Hi

I wasn't sure where to post this, so hope its alright to pop it here. In the UK we do not have wild parakeets, budgies & parrots. Ones that do unfortunately escape or are purposely released by uncaring carers no longer wanting them, do not survive as a rule, they are either attacked by our native birds or die from the cold. However...

We have a flock of wild Ringnecked Parakeets living in a public park across the road from me. I live on the SE Coast of England, in Kent , right on the coast. Some years ago, I noticed a couple of parakeets in the park, each year the number has increased as they have successfully reproduced. There is now an impressively sized flock, that are doing extremely well. Obviously they have adjusted to our climate and none of the native birds give them hassle. The only hassle Ive ever witnessed was a squirrel who had climbed a tree up to a nest and the birds where dive bombing him and chasing him away. Our most prevalent common bird here is the Seagull, which are humungous birds. But they do not challenge the parakeets.

I wondered if anyone else had an unusual flock living wild near them? :)

I have seen this unuasual pair of lovebirds that have been around me for years. I have noticed they make nests and have young, which fly away, but they're always here. I think someone ignorantly let them fly away and they survived.

Your story is spectacular! who would've known a bird speciec from australia could live in a England

Maybe it escaped from a zoo or botanical park. Occasionally bad storms will blow an Ocean bird all the way out here to the west end of lake Ontario. They do not usually survive because they are salt water birds. As the planet gets warmer we can expect to see more of this kind of thing.

Have you heard about the wild parrots of Telegraph hill in San Francisco, I think? Anyway, it is somewhere around there. They have done well for years.

I seen a documentry as well Bea,,,my opion I think its a good thing for birds to be realsed and adapt to another forigen habitat yes we are breeding them in captivity but there are not enough breeders. People discourageothers from breeding becuase its a big thing and babies and all this non sense. I meen some of its true but I have had enough of it. PEOPLE are destroying native habitats for (e.g they are destryoing natural habitats like teh rain forset. Many species of animals not just BIRDS are being killed they will be extinct pretty soon. Everything. There aren't enough deticated breeders and breeders around here its sad it is Im not saying let your birds go. I think its a good thing the only downfall is that it messess up the ecosystem becuase if that bird dosen't have its own species to reproduce with it will reproduce with native birds and we will have Hybrids. Not a good thing but its good to me.
