My 4 year old female budgie is loosing a lot of feathers and it doesn't look like her normal molting. She is loosing a lot of feathers around her cere and her ears and all around that area. Also, her body feathers are ragged (they look like someone burnt them - some of them are slightly curled). She normally molts for a couple of weeks and then her feathers come back in very nicely but she has been loosing feathers for about a month now and the feather loosing around her face has really picked up in the last couple of days. Also, these last couple of days she is having a hard time flying. Any thoughts on what might be going on?
I think there are some diseases that cause poor feather growth. Personally i think you should take her to an avian vet and get some tests run. If it's worrying you something is probably not right. What's her diet like, perhaps she's deficient it a vitamin or something that could result in poorer feather growth.
If it's worrying you i would take her to an avian vet, they can run tests and find out if something's wrong. I know there are some diseases that cause poor feather growth so it would be best to get it checked out.

She has eaten the same foods for the last 4 years - regular bird seed, millet, lettuce, carrots, parsley, spinach, orange, apple and a few others. Plus I put bird vit. drops in her water (as directed). Her dropping are completely normal and she wants to be active and acts like she is happy but just can't fly and is patchy right now. We live in the middle of no where and we have one little pet store in our town - can you think of anything a little pet store might have that might assist for now? Thank you.

Hmmmm....this definitely doesn't sound normal. Feathers should appear soft and clean and plentiful. I agree with Bea that you need to bring your little sweety to an avian vet. There really isn't much you can do until you know what is causing the problem. Good luck and please keep us updated! ;)

Hello Nelly,
I wish I could help you with your Budgie's feather and flying problem but I have no idea what could be wrong and I wouldn't have a clue how to guide you. I sure hope that you can get some answers soon, since you have had your Budgie for 4 years now and he has become a good friend to you. Please let us know how things turn out.
On a lighter and cheerier note, I would like to say WELCOME to our Talk Budgies Forum. It is so good to have you here and I hope you will feel free to get involved and share your comments and questions with us.
How many Budgies do you have and how did you get interested in Budgies? I have 4 Budgies at present - but didn't buy my first 2 until June of this year. There's no doubt, you are way ahead of me when it come to being a Budgie owner. :)
Have a great day and please come back often.

I've had birds all my life. I had a male and female canary couple for 14 years - they were so tame especially for canaries - then I had a male budgie (adopted from my Aunt) who was 8 when I got him and he stayed with me another 8 years (he spoke really well - I was able to teach him at least 30 words and phrases) - lastly I have had my current budgie (her name is Boosey) for 4 years.
Boosey has been a different experience for me - I've never had a bird that laid eggs! In the 2nd and 3rd year she lay about 40 eggs in total! Luckly she hasn't laid any in the last year.
I've never had a bird with this problem - I've never had to take a bird to a vet - I've always been able to give it a lot of heat and if required pet store antibiotics - but then again maybe I've been lucky.
I have Boosey in a smaller room with lots of heat tonight - I'll see how she is in the morning and call a vet - the closest one is about 2 hours away by car.
Thank you for your responses.

whats their fav? so far I have tried kewi bannana and apple.. he may have taken nibbles of the apple.. not sure tho.
also.. would spray millet make my bird a bit hyper ? as soon as its sight he runs around the bottom of the cage looking for attention/escape from the cage.. kinda cute but annoying. I let him out and does nothing but run around untill he gets his treat.

My budgies have stopped eating fruit and veg, its offered daily but they havent touched it for over a week now .
I actually moved the location of the fresh food too, not sure if this as anything to do with it.
I was advised to keep moving food pots and fresh food around the aviary in various areas, to make the birds work for it , so to speak as tho they would in the wild. Is this good advice, because its seems as tho they had a routine and knew where to find the food .
Can they survive on just seed and millet? Is it ok for their health to have just seeds?

