View Full Version : Name that Parrot!

Babybreau's post about the unknown parrot being rehomed inspired me to make this game. :D

I thought it would be fun (and educational ;)) to have a Parrot Species guessing game.

I will post photos of 5 different parrots, and the first person to get them all right will win some karma from me.

Once the correct answers are given or 3 days have passed (whichever comes first), I will post another 5 parrots for identification.

No cheating though! ;) I will be saving the photos I pull from the internet onto my computer so that the URL can't be followed.

I won't be able to know if you look up a list of parrot species on Google... but I would think that is a little more on the unfair side.

On the other hand if you look at Number 1 and think it might be a [Enter Parrot Species Here], then it is perfectly fine to quickly look it up on Google to double check. Afterall, you did most of the work then anyway. :)

------------------------------

Tip

Please be specific about the species of parrot being named.

http://www.sydneywildlife.org.au/birds/cockatoo1.jpg

Do not just post that the above parrot is a Cockatoo. Please specify that it is a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo.

Ready? ;) Here is your...

:S Sorry if I messed it up Aaralyn! My "Parrots of the World" book states:

"The Vulturine Parrot (Pyrilia vulturina), not to be confused with Pesquet's Parrot (Psittrichas fulgidus), is a Neotropical parrot, which is endemic to humid forest and adjacent habitats in the eastern Amazon of Brazil"

My book was published a few years ago, so the information might be a little dated. Can anyone please confirm or correct the above?

All I can really find is if you google image them the Pesquet parrot and Vulturine Parrots, the Vulturine does have this other bird that is very similar to the Pesquet but it does have different colored feathers.
So by my small bit of research not knowledge I'd say the picture you posted was a Pesquet parrot.

softie
02-08-2009, 09:01 AM
Lol no biggie :) I just always knew that bird as the Vulturine :) I also looked it up after the results in parrots.org and they do list Pesquet's Parrot but not Vulturine Parrot. But if you look under Pesquest's Parrot, they state that another name for the species is the Vulturine.

I just looked it up some more and it turns out that I had the two species confused, sorry! Must learn something new everyday :)

Kate C
02-08-2009, 04:02 PM
The Vulturine Parrot Pionopsitta vulturina is also a mainly green bird. Pesquets Parrot is found in New Guinea and not South America like the Vulturine. Both are bare headed like the Vulture hence sometimes the confusion in names.

Some of the common names can be very confusing with parrots. Even our humble Cockatiel has various names within Australia. In the Eastern states they are often known as a Quarrion where in the Western states they are called Werro. Our Little Corella is known overseas by various names mainly Bare Eyed Cockatoo, Galah also called Roseate Cockatoo or Rose Breasted Cockatoo.

Also, Vulturine parrots aren't in captivity (last I heard). They would die and the last few were set free in their natural habitat.

Thank you for clearing that up guys. :) I see what you mean with confusing the two Aaralyn! I just read in my "Parrots of the World" book that:

"Pesquet's Parrot, sometimes referred to as the Vulturine Parrot, is a very.... etc." So confusing!

Anyway, I’m having a bit of a problem with deciding the winner this time. Kate C answered the fastest, but Aaralyn is slightly more correct because she named Number 1 as a Congo African Grey.

Therefore I will have to say:

Well done Aaralyn, you were the first one to get them all correct! :D

The answers were:

1 – Congo African Grey
2 – Black Masked Shining Parrot / Masked Shining Parrot
3 – Kea (I watched a documentary on them. You sure are right about them being juvenile delinquents Kate C! :D)
4 – Moluccan Cockatoo / Salmon Crested Cockatoo
5 – Queen of Bavaria Conure / Golden Conure

Looks like I'm taking over :) Thank you Kelsey!

RULES

I will list 7 parrots each time. Some of them will be super easy, some will be a little bit more difficult.
After the 7 parrots, there will be an 8th picture. BUT, the picture will only be a part of a body. You will have to guess what the bird is by only looking at that one part.
The prize will be karma points. Since there is an 8 karma point prize, the winner of one round will not be able to win two consecutive rounds. But do keep participating!
Even if one person gets all the names right, don't be discouraged. I may surprise you with a bonus prize. :)
You can use search engines for the species name but the birds will become much more challenging than this first round.

Okay.. Here are the birds:

Are we allowed to google to find the species name? Like I know alot of the species just not that particular bird or I need to double check to make sure I have it right.

Hmm... I guess I will add in that you can search online :)

But with that, the birds will definitely get more challenging.

Here goes.

Brown Headed Parrot
Zebra Finch
Dusky Headed Conure
Major Mitchell Cockatoo
Red Fronted Macaw
White Bellied Parrot Caique
St Vincent Amazon (Green Morph)

The last one is a Pigeon. Looks to be either a Racing or Homing Pigeon.

Very close, but not quite. Keep trying!

Amendment. The White Bellied Caique is the Green Thighed Sub Species. Pionites Leucogaster or P l leucogaster, the 2 other sub species are P l xanthurus and P l xanthomeria, both of these sub species have yellow thighs but all are White Bellied Caiques.

Thanks for clearing that up. I still would not have accepted White Bellied Caique either way. For example, if I placed a photo of a Cinnamon Green Cheek Conure, I'm going to expect Cinnamon to be added. Someone who says simply, "Green cheek conure" will not be correct.

Since the 8th picture is hard to specify, I will except dove. It was a morning dove.

Good job Kate. I never would of gotten them all. Especially the whole green thighed thing.

So many countries have their own species of Morning or Mourning Dove. The Australian ones are entirely different to the American ones which are closely related to the Carrier Pigeon.

RULES

I will list 7 parrots each time. Some of them will be super easy, some will be a little bit more difficult.
After the 7 parrots, there will be an 8th picture. The 8th picture will a little different than the rest. It'll be a suprise!
