Thanks, the eggs hatch after 17-20 days correct?
And how likely is it they will hatch after 17 days
Zeena
01-07-2009, 05:24 PM
Yes eggs usually hatch between 17 and 20 days. From the few times i bred, all the eggs hatched excatly on the 18th day. I wouldn't worry about at how many days they hatch exactly. Sometimes they're just late. But if it passes the expected period, then chances are it's now fertile.
Good luck and can't wait to see the babies.

Mine were at 18 days too. That was from the time she actually actively sat. She was in with the eggs but was still prepping for a few days before she sat most of the time.

Congratulations!! So cute :) It is funny how fast they grow isn't it. That is what would amaze me the most when the next one hatched. Careful of them falling out when they get a little bigger as the lip on the nest is not too high. You can put them right back in but you don't want them to chill. Also watch for nail snags on the fabric. Can't wait to see who they become and how many more you get :)

Mine were every other just the way they were laid. So assuming Pia laid on them right away it will be the same as the way she laid them. If she waited until a few were laid then you could even get some the same day. They don't start to growing in the egg until she sits on them. Can't wait to see who's next :)

Hmm Im wondering when should they be putting there legs under there bodies to avoid splayed legs?
And does it have to be compeltely under?
enicol6
01-20-2009, 02:55 PM
I think they look good but I am not an expert so I will let someone else tell you for sure. Your nest is not slippery so it should not be a problem.
Mithu
01-20-2009, 03:00 PM
Hmm I am looking in the nest and it seems as tho the oldest bird is leaning against the side and one leg is kind of out standing ..
enicol6
01-20-2009, 03:04 PM
That is odd. Mine started to splay because Lila would throw out the bedding and it was slippery. They corrected themselves when Lila stopped fighting me on bedding. That is odd if it is just one. If memory serves, Buuzbee helped me and has a site and it shows what to do. You could post her a message to look at this thread and see what she thinks of him.

No; it's too soon to tell gender. I wrote "her" because I was too lazy to type "his/her." :p Sorry for the confusion.

Yes first she went in the cage but never bothered to even touch the box but 5 mins later I saw her in there.
It cleaned very well cant believe how much they poop, it was just everywhere!
Its nice and clean now
Also while taking them all out, found no signs of splayed legs on any of the chicks they seem to all be doing great

Actually, a person I know (on another budgie forum, actually...) can tell with about a 90% success rate as to what sex the babies are from 10-15 days old, even younger. I'm trying to learn how, but I'm not sure..just a guess here but I think you have either 2 girls or a boy and a girl..but again, I'm learning so don't blame me if I'm wrong. ;)

I've just changed her breeding nest and she hasnt shown any sign of care but im hoping for the best
Okay well it was no sucess after 2 hours of waiting she showed no signs so i put the snuggler back and in a instant she was in there feeding the chicks
I have a new idea for tomorrow to put the WHOLE snuggler in the nestbox and slowly after days remove it.

To familiarize your hen with the nestbox, can you set the hut on top of the nestbox, and put both inside the cage?

unfortunately, the only nestbox i could find is a bigger one then the above average size
and because of this, both on top of each other wont fit , the big one could but it would be very hard to check on the chicks so thats why i had to put it outside of the cage...

I have a daring proposition that involves disguising the nestbox to make it look like the hut. Cut the floor out of the hut and place it inside the nestbox; then place the chicks inside. Then place the rest of the hut over the nestbox like a Santa hat or a facade, matching the entry hole of the hut to the entry hole of the box. If the hen goes inside, let her and the chicks settle into the hybrid box/hut for a day or two. (Make sure the box has adequate air circulation.) Then remove the hut floor and top from the box.
I hope others will comment on this proposition before you try it.