YAY! Even though I dont really like Zupreem all that much as a pelleted diet I bought them the Fruit Flavored Pellets because I know this is going to be more Appealing then any natural pellet just because the fruity smell. Well, the day I got my pellets which was today my budgies ate some. lol..
Well, actually my Male made pellet soup...His water dish is connected to his pellet dish and he splashed the water into his pellets, he then waited a little bit lol ate some and then went over to his mate and fed her some(regurgitated)..
Atleast they are getting some kind of extra Vitamins and Nutrients! Im very Excited that they are already taking to their pellets and hope to see that they dont make pellet soup all the time!!
I also added a new Boing to their cage, and a Huge Apple Branch!! They seem to enjoy the apple branch but, they are a little scared of the Boing...They have just pecked it a few times and watched it move around a little.
Anyways, I just wanted to share my news that My Budgies has taken quickly to their pellets which has made me very happy!! :D :D

my budgies are so picky with their veggies! i have tried all kinds of vegetables but the only ones they will eat are sprouts and finely chopped zuchini. i know they need lots more variety, but i feel so bad when i put veggies in their cage and they don't eat them: i feel like they are starving or something! so i usually give them that and then seed mix later in the day. they also have a mineral block and cuttlebone that they like chewing on a LOT, but this definately isn't the ideal diet.
are there any tricks to getting them to eat veggies they have never had before?
thanks guys!

Does anyone feed their birds eucalyptus? I am trying to simulate their native environment as much as I can. I just want to make sure their reaction will be positive before I search for the plant. It should be okay because everything I have read talks about budgie's natural enviornment including eucalyptus.
There are many kinds of eucalptus so I assume any variety from Australia would be okay? Input is greatly appreciated!:feedback:

My budgie is about three months old so she is still quite young. I'm hoping to toilet train her so that I can give her more time out of the cage and not have to worry about cleaning up after her as much. However, if that doesn't work out, would it be bad for the budgie to be on a feeding schedule? I've heard that all the food passes through their system in 3-4 hours. Would taking the food away for that long before letting her fly around be a bad idea?

When I got my new budgie he was on a Kaytee mix with pellet and seed. So I bought some at the store yesterday, so I can wean him off it,and onto Zupreem pellets fruit blend and LM Animal Farms Classic Blend.
In the kaytee mix, there are seeds, and small, medium, and large pellets. I wanted to see if he would eat the pellets, so I dug through the food, and found lots of each size, and seperated them into different piles. I cupped each size in my hand one at a time, and put them to his beak. He only ate the smallest size. He got a medium sized pellet in his mouth but he really couldnt chew it and it just fell to the ground.
With the Zupreem pellet brand, they have different pellet sizes. One is labeled "finches and canaries" and then they have another labeled "parakeets". The bag for finches and canaries have the smaller pellets, and the parakeets is a little larger. I read on here that there really is no difference in the two besides the size. I was wondering do you think I should get the pellets that are meant for finches and canaries? Or should I try the ones actually for parakeets.

Periwinkle refuses to eat fruit of veggies. I give her some seed that I buy at Walmart but I am worried that it isn't enough to keep her healthy.
Also, every once in a while I will give her some vitamin drops that I found that you mix with the food. Should I continue this or is it basically a waste of time?

Hullo everyone. My new budgie is six weeks old and I'm trying to train him, coming along slowly. For those of you who have seen my Rainbow Bridge thread, you'd know that my darling budgie Moses who was 3 was killed on 27 Dec by a dog. Because it was SO long ago that I trained Mo and he was my only love, I can't remember what I did. I have a couple of books and they're helping.
My question is about food: I know I can't give Joshua greens until he's three months old, but what fruit and vegies can I give him now? I don't want to give him diareoah but I want to keep his health & nutrition balanced. He has top quality seed, shell grit, a calcium block, millet spray and cuttlefish.

here is a link I just found online that an aviary breeder has made her own concoction of herbs to feed her birds to help them with their health. It has worked soo good and became a demand that she is now selling it.
You can get a free sample for $5 shipping, unfortunately she only sends to the United States. I oredered the free sample and we will see how it goes.
Check it out and let me know what you all think.

Dear budgie buds, I found dried anise in a catalog for a local pet store. Does any one know if this is O.K. for budgies and what nutritional value this stuff has? Can it be given to budgies on a regular basis or is it like candy to them? Also where can I find Eucalyptus,is it something I can buy ready to feed or do I have to grow it. I have a green thumb but no more room for plants. Thanks again for all of your help, and your friendship Hugs to all. Tina Marie:budgie: :budgie:

I've had him for a week and he seems to be pretty normal by now. He won't go near his toys or touch his millet. I put a small piece in his food dish and he ate some, but that's it. He won't eat the big one hanging on the cage. Is it possible he doesn't like it, or is he still just settling in?

