I used one of the plastic clips that comes with the treat sticks, it pulls right out of the end and pushed it into a large piece of peeled carrot. Some of my birds kept themselves entertained for about 4 hours turning it into little pieces of carrot rubble. It is amazing how uniform the pieces are. Hopefully some of it at least was ingested. But the clip does a great job of anchoring the carrot.

Those clips are great. I use them for apple slices

Anyone have a picture of the clip you are referring to? I have given those treat sticks but they don't have clips, you just hang them on the cage?

does anyone know if the carrot (or any veg) has to be organic or is it ok just to wash and peel the veggies before putting them in the cage??

haha yellow loves carrots. I mix carrot shavings with hardboiled eggs, or give her a big piece that she'll throw around and chew till it's destroyed :)
The funny part is her face, beak, feet, and stomach all turn completely orange :)

They do not need to be organic, Home grown is best Because then you know absolutely no pesticides were used BUT when bought from the store(where i get mine all winter long) a good washing is all you need to do with the veggies

If you can't get Fresh veggies, Frozen is the next best thing (unthawed of course) and you can either put some on a dish and let it sit on the table to unthaw, or do it the night before by putting some in the fridge, or use the defrost button on the microwave

Do not give them canned veggies - there is way too much salt in canned veggies and fruit! Once in a blue moon is okay but not on a daily or even weekly basis, I've given mine canned only when i had no fresh, no frozen, and no way to a store and I've had mine for a year and I've prob. given them canned 2 or 3 times at the most in the year i've had them

Also spinach is a once in a while thing (like once every 3 months or so) because the spinach soaks up their calcium that the bird needs.

and Never ever give it to a bird that is breeding

Here is a picture. I took it just for you. :) It is from the vitakraft treat sticks. You pull it straight out from the end of the stick when the birds are done with the treat.

I'll have to try giving it to them this way. They'll eat it grated but they might have fun eating it this way too.:D

Thanks for the picture. I have not heard of these treats. Where do you get them?

I think most bird food stores sell some kind of treat sticks, this is one of the popular brands. I have not had any trouble finding them around here, at least.

I throw mine away cos it wasn't holding the items properly. so I use a clip that pinch the items now.

I have novelty neon plastic toothpicks that I put slices of carrot on (imagine the toothpick like an axel and the slices of carrot like a bunch of wheels) with a gap between each one, then just sit it on a table for Charlie to play with. He rolls it around, tries to put the slices off, if he wants it to stay sturdy so he can really chew at he'll hold the toothpick with one foot - he goes mad for it!

That's a great idea!!! I've been getting the already shredded carrots and they devour those in a heartbeat. Do you peel the carrot first? I just planted my winter budgie garden with spinach, beets and cabbage. I figured I could pick a little bit at a time for their dining pleasure:) I am definitly going to try the whole carrot. Thanks again! Rockyhorse

Yes, I definitely peel the carrot and remove any suspicious spots. any split sections. Nothing but the best for them. :)
