I was just thinking that it would be cute for my budgies to have a little Christmas tree of their own, but I don't know what I could use that wouldn't be dangerous?

Has anyone done this before and what did you use?

Could it also double as a toy?

Thanks :)

A budgie Christmas tree would be really cute :)

I've never done anything like it though :o

I don't know if those plastic ones are harmful if the budgies chew on it :S How about a Lego Christmas tree? :D

I've wondered whether live or artifical christmas trees are safe for them. I've wanted to give mine an artifical tree but I'm not sure if it could be dangerous :S

I plan on decorating mine's cage for Christmas with Christmas type toys. Of course I want a tree! I haven't done anything yet.

I have thought about using card stock paper and dying it with food coloring and then letting it dry. Then cut it out in the shape of a Christmas tree. Then I will punch holes and tie up colorful beads on it with a star bead on top.

Another thing I have thought about is seeing if my craft store has a wooden cut out of a tree and dying that with food coloring, having my hubby drill holes in it so I can hang the beads on it.

From what I see pine branches are safe, but is this a bare branch without needles?

I have another idea of using a branch (from a safe tree or just a dowel rod) and tie on it or even drill holes in it to weave through hemp string. I have this natural greenish tinted hemp string. I will put in on either so it just looks like a pine branch or so that when I hang it the string hangs so it forms the shape of a Christmas tree. I can add beads and such to the string too.

I am going to a bird fair Sunday so I hope to see some Christmas bird toys and either buy or get ideas for myself!

Just want to add if you don't have green string you can dye that too with food coloring!

I would use branches that are safe, and hang bird friendly toys from, also place some millet at the bottom of the tree of branches. You could hang the seed bells and all sorts of edible things for budgies. May use a stand and attach the branches on safely and have a creative blast with it!

Probably not. :P He's skittish of new things and the budgies could care less about new toys! lol I wonder why I keep on buying them!!

How is your Christmas tree for the budgies coming along? I have been hard at work making mine...I have done a few already!

I am not sure you would want to use a fake tree...I think they could choke on the fake needles, what does someone else think?

I found on this site that real pine needles are bad for them: http://www.budgies.org/info/plants.html

I let my birds have clean, sap free, dried pine branches and pine cones, but not the needles (they contain pitch). So you would need to strip the needles and bake the branches and/or pine cones to remove the sap (which sort of then doesn't look like a Christmas tree)...

Here are direction on how to dry pine cones (put them on a cookie sheet with foil, as the sap will be released and hard to get off the cookie sheet if not lined);)

Not sure if any of these would work for you but these are the ones we make for the rescue birds every year. http://www.iggysbirds.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=26
Our budgies just love the popsicle Christmas trees and the popsicle ornaments. We usually hang the "medium" sized one in the aviary/fli9ght cage for all the budgies and then the individual ones get the popsicle ones. We decorate them up after Thanksgiving and they are usually gone before Christmas LOL. The main wood piece on then "medium" one doesn't get chewed on too much by the little birds but the "decorations" hanging on it do! We also use the medium ones in the cockatiels up to african Greys cages and the large one in the CAG up to Macaw and cockatoo cages.

I designed a new one this year where each of the "branches" is a "candy" stick -- wood wrapped in paper-- and then hung with beads between and balsa ornaments decorating it. I think it will work great for the smaller to medium birds as well. I will try to get some pictures of it soon:D