It does seem a bit risky but the problem is I only have one snuggler.. and i've tried about everything but she has no interest in the real nestbox, i'll leave her to feed and raise them in there as it isnt that bad as people say it is.
thanks for your concern :) apperciate the help

Yup they're both Clearflight Pieds, but one (the younger of the two?) is Opaline. I just looked back to the beginning of yuor breeding journal..the mother is a blue Clearflight Pied and the father a Light Green Opaline. This means those two babies are both split for blue, (and that the father is not split) and because Opaline is a sex-linked mutation..An Opaline male to a Normal female has Opaline hens and split for Opaline males. So those two are a boy and girl, the green Opaline Clearflight Pied is a girl and the boy is a Green Clearflight Pied split for Opaline. :D

 knowing nothing about mutations, had never known you could tell the gender of it so soon
So the younger one is a girl or which :S im getting a bit confused
maybe you can tell me which is boy like the one with the green color on its wings
that would make it easier for me
Thanks!

01-30-2009, 11:42 PM
Okay then sorry.:)
The one with green on its wings is Opaline, like its dad. She's a girl. The other is a male, and split for Opaline. (meaning if he bred with a girl that doesn't have colour in her wings, he'd have boys like him, normal males, normal hens, and hens that are Opaline) To make it easier, just google Opaline budgies (or something like that) and it'll be explained a lot clearer than I can do it. :D
If you bred the parents again, you can easily tell what sex they are when they are at the stage these babies are, when they start feathering up. Any with colour in its wings is female, any without is male.:)

They're amazingly beautiful :)
Congratz on a successful journey! You were an excellent and responsible owner during all of this regardless of the fact that you didn't plan for this.
As for moving them, i would wait until the youngest becomes as independent as his siblings. Also Pia and Mithu may be getting ready to start a second so keep an eye on those two ;)
Pretty babies. I like the green babies the most. Are they light green opalines? If yes, please send one or two my way :) I looooooooooooooove light green opalines.

I think I'll seperate the mom
but the problem is she cant be in another room
The cage is beside the nestbox with Mitti and Krishna..

Yeah if she's starting another clutch and you don't want her to, I suggest you do seperate the mum from the nestbox..leave the dad with the babies and have the mum go to another cage. Another room would be good because otherwise they'll spend all their time calling to eachother and the dad might not feed the babies.
Anyway, it's great to see the clutch all grown up. :)

How long before I can remove the nestbox?
Until the youngest baby is 5 weeks old correct?
Jen144
02-15-2009, 11:37 PM
When the youngest is about 5 weeks, yes. If it isn't reliably eating seeds yet then put the father in with the babies so he can feed them, if the youngest doesn't follow its sibling's example and eat.

More pictures will be added this weekend
Just an update
There all doing great, spending ALOT of time outside of the nestbox
Im still looking for a cage but not much luck yet
One question though..
How should I let them about to fly? Im afraid they will crash into something and hurt themselves
Should I wait till they get a bit older then clip the wings and go from there?
all eating veggies now..
Poop seems to be brownish???
Any suggestions?

Let them fly about and crash. They all do. Your job is to take them to a place where there are no sharp things, holes, gaps, escape routes etc. Glass or seethrough things are bad.
But basically, they learn very quickly to manouver in air. Once they get the basics, they will be exploring EVERYWHERE!!!
Budgies wings should not be clipped before they learn to fly, or they will not have teh chance to develop proper muscle strength, co-ordination. Added bone strength and body structure results from proper wing/shoulder/chest muscle development. Flying also gives birds confidance and is natural to them.
p.s Poop is fine. They will be slowly developing the bacteria needed to digest different foods. Great time to introduce all those healthy veges and/or pellets that the old birds probably lift their noses up at!! Curiosit will get those younguns eating like champions so be sure to provide lots of variety of vege's you want them to eat. Another way they can develop the necessary bacteria is by eating the poop from other budgies. Sounds bad, but there are great pros and cons to it. Its a great way for a flock to adjust to food sources in a new area, but also a great way to spread disease from sick birds. Providing your birds arent sick and the poop hasnt been sitting growing bacteria for long its natural for your birds to eat it.

