View Full Version : Is this big enough?

Okay, so I'm not waiting for my hubby to get used to and/or like the keets. I'm going to get one for me. My kids are yelling at me that it's their birds, not mine & that I should go away. lol. I keep telling them that technically, it is my bird, seeing as though I'm the one who paid for them but they don't see it that way!

Anyway, this is the cage I have the two in. Is it big enough for a third & have them still be happy? We just bought the cage, so I don't really don't want to have to get a new one yet, but if I have to...;)

I wouldn't put a third bird. They'd be kind of crammed in there. Maybe is it's temperary but not long term. I think you'd rather keep argueing with your kids than put stress on them ;)

I would think birdiebabi is right.

I love your budgies! Lutino and Albino is gorgeous!

I love your cage, for two I think it is perfect but maybe small for a third. You can still get another budgie but if the other one is going to be yours then you can have a seperate cage, he/she wont be lonley because you can let them play together and you can have the cage near the other after quarantine period.x:)

I'd opt for another cage as well.

Stacy,

You know that that place on Southern/Dobson has used cages? And in most cases you can get a better deal on those than the price that they have marked for the used ones... He haggled until he got the price he wanted... My friend that got the lovebirds got an additional cage that was marked $15 for $6.00. They have awesome setups! You should check them out.

yeah. I got one for $10. I didnt try to haggle though :(.
But was the owners little girl in there when you went? She's really young, like 6 or something.. anyways, she helped me with my cage and when i paid for it she picked it up, without asking, and took it to my car. I was like "aww, youre such a good help" and told her mom that she was a great little helper. When she got to my car she turned to me after i put the cage in said "i take cash" in this prissy sort of manner. I was so shocked lol! I did end up giving her a dollar, and she told me that she had already made $20 today.
Her mom deffinately teaches them young! lol

lol, thats way to funny!

how much time to the birds get out of the cage? if they are in there just for the night, you should be fine. If they are in there all the time, then dont add another bird.

Stacy, that was a funny story about the six year old! :D

I agree that the cage would be small for three birds that spent all of their time or a majority of their time in the cage. As buuzbee said if they only spend the night in the cage it should be ok.

Let us know what you decide! You will have to get another cage anyway for quarantine if you don't have one already.

bs007
11-06-2006, 02:10 PM
Well, they will be in there most of the time, for now, until we get them hand trained. Then I plan to have them out for at least 4-5 hours per day. The cage is 24x16x16. I don't want them to be sad, so maybe I'll just suck it up & get another cage. Also, I'm getting the new baby from the same breeder I got these 2 - do I still need to quarantine if I just got these two 3 days ago from him?

BTW, thanks everyone for all of your help!

redgirl
11-06-2006, 02:20 PM
No I dont see the point, if this baby is from the same breeder, I think its just older budgies that you have to protect from a new budgie. I am not 100% sure though so dont take my word for it. Your cage may be fine because my cage always looks small on photographs and its really quite big xx

BUUZBEE
11-06-2006, 02:21 PM
i would say no, only if they came from the same clutch & housing area.
and getting another cage would be best in your situation

11-06-2006, 02:24 PM
Regarding quarantine, I don't think you would need too because they are from the same breeder. I didn't know that when I responded originally. :o

bs007
11-06-2006, 02:30 PM
Yeah, I think I'm going to go with the bigger cage. Mine is 24Wx16Tx16D. Even if they're out of the cage a few hours a day, I don't want them to be sad when they're in the cage.

BUUZBEE
11-06-2006, 02:34 PM
would you get a big one for all 3, or another cage for your bird?

it really depends how they bond. if you have 2 that really do decide to pair up, then the 3rd can feel left out. your getting them really close together, so hopefully they will be fine

I have two identical cages side by side and the birds all pretty much ignore the second one. They choose to sleep in the same cage and use the same cage during the day. The cage is 23 1/2 by 11. It was the biggest cage I could find in my area. Most people would think it is small but I have seen Squeeky fly in place in it. Didn't know that budgies could hover. :) In any case, my birds are out pretty much all day. I only confine them if I have to leave the house or there is a lot of going in and out of the house with groceries and such.

