopped and i bought a nest box. we just put it in and i was wondering if there was anything i needed to do to get Faith to go to the nest to check it out. Is there anything special that i need to put inside of it? I heard that they will make it themselves with feathers and stuff from toys in the cage. So hopefully i can update you all on good news. This is my first time doing this so i have no clue. here are some older pictures of them.

These are the newest.
Hope is yellow and is the mommy. Faith is white and is the daddy

Congratulations, I hope you get a happy healthy little clutch fom those two! They'll be gorgeous.
Anything you nee to do to get Faith in the nestbox..nothing, if they are wanting to breed, after a week or so Faith will start to check it out and Hope will as well, checking to see if it is a good place to nest..I put sawdust in my nestboxes, other people put wood shavings, (not pine, I think) and carefresh bedding stuff. All depends on what you want to do. I wouldn't just leave it empty though, then the eggs will roll around (even if they do put some feathers in there).
Anyway, good luck!

ok. Well nothing is in it right now. i wasnt sure. i didnt want to put in anything that would harm them. Can i just find shavings at the pet store? would it be in like the hamster section or what? does it matter where its at? how will they see the box? its just attached to the side, here is a picture. you can see them chillin' on the perch above it.

Awww you're gonna have your hands full with cuteness once they lay some eggs :)
Soft wood shavings are usually sold at pet stores. There are also some soft wood chewers that you can buy at pet stores which the hen would then use if she wants to make a bedding in the nestbox. Most hens usually kick out the bedding and like to make their own. In the past, all my breeding hens used to shred newspaper and put it in the nestbox as bedding. Make sure it's in the bird section though.
Budgies are very curious birds and anything new will attract their attention. They probably see the nestbox but are still a little apprehensive about going inside. You will notice that they will start to sit closer and closer to it and will eventually go in. once one goes in, the other will follow :)
Good luck and keep us posted :D