Yeah i would try and remove the hen asap if you dont want a second round. Another room would be the best option, but if thats absolutely not possible, cover the cage she is in as much as possible for a few days. Moniter her to see if she is eating ok and check for any further eggs. Especially check to see if she has 'egg bum' (which you might be able to recognise by now) and if she is showing any signs of distress (fluffing up, sitting on the bottom of the cage, panting, tail bobbing).
Im sure that if you are as careful and attentive as you have been thus far, she will be fine.

Ok thanks alot guthwulf I'll let them fly about
As for the hen, shes already layed her first egg and I shook it and put it back in
Im about to remove her today
Will they completely stop going in the nestbox? Im asking this because like I said Im going to buy a really big cage for all 8 of them, and need to know if I can remove them at a bit older or wait till they stop going in the nest

As soon as the youngest was out of the box, i put it in a nursery cage with the other chicks that had no nest box access. You may feel bad for the youngest chick, but let me assure that the older chicks will have no problem being in the cage with no nest box to run to, and the younger chicks copy the older chicks.
So feel free to remove the female once she has laid her second egg (which she likely will today). Remove the nest box and leave the chicks in the cage with dad without a nest box. Dad will feed them if necessary, but for the most part they will feed themselves now.

Bad news, I let one of them fly about and he crashed into a wall really hard seems to have injured his cere, It was bleeding a bit and seems as though right through the middle the skin actually came off..
I put some cornstarch on it
Seems to be doing fine now
I'll just wait to get there wings clipped when there older

omg, i hope your baby feels better and is not badly hurt! this usually happens. The thing with birds is that flying comes naturally to them, it is the stopping and landing that they have to learn by observing other birds.
Keep us posted :)

I would still recommend letting them fly. I cant stress enough how important it is that they learn to fly. Once they already know how to fly safely, if you wish to clip their wings, it is easy enough for them to learn how to adjust to their restricted flight. Learning to fly with clipped wings, or having clipped wings without proper flight skill or muscles is not advisable.
I know its scary to see them crash, but there is no other way to learn! If it helps, a smaller room that does not allow them to pick up so much speed is helpful. They will still crash, but a smaller room means they have to fly slower and turn more often, both things they need to do!
Its up to you, but i would still let them fly.

the room was fairly small but still she got hurt
seems to be doing okay now
will add some pictures tomorrow
Also, make sure that they are learning to fly in a room that has a carpet so their landings are not dangerous.

Wow! They turned out so pretty. My batch last summer had a few wall/broken cere problems as well. It is really a hard call. You want them to learn and you don't want them to crack their neck either. You take a chance but it is probably best to let them learn at least once before clipping the wings but you have to make that choice as their owner. You will experience this problem again during their first moult.
Just as yours have all grown up, we had a hatchie today :)

Congratz on your new hatch! Look forward to some pictures
Alright i'll let them learn
But if I take them to a smaller room wont that only enable them to fly in that ONLY room correctly? The main room where the cage is at is fairly big and they could easily get hurt
Also the youngest is a month and a week old, can I remove the nestbox?
Still Looking for a Cage

Lila kicked her babies to the curb and they were okay so I would assume you can remove the nest box. If they like sleeping in it at night you can leave it a bit longer. Wait on one more person to answer that one because I am not certain. If they learn to fly in one room they can still fly in another. They will just have to get their barings once you put them in the new room. Also, when you move them to the new room, if they are able to access another room, let them out at night and leave the lights out in the other rooms. I had to do that for awhile. Mine are in my dining room and they have access to the whole downstairs. They generally won't willingly fly into a dark room. It also helps when it is time to go back in the cage. Good luck :)
There is a pic of my new baby under Lila and Grinch. I recently started their breeding journal.

The problem is shes started her second clutch and I dont want to put more stress on her, so Im going to remove it tomorrow
Also she seems to be attacking one of the budgies? Its not too harsh but he does get taken to the ground..
Should I seperate them??
