Hi guys :)

I know my dad just built me a new aviary, but I told him beforehand that I wanted to convert a shed we are currently using (but will soon be free for use).

It measures about 2.4m across and about 3.6m long. Thats roughly 8 feet across and 12 feet long. Just for curiosities sake its 2m high (about 6.5 feet).

What i had planned for this shed was to take it down and relocate it to a cooler more shaded area of the property (good for summer, doesnt get too cold here either). Then as we rebuilt it i had hoped to use half of it for either two or three flights, and the other half for 8 breeding cages and some shelves/workbenches.

My ideal would be to have a flight each for the males, females and juniors. Im just not sure if there is enough room to do it. Here are the theoretical measurements, tell me what you feel about it:

If i had three flights they would each measure:
0.8m across, 1.8 metres long, 2 metres high / 2.6 feet across, 5.9 feet long and 6.5 feet high.

Dividing the same space into two larger flights would mean they are:
1.2m across, 1.8 metres long, 2 metres high / 4 feet (3.9) across, 5.9 feet long and 6.5 feet high.

I would REALLY love three flights. And i think as long as its roomy enough for me to move around in, every book i've read says that it is better to have a longer flight than a wider one. So providing 0.8m is enough for me, and they have 1.8m / 5.9ft to fly across (perches at both ends) do you think that would be sufficient?

Obviously i would have to give serious thought to the maximum number of budgies each flight could hold COMFORTABLY without pushing it.

THoughts???

Just for my own knowledge and anyone interested, by using a guideline of about 4000 cubic inches per budgie, here is how many budgies I could hold per flight if I had:

=> 3 fights of 31.5 inches x 70.85 inches x 78.75 inches = 175,752.28 cubic inches (lets say 175,750cu).

175,750cu / 4000 cu per budgie = 43.9 budgies (Lets say 40 budgies MAX).

=> Two flights of 47.24 inches x 70.85 inches x 78.75 inches = 263,572.63 cubic inches (lets say 263,500 cu).

263,500 cu / 4000 cu per budgie = 65.875 budgies (Lets say 60 budgies MAX).

(Theoretically, that means a single flight 'could' hold 120 budgies :eek:)

i'm no good with measuring - I failed that part of shop class really really badly :P

but going by how you have it broken down into how many birds could fit in each one, I'd say Thats more then enough room

are you planning on adding more then the 13 you already have?

But don't forget to take into consideration, toys/swings etc take up space as well (even Aviary birds need toys and swings :-) )

But i'd say if your dad allows you to tear down the shed and re use it go for it :)

are you going to have the boys/girls/juniors side by side? how would you do the door? each one have thier own on the front Or you enter through say The back of the shed" and walk through it open another door (or screen door), to get to say the females, then to get to the males you'd go through another door and the same with the Juniors ??

ok I hope that made sense ! lol i'm getting a bit sleepy and rambling

if each "section" would have a door on the front, i think it would be wise to make it so there is a safe door as well that way when you open it up to get into each section you won't have any escapees

but from what i've read so far you plan sounds awesome
