Oh I get what you mean now (notice I had to edit :o )

Wow that's a toughy! There's wood cleaners out there, but would that be ok for the budgies? Like I said before, water really does nothing for wood. I guess we've got to wait to see if anyone knows this one!

Hmmmm...I can't think of anything that could be used to treat the cage. I was trying to find some information on linseed oil and whether that would be safe, but I wasn't able to find anything. Anyone have any ideas??

Hello Thuggerz,

Welcome to the Talk Budgies Forum. It's great to have you here and I hope that you will find this site very useful and enjoyable.

In regards to your question, I will ask my husband (later on tonight) and see if he has any suggestions in regards to treating and sealing the wood on your cage. He is a remodeling contractor and might have some ideas, but then again, I am feeling that there is probably nothing on the market that you can buy that is chemical-free.

When you talk of treating and sealing the wood, are you referring to the cage itself being made of wood? (Or, are you referring to the perches?) If you are referring to the perches, there is really no need to treat and seal them.

Well, I guess I won't have to get back to you. I was just now able to talk to my husband and he said that you can use just regular vegetable oil that you use for cooking. He said sunflower oil would be good. You can just rub it on with a rag and then once you've rubbed it on good, then wipe off the excess and let it dry. My husband said it may take a couple of days for the oil to completely dry and so you should put your bird(s) in another cage until the oil is totally dry. You shouldn't have to treat the wood any more than the one time. My husband says that the oil will probably give the wood a slightly stained appearance and that it will seal and protect it.

I hope this has helped you. Let me know how it goes.

Have a great day! :)

Donna

Hi Donna, thanks for going out of your way and answering my question. I'm still abit unsure weather to use sunflower oil or just leave the cage natural. Do you think the wood could become infected if i dont treat it?

Kind Regards, Thuggerz

Hi again, I've been told that i should use a disinfectant spray once a week when cleaning my cage. Do you think the disinfectant spray could cause the wood to rot?

Whatever you use the cage will get chewed!! So you'll have to watch carefully to make sure it doesn't get TOO chewed, lol! See what i mean....

You can't stop a budgie chewing - it's natural behaviour, lol! :P Not all chew badly but if you've got females they're the worst for chewing!
