- Billy and Lily have a bigger cage.
- I now have a proper nestbox.
- I've done TONS of research, so try me with some questions, I already answered these from Bea's pet forum that someone asked me...

1) Your 3 week old babies still haven't grown any feathers -especially on thier back! whats gone wrong and how can you help them? (HINT: This happend to me this breeding season!) Either the parets have been plucking them, or they just haven't developed. You can help them by rubbing valsline (sp?) on the bald parts.

2) Ok... lets pretend that your now a 'breeder' and i'm a newbie. how do i hand-feed a baby budgie?
Hand feeding a baby budgie (Awww! ) includes feeding the budgie either proper baby budgie mush, or some small seeded millet, de-husked and mixed with hot water until soft, wait until cooler and then you get a syringe and put a little bit in at a time, even during the night - Every 1- 1/2 hours. Oh, and baby food. :)

3) Lilly seems really strained and exahusted and has been sitting in the nest box for a while. whats gone wrong and how can you help her? She is eggbound. You must put her in a dark box, on her own, and pour vegetable oil around her vent. DO NOT POKE THE EGG OR YOU WILL CRACK IT AND HURT THE HEN VERY BADLY!!

4) what should a good diet look like for a breeding pair of budgies?
Vegetables, fruit, seed, pellets, mineral blocks, cuttlebones, eggfood ie, a good mixture.

5) what does the term 'in breeding condition' mean? how do you get a pair into condition? how can you tell that they are in condition?
You cannot make a budgie come into breeding condition, they do it on their own. It means when the budgies are ready to breed. You can tell when a female is when her cere is a dark crusty brown. When a male is, his cere will be a bright blue.

6) how do you know when the baby budgies are ready to leave the nest?
The babies are ready to leave the nest wehn they are getting too big for the nest, and there feathers are mainly grown.

See?! :D

So, when I put their nestbox, I'll keep you updated, unless you have a really good reason why I shouldn't. I am nearly 12 after all. :) I have enough room, ideas of owners that could buy some, and I'll get even more as most pet shops have stopped selling them. :)

I have a great idea as well. Keep a baby, train him, wait untill he's around a year old, and introduce him to Skye, by that time they'll both be old enough to breed, but mind you, that'll be in around a years time. So... then, I'll have 2 breeding pairs, and by that time, have an avairy keeping around 10 of B&L's babies in. Obviously the, when both pairs get too old to breed, I'll stop, maybe for ever. But of course, I'll stop before they get too old, so I don't wear them out. lol! And I'm not breeding any of the babies with eachother... OF COURSE! I'm not going to inbreed them. :P That's just silly. :D

So what do you think? :D

I'm ready. :fingerx: :)

Yes, they even have a bird heat lamp. :)

I'm feeding them on eggfood, seed and pellets, as well as the occasional millet, and also mineral blocks and cuttlefish. :D

No need to worry about the temperature, as I said earilier, they have a special bird heat lamp. :D

:( Because of Lily's poorly wing, I think it would be a bad idea for me to put her through so much stress when she might already be in pain. So come to the summer, come the eggs!

Amy,
I'm so intreged by you and you birds. I found your postings about lily while looking for info on breeding my birds. Did Lily ever lay an egg? I wish you luck with your birds and a happy b-day.

Unfortunately, Lily did not lay an egg, and I don't intend on her ever to. I think her wing may be damaged for life, unless the vets can fix it. It might be dislocated or broken. :( When I am slightly older, I intend on breeding.

Good luck with your birds, and I hope if you ever get eggs, all of them will have healthy chicks in! :D

eh, i'd hate to have to feed them every 1 1/2 hours... if needed.. that's worse then a REAL baby!

I wouldn't really worry about that unless you wanted to hand rase them. I parents can take care of them just fine.