That's great you're getting a new cage - the one you have now is too small for two, it's the small variety of mine which i have 2 in (could fit a third). :)

they are good, since they colapse down too. they seem to have good prices on their other cages too.

(im impatient though, i just spent $60 on kates new cage for her bedroom (needed one with a sloping top so the cage cant get on it!)

Yea, I have them same problem. I don't think I can wait until it ships. Besides, I think I can trade out the one I just bought for a larger one at the store I got it at, so I'll only have to shell out about $10 more dollars. Woo-hoo!

So I went to go get my new keet today. I had him all picked out & everything. Then the breeder told me that if I already have 2 I should wait about a month or two to let them bond with us. He said the more we put in there, the less they'll want to hang out with us & they'll just want to be with each other.

But I was ready to spend money. I was planning to spend money. I needed to get something new. So now, instead of getting a new parakeet, I got a new cage. It's not much bigger than the one I had, but now there are a couple of little high places now to go up into. The rectangular part is the same size as my last cage only a little less deep. The higher up parts are the extra bonus rooms! LOL.

Here's their new home. (BTW, I'm keeping the last cage...just in case I decided to get 2 more!) :D

yea i would get another cage that is bigger regardless whether your gettinga third bird or not. That cage looks more likea breeding cage to me. I would say that cage is only good for one,or maybe two budgies. Try and get the biggest cage you can afford but make sure the bar spacing is 1/2 sometimes if you get a big parrot cage the bar spacings are bigger.

Ive been looking everywhere for a cage big enough for aprox 4-5 budgies and I finally found a good midwest cage that i like and its the right size.

good luck with your budgies and you if you do get a another cage(which i highly recomend) you should still keep the old cage for quarantine or if you plan on breeding in the future that would be a good breeding cage.

ohh woops didnt see your new post the new cage looks good. Hope the birds like it in there new home.

I'd get a cage with a higher top... But that's just me since I like to hang lots of toys and millet from the top of my budgie's cage.

MY budgie would get bored in a cage like that, but I'm sure if your budgies enjoy it they wouldn't mind waiting a while- that is if you're planning on a new cage.

But, in the words of birdiebabi, I wouldn't buy a third bird, they would be crammed in there. Mabye take a look at some cages at a petstore near by, just to gaze at the sizes if you have time.

good luck
-Malina

Edit:

Ack, I didn't see the rest of the pages. Beautiful cage! If those are swings at the two sides, I have the same ones as you. Skye loves them, he naps and sleeps on one and plays on the other, aw well on the perches. Don't you just love it when budgies play in their new cages? It feels awsome to know that they love their new homes!

Well anyway, again, lovely cage!

I have the same cage as well!!!! WOW Only mine is more of a baby blue than a teal.

I really like it. The only thing that bothers me is how hard it is to get the longer perches out for the weekly cleaning. but I have gotten use to it and have perfected it. lol

Another tricky part is getting the bottum grill out for cleaning but I just take one of the peak roof off and that seems to work great.

I hope you love the cage. and if you dont, I would gladly buy it off of you. I would love to have a second cage.

I have a transport cage but I need another cage for incase I am at the petstore and see a lutino or albino things....

Thats my deal I want to have the two I have plus a lutino and albino. and they all must be boys.

I did see the blue one at the store, but my son wanted the green one, so green it is! I do like the cage & hope the little gals like it too. As of now, they seem to be hanging out on one side at the top & haven't really ventured out to the rest of the cage. Hopefully they will soon.

I didn't even think about how tricky it would be to clean it, I just thought it was cute. Then I got it home & said Aw, Man! But I think it's cute enough that I can suffer through it. ;)

Our Lutino & Albino are both girls, I think. We were told the Lutino is a boy, but I think the breeder was wrong. I want to get a blue or speckled one for myself. Or both. :p

About the door openers, my son pointed out to me that some of these doors lift up and away so the door drops forward and becomes a platform.