Hi, haven't been here in a while..
Anyway, my budgie is an EXTREMELY picky eater. I think his diet is unhealthy but I don't know what to do. He refuses to eat anything but millet. His seed mix has a variety and some dried fruits, but he won't eat any of those. I throw out half his seeds because he's not touching them. For over a month I've been leaving fruits in his dish, but he just throws it to the bottom of his cage. I've tried tying it near the dish, so he wouldn't throw it away, but he just ignores it.
I was thinking of converting him to a pellet diet, but I have a nagging feeling that he will be just as difficult with that as he is with his fruits.
How did you manage to get your budgie to eat fruits?
P.S I have no idea what he was fed prior to being under my care. He was a lost, unclaimed budgie, but I assume he's probably from Petsmart.

Hi, Budgie friends, I've read the post about the additives in bird foods, I'm confused, Which is the best one to use for complete nutrition and the least chemicals. What do you guys use? I use Kaytee brand now but I want to change (exact rainbow and fiesta seeds) i also give Peekaboo mixed veggies and broccoli. :) He eats the peas and green beans 1st. He drops alot in the bottom of the cage too! I have a little sprout pot too, it clips on the cage. If I let it in the cage too long he destoys it all! Can I cook an egg in the microwave or must it be hard boiled? Thanks in advance for any and all advice and ideas! :) Tina Marie

I'm wondering if anyone here could share some of their favorite recipies for their birds here.
I'd like to start offering my birds more than just the seed and pellet diet that I've been giving.
I've been offering some fresh fruits and veggies, however, my birdies aren't too keen on them. I've offered hard boiled egg and do so regularly (once every few weeks or so). Should I offer it more often? I grind the shells in with the egg, is this right?
I'm suddenly starting to feel like I have no clue what I'm doing.

i've taken baby Christmas into a seperate room to keep her from her badgering mother & also in hopes of hand taming. she's been there only one day. did i remove her too early? i know she can't be loose around mom or the other female, Chewie. they go out of their way to torment & attack her.
today when i came in after work to do the feed/water change, she had literally pulverized the tiny feeder of oats and shovelled all of the regular seed out of her main dish. not one seed had been eaten.
she nibbled a little bit at a millet sprey, but other than that, oats & groats is all she seems to want to feed on.
i have read that they are very high in fat & can be harmful if given as more than a treat.
i really don't know what to do, as i know budgies will starve themselves to death if the feed they prefer is not available. it's a darned if you do, darned if you don't situation that i need help with ASAP. she is only 1 1/2 months old & hours without food is like days for people.
please, any advice...will she be ok if i keep feeding her oats along with seed that hopefully she'll start to feed on?
she never touched fresh veggies while she was with the flock but i'll give it a try tomorrow.
also, i've got seeds sprouting & will try that as well.

I'm having a bit of memory difficulty right now. I can not remember if this was the board where someone was looking to order mineral blocks in bulk.
I have a friend makes them as a side to his woodworking hobby. He is just getting his web site up and working, it is NO WHERE near finished. His work travel schedule has kept him on the road a lot in the last few weeks, but he did get the mineral blocks up on the Bird's link. He will be editing the site to say if multiple items are purchased he will give a discount in shipping, please e-mail him for more details.

In the near future he will be adding to The Bird's link:
Nest boxes: parakeets, English budgies/Lovebirds and Cockatiels.

Also be sure to feed all things in moderation, too much of anything isn’t good for your fid.
Here are several foods you should avoid:
Avocado
Rhubarb
Chocolate
Raw Onion
Salty and sugary foods (chips, pretzels, and so on)
Coffee, Tea, or any type of carbonated beverage
Alcohol
If you see any food you don’t think is safe, be sure to tell me so I can remove it.:)

I read a lot of information on grit. some say it's good, others say it's bad. most say it's not needed. So I thought perhaps we could do a bit of research on our experience since we have SUCH a wealth of budgie keepers on this message board. please read the options before voting ^_^

Now that my budgies are eating greens, I'm wondering if they'll start nibbling on my houseplants. Do you know if geranium, rosemary, violets or ferns could be toxic to budgies?
